BIGAZZI received 18 May 1998; revised version accepted 30 July 1998 ABSTRACT - A revision of the Italian entities of Anchusa and of the rdated genera Anchusella, Lycopsis, Cynoglottis, Hormuzakia and Pentaglottis was carried out in view of the poor systematic knowledge of some entities of the national flora. The taxonomic treatment relies on a wide comparative basis, including macro- and micromorphological, karyological, chorological and ecological data. After a general description of some poorly known microCharacters of vegetative and reproductive structures, analytical keys, nomenclatural types, synonymies, descriptions, distribution maps and iconographies are provided for each entity. -

IN SITU CONSERVATION - SPECIES INFORMATION SHEET Project partner: National Botanical Conservatory of Corsica of the Office of the Environment of Corsica Island CORSICA Species name (Family) Anchusa crispa Viv. subsp. crispa (Boraginaceae) Common name French: Buglosse crépue Plant description V Herbaceous taxa, hispid, initially in a rosette of hard leaves, prostrate on the sand, then presenting with floriferous stems, leafy, littlely branched from the rosette. Leaved leaves, oblong, sinuated-crispy, from 4-10 mm broad to 3-20 cm long. Terminal inflorescences fomed uniparous scorpioid cymes, elongating during the flowering period, with bearing flowers onaxils of small hairy bracts. Small, actinomorphous, gamosepal calyx flowers and blue gamopetal corolla. Fruits: 4 achenes per flower, with a very small aril. V Flowering occurs between April and May. Fruiting from late May to September. Pollination is done by insects and the seed spread is generally barochorial, even some cases of zoochory is signaled due to ants and caws. V A. crispa is a sabulicolous, heliophilous, nitrophilous or subnitrophilic plant, xerophilic, well tolerant of sea salt, but very sensitive to sand cover during storms Distribution This species is endemic of Corsica and Sardinia. There are: 2 populations located in the east coast of Corsica and 8 populations located on the sand along the North West of Sardinia. Map Two subspecies of A. crispa exist in Corsica: A. crispa valincoana and A. crispa crispa . The crispa subspecies is only present on the east coast of the island. List of 735 prioritised plant taxa of CARE-MEDIFLORA project In situ and/or ex situ conservation actions were implemented during CARE-MEDIFLORA for 436 of the prioritised plant taxa. Island(s) of occurrence: Balearic Islands (Ba), Corsica (Co), Sardinia (Sa), Sicily (Si), Crete (Cr), Cyprus (Cy) Occurrence: P = present; A = alien (not native to a specific island); D = doubtful presence Distribution type: ENE = Extremely Narrow Endemic (only one population) NE = Narrow Endemic (≤ five populations) RE = Regional Endemic (only one Island) IE = Insular Endemic (more than one island) W = distributed in more islands or in a wider area. Distribution type defines the "regional responsibility" of an Island on a plant species. Criteria: Red Lists (RL): plant species selected is included in the red list (the plant should be EN, CR or VU in order to justify a conservation action); Regional Responsibility (RR): plant species selected plays a key role for the island; the "regional responsibility" criterion is the first order of priority at local level, because it establishes a high priority to plants whose distribution is endemic to the study area (an island in our specific case). Bruggers A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1974 ' __ U J 591913 W A'W .'X55’ ABSTRACT A study of pinioned, free-ranging Mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) was conducted from 1971-1974 at a 25-acre estate. The purposes 'were to 1) document breeding biology and behaviors, nesting phenology, and time budgets; 2) describe displays associated with copulatory behavior, pair-formation and maintenance, and social encounters; and 3) determine the female's role in male social display and pair formation. The intensive observations (in excess of 400 h) included several full-day and all-night periods. Display patterns were recorded (partially with movies) arid analyzed. The female's role in social display was examined through a series of male and female introductions into yearling and adult male "display parties." Mandarins formed strong seasonal pair bonds, which re-formed in successive years if both individuals lived. Clutches averaged 9.5 eggs and were begun by yearling females earlier and with less fertility (78%) than adult females (90%). Incubation averaged 28-30 days. Duckling development was rapid and sexual dimorphism evident. 9 Adults and yearlings of both sexes could be separated on the basis of primary feather length; females, on secondary feather pigmentation. Mandarin daily activity patterns consisted of repetitious feeding, preening, and loafing, but the duration and patterns of each activity varied with the social periods. -
