Up until now, however, the scholar community has paid little attention to online-born media, compared to the high interest devoted to the legacy media brands. Drawing upon the extant literature on this emerging topic, this editorial summarizes the empirical and theoretical contributions of the thematic issue entitled “Digital Native News Media: Trends and Challenges.” The author highlights that the studies selected for this thematic issue not only explore the innovative characteristics and opportunities of digital native media in thirty countries, but also provide a cautionary tale about their structural problems and limitations.     Horas bajas en Telemadrid: la incertidumbre que rodea a la televisión autonómica de la capital de España Karen ARRIAZAIBARRA [email protected] Departamento de Comunicación Audiovisual y Comunicación I Facultad de Ciencias de la Información Universidad Complutense de Madrid Resumen: En una Europa cuya diversidad lingüística y cultural había iniciado su andadura en las televisiones regionales desde hacía dos décadas (Humphreys, 1996), Telemadrid inició actividades el 2 de Mayo de 1989, Día de la Comunidad de Madrid. Su historia no ha estado exenta de vicisitudes, debido a lo cual reúne todos los elementos descritos en la clasificación de Hallin y Mancini como ‘Polarized Pluralist’. Originalmente tuvo una buena acogida, al grado que en 2003 alcanzó un share del 35,5%, pero once años más tarde luchaba por superar el 3,8%. En materia presupuestaria también ha sufrido los embistes de la crisis, al pasar de 200,6 millones de euros en 2013 a 80,3 en 2014, y en el volumen de plantilla ha pasó de emplear a 1.210 en 2012 a sólo 319 en 2014, debido a un ERE que significó el despido de 821 empleados en 2013 (70 aún en proceso de negociación). Sin embargo, de entre todo este escenario probablemente lo más destacable son las presiones políticas a las que se ha visto sometido el ente por el Partido Popular de Madrid desde 2003 y que se ha reflejado negativamente en sus índices de audiencia. A estos apoyos "desinteresados”, hay que añadir sus respectivas biografías que, además, en el caso que nos ocupa, desde marzo del 2020 han encontrado en el coronavirus un aliado excepcional en el que apoyarse. Para ello, no han dudado en apropiarse de los miles de fallecidos y del dolor que sus muertes han provocado. Tampoco han tenido problemas de conciencia a la hora de evitar asumir sus responsabilidades durante la pandemia.
