The Ivy and You Sorority, Incorporated® Omega Omega Chapter, Philadelphia, PA Chartered in 1926 Soror Carol Parkinson-Hall, Basileus

Volume 66, Issue 1 January 2020

Happy New Year! In this issue: The year 2020 is the beginning of not only a new year, but a new decade faced with fresh perspectives,  Upcoming events endless possibilities and enhanced purpose. Omega Omega has the ability to create a brighter tomorrow  Excellence Program for the disenfranchised, the oppressed, and the voiceless globally. When I think of 2020, vision comes to my mind. As a child I boasted of having 20/20 vision and not having to wear glasses. I knew students who would try to memorize the Snellen chart just to be able to claim the coveted 20/20 vision. This is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. Vision, as a noun, is sight and, as a verb, is envision and both are useful definitions as we expand our outreach and strengthen our bonds of sisterhood. Our founders had a vision fair 112 years ago that was clear and concise to ensure our perpetuity and to improve the quality of life for all mankind. As we completed our end of the year reports and prepare our awards books, reflections of 2019 must propel us to ask questions. What do we see with 20/20 vision? How can we improve our vision and what resources will it take? What is our vision and what role do each of us play in that collective vision? Do we see Service with 20/20 vision? Do we see Membership with 20/20 vision? Do we see Connection with 20/20 vision?

This same question can be applied to every committee and aspect of Omega Omega. This year is a critical year with the US census, presidential elections and yes, the 69th Boule. Let’s sharpen our vision by staying informed and abreast of the issues to enable better service to all mankind. Let’s sharpen our vision by seeing with our hearts to build a stronger sisterhood.

I see you and what I see is sheer beauty and love, Sisterly, Soror Carol

I can see clearly now the rain is gone I can see all obstacles in my way Here is that rainbow I've been praying for It's gonna be a bright (bright) Bright (bright) sunshiny…day Johnny Nash

4 Membership Soror Ashley Session, Second Anti-Basileus and Membership Chairman

Happy New Year Sorors,

Last year, we renewed our commitment to the reclamation and reactivation of our sorors through Reactivation Workplace. Omega Omega accepted the challenge and engaged in an intentional campaign, which resulted in the successful reactivation of 33 members this year in Omega Omega, This exceeds our 2019 goal for reactivation. Thank you sorors, for your hard work.

This year, our theme is “It’s a Celebration! 2020 Reactivation Day” as we gear up for reactivation success in 2020. We must keep the momentum going towards reclaiming, reactivating, and retaining members, which are essential elements of the Excellence Membership Program.

During the next several weeks, in preparation for Reactivation Day 2020, please join me in sharing the importance of membership to you, through the “Membership is Why” campaign. Sorors, you may submit Individual “Membership is Why” videos. The Membership is Why videos will be incorporated throughout social media through January 15, 2020.

While holding your card, tell viewers why our membership is important, historical, a movement or anything you can think of in 30 seconds or less. 6 History and Archives Committee The Philadelphia Boules

Seventh Boule – December 27-31, 1924 “Setting the Standard” In 1924, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® proudly held its 7th Boule in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founder and Mu Chapter hosted the first “big” Boule for 115 sorors, including Supreme Basileus L. Pearl Mitchell, from December 27th through the 31st. The 1924 Boule is noted as having Mr. and Mrs. Robeson as guests, being the “first to have enough men at our dance,” as well as having the first banquet, and the first sightseeing trip. Events were held at various locations throughout the city. The Directorate Meeting and Boule sessions were held at the YWCA at 1605 Catharine Street and a reception was held at the private home of a prominent Black banker and his wife at 123 South 41st Street. The Public Meeting and Formal Dance were held at the Dunbar Theatre (Broad & Lombard Streets) and at Pythian Hall (19th & Addison Streets) respectively. A culminating New Year’s Night formal dance was hosted by the Lambda Chapter and held at the International House in New York, NY.

Some of the important actions carried out at this Boule included the compilation of previously approved amendments into a single document for ready reference, the creation of an Achievement Cup to recognize chapter excellence, adding “Boule” as a membership classification, and reviewing the efforts of the Vocational Guidance initiative.

Philadelphia sorors were the first to elevate the magnitude of and to shape the experience of our international meeting beyond a time for carrying out sorority business. The 1924 Boule pales to how grand Boule has become, but it will never be surpassed for the traditions set and expectation of excellence that it is remembered for.

Soror Sarah R. Brown

Twenty-Fourth Boule – December 27-30, 1941 “All for Defense, Defense for All”

African American women played important roles during World War II, both at home and in uniform. The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ® held their 24th Boule from December 27-30, 1941 on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. A total of 283 sorors registered for the Boule. The presence of Founders Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, , Lillie Burke, and Anna Easter Brown evidenced the importance of hosting the 1941 Boule during the time of a national crisis. In addition to the national commendations for its philanthropic and program activities, the speech given by the Supreme Basileus Dorothy Boulding Ferebee – titled “Alpha Kappa Alpha Reconstructs While Defending” – is said to have laid the foundation for the next decades of operational strategy and activism for the sorority. “Leaders and members were asked to make plans for a two-year period and {beyond} in which the business activity and life of the organization will keep alive the spirit of purposeful action.”

Noted actions taken during the 1941 Boule included imploring the Conference of National Presidents “to make every possible effort to eliminate brutality and all undignified initiatory ceremonies,” approving the use of $5,000 in savings to purchase bonds, the authorization of the completion of a survey of members’ qualifications, skills and capabilities for inclusion in a war resource directory and the presentation of a draft Constitution. More importantly, under the leadership of Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, the work and directives of the 1941 Boule would set the stage for the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha to become pioneers of the post-World War II Civil Rights Movement.

Soror Dana Y. King

7 History and Archives Committee Forty-First Boule – August 9-14, 1964 “Advancement Through Knowledge and Action”

The 41st Boule convened in Philadelphia, at the Sheraton Hotel, from August 9-14, 1964. Events which preceded the Boule – the unpopular Vietnam War, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s declaration of the “War on Poverty,” preparation for the New York World’s Fair, the 1964 Olympics and undoubtedly, the noteworthy events in the areas of civil rights and social justice – were major factors in the program selections, presentations and resolutions of the 41st Boule. The platform for the Boule, adopted by the 16th Supreme Basileus Julia Brogdon Purnell, was “Advancement Through Knowledge and Action.” Nearly 1,000 sorority members registered in Philadelphia for this Boule.

The public meeting was held at the Irvine Auditorium of the University of Pennsylvania. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who spoke on the violence occurring in America’s major cities. Dr. King was presented with the Eleanor Roosevelt Medallion of Honor by Dr. Marjorie Parker, 15th Supreme Basileus. Whitney Young, Executive Director of the National Urban League, addressed the Boule at an open meeting where he commended Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for its work in the areas of civil rights, health and welfare, educational advancement, and social justice.

The Boule accepted several constitutional changes and confirmed eight resolutions. A major constitutional change was to select the Supreme Basileus two years before she would take office, in order to ensure continuity and a smooth transition. Another was the approval of the International Region, the tenth territory of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The members of the 1964 Boule and their guests were entertained by top performers of the day: actress Cecelia Hodges and jazz artist, Oscar Brown, Jr.

In retrospect, it was fitting that at a time of civil and social unrest in America, the 1964 Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the cradle of liberty and freedom.
