STS-126 MISSION SUMMARY NOVEMBER 2008 ENDEAVOUR (STS-126) SpaceshuttleEndeavour'sSTS126flightwillfeatureimportantrepairworkandpreparethe InternationalSpaceStationtohousesixcrewmembersforlongdurationmissions.The15day flightwithitsfourplannedspacewalkswillprimarilyfocusonservicingthestation'stwoSolar AlphaRotaryJoints,whichallowitssolararraystotrackthesun.(ThestarboardSARJhashad limitedusesinceSeptember2007.)Endeavourwillcarryabout32,000pounds,whichwillin cludesuppliesandequipmentnecessarytodoublethecrewsizefromthreetosixmembersin spring2009.Thenewstationcargoincludesadditionalsleepingquarters,asecondtoiletanda resistanceexercisedevice.Theshuttlealsowilldeliveranewcrewmemberandbringback anotheraftermorethanfivemonthsaboardthestation. Nearthecenterofthepatch,theconstellationOrionreflectsthegoalsofthehu manspaceflightprogram,returningustotheandontoMars,whichare alsoshown.Atthetopofthepatchisthegoldsymboloftheastronautoffice.The sunburst,justclearingthehorizonoftheEarth,powersalltheseeffortsthrough thesolararraysofthestation’sconfigurationorbitinghighabove. SPACEWALKS Eachwilllastapproximately6.5hours. • Onflightday5,PiperandBowenwillconductexternaloutfittingofthestation.Theywillreplaceade pletednitrogentankandadeviceusedtohelptheflowofcoolantfromthetruss,thebackboneofthe station.TheyalsowillremovethermalcoversfromtheJapaneseKibomoduletoinspecttheberthing mechanismwherethemodule'sexposedfacilitywillbeinstalledduringtheSTS127missionin2009. Theyalsowillstartinspecting,cleaningandlubricatingthestarboardSARJandbeginreplacing11of 12trundlebearings.OnewasreplacedduringtheSTS124missioninJune. • Onflightday7,PiperandKimbroughwillrelocateequipmentcarts,settingthestagefortheinstalla tionofthestarboardS6truss.Thespacewalkersalsowilllubricatetheendeffector,orhand,ofthe Canadarm2,thestation'sroboticarm.TheyalsowillcontinuelubricatingthestarboardSARJandre placingtrundlebearings. • Onflightday9,PiperandBowenwillcompletestarboardSARJcleaning,lubricatingandtrundlebear ingwork. • Onflightday11,BowenandKimbroughwillremoveseveralthermalcoversontheportSARJ. KimbroughwilllubricatetheportSARJ,whileBowenwillreinstallthethermalinsulationcovers (removedonflightday5)onKibo.HethenwillinstalltwoGPSantennasonKibo'slogisticsmodule, whileKimbroughinstallsanewTVcameraonthetruss.Iftimepermits,theywillremovelaunchre strainthoseclampsoncoolinglines.

Figure 1: Shuttle carrying MPLM Figure 2: SARJ locations Figure 3: Trundle bearing installed FACTS & FIGURES • STS126isthe124thspaceshuttleflight,the27thflighttothestation,the22ndflightforEndeavour andthefourthflightin2008.Themissionwillbedockedduringthe10thanniversaryofthespacesta tiononNov.20. • The Leonardo MultiPurposeLogisticsModulewillbeinstalledtothestationonflightday4andre turnedtotheshuttle’scargobayonflightday13foritsreturntoEarth. • Thestation'sthreeMPLMsarethe"movingvans"insidetheshuttle'scargobaythatcarrysup pliestoandfromthespacestation. • Leonardowillbemovedtoandfromthecomplexusingthestation'sroboticarm. • Thepressurizedmodules,builtasajointventurebetweenNASAandtheItalianSpace Agency,gettheirdistinctnamesfromgreatengineersinItalianhistory:paintersLeonardoand Rafaello,andsculptorDonatello. • TheMPLMwilldeliversystemstobeinstalledintheU.S.DestinylabandHarmonynode,suchas: • Twowaterrecoverysystemsracksforrecyclingurineintopotablewater,asecondtoiletsys tem,newgalleycomponents,twonewfoodwarmers,afoodrefrigerator,anexperimentfreezer andacombustionscienceexperimentrack. • Twoseparatesleepingquartersandaresistanceexercisedevicethatallowsstationcrew memberstoperformavarietyofexercises,suchasbenchpresses,deadlifts,situpsand squats. • SpacewalkerswilllubricatetheSARJswithahighvacuumgreaselubricantcalledBraycote.Braycote wasselectedforitslubricationqualities,becauseitischemicallyinertandnonflammable.TheSARJ workonSTS126isexpectedtoatleastextendthelivesofthejoints.
