2016 Winemaker Series 2016 winemaker series 10 GREAT DAYS, 10 GREAT WINES, 10 GREAT STORIES. The Calgary Stampede is an extraordinary story - an event that has come to represent a defining part of this great city and its people. At its heart it pays homage to the pioneer days that Calgary was founded upon - the Wild West, frontier lands, stories of hard work, unyielding perseverance, entrepreneurial spirit and western hospitality. Paying tribute to this rich and proud history, while ensuring we embrace this heritage as we write the next chapters of our story, is what we celebrate during these ten incredible days. To embrace this spirit we have hand-selected ten amazing wines, each with its own story that celebrates similar values held dear to the Calgary Stampede. These wines and winemakers share a deep love for agriculture and farming along with our values of western heritage, uncompromised quality and environmentally and socially responsible practices. July 8 I Matt Lane VP Americas | Winemaker LA RESERVE D’ANGLUDET Margaux, France 110 A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this rich and elegant wine delivers a bouquet of black berried fruits enveloped with earthy notes. The fine, characteristic tannins are enlivened by a fresh, spicy finish. July 9 I James Sichel Owner & Winemaker, Maison Sichel TATE SPRING STREET CABERNET SAUVIGNON Napa Valley, California, USA 175 After being greeted with big blackberry and blueberry pie notes, subtler aromas of brown sugar, cola and cigar box become apparent. The palate is equally rich with nice, chalky tannins and well balanced acidity. July 10 I David Tate Owner & Winemaker, Tate Wines PORTFOLIO 2013 Okanagan, BC, Canada 119 A blend of five classic Bordeaux varietals - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot – creates a multi-layered and complex wine. Blackberry compote, dark chocolate and clove spice aromas jump out from the glass, as the palate is greeted to soft, plush tannins and a smooth, long finish. July 11 I David & Cynthia Enns Owners & Winemaker, Laughing Stock Vineyards BEAUTIFUL EARTH Pasa Robles, California, USA 115 A classic blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, this silky wine will tantalize the senses with hints of blackberry, smoke, dark chocolate and sweet tobacco. July 12 I McPrice Myers Owner & Winemaker, McPrice Myers 2016 winemaker series NOTHING SACRED Okanagan Valley, B.C. 155 A blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, the eye is first greeted to a deep violet colour that reveals a bouquet of berry, cassis, oak, vanilla, tobacco and coffee. Full bodied and velvety with a long finish, the silky tannins perfectly coat the mouth. July 13 I Evelyn & Chris Campbell Owner & Winemaker, Elaine Vickers Blasted Church Vineyards RUBINELLI VAJOL AMARONE Veneto, Italy 150 A brilliant red ruby colour, the bouquet reminds of ripe red fruit, spices, liquorice and pepper. The taste is velvety and warm, and the senses are caressed with a rich, well balanced and elegant wine. July 14 I Nicola Scienza Owner & Winemaker, Rubinelli ARTIST SERIES CABERNET SAUVIGNON Washington State, USA 150 Produced from the finest and most regarded vineyards in Washington State, this rich and elegant wine shows classic notes of pepper, herb and berries, along with aromas of ripe black cherry. The finish is complex, generous and long. July 15 I Thomas Woodley Owner, Woodward Canyon Winery OLD VINE GRENACHE McLaren Vale, South Australia 90 A highly complex, intense beauty, with cherry and plums giving way to hints of licorice, dried spring flowers, cocoa and cinnamon spice. The palate is driven and concentrated, with fine sandy mineral tannins. July 16 I Peter Fraser Winemaker, Yangarra Estate Vineyard CAVALIERE Tuscany, Italy 180 100% Sangiovese…enjoy the bright, ruby red colour and intense fruity aromas with notes of prune, cherry and violets balanced alongside hints of vanilla and cocoa. Full and flavourful with soft elegant tannins and finishing notes of liquorice, tobacco and fruit. Scott Smith, Eterrna Consulting Pat Bowen, Summerland Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Skaha Bench Sub-Geographic Indication Page 1 Skaha Bench Sub-Geographic Indication Skaha Bench Sub-Geographic Indication TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIO N AND GEOGRAPHIC EXT ENT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The proposed sub-Geographic Indication (sub-GI) is located along the east side of Skaha Lake spanning a total length of approximately 10 km in a north south direction and an area of just under 365 ha. As of 2016, the delineated area contained approximately 75 ha of vineyards, split evenly between the northern and southern portions of the sub-GI. The delineation also encompasses areas of rock outcrop, a large residential area (Heritage Hills estates) and significant areas of orchard lands. The proposed sub-GI is composed of a single landscape element – the Late Pleistocene aged glaciolacustrine terrace (bench). The origin of the glaciolacustrine terrace and the nature of its surface relate to the period at the end of the last ice age during deglaciation when the temporary Glacial Lake Penticton existed some 12,000 to 10,000 years ago on the floor of the Okanagan valley including the area currently along the east side of Skaha Lake. The unconsolidated materials that underlie the terrace are for the most part comprised of silt and fine sand and without significant stone content. The soils that form on these sediments are very favourable for wine grape production.
