6 7 The Indianapolis Zoo is actively involved with two other big cat species in addition to cheetahs: African lions and the truly magnificent Amur tigers. Both species have long been a part of the Zoo and both are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a program among accredited institutions to conserve species and ensure genetic diversity in the captive population. The Indianapolis Zoo is home to nearly 30 different SSP animals in its collection, including things large (African elephants and white rhinos) and things small (aquatic box turtles and indigo snakes). Our work with these animals covers a multitude of objectives, including public education, research and reproduction.

Significant developments in 2010 include the addition of a young male lion, with a plan for lion cubs in the near future. The Zoo also acquired another young male cat in 2010—a male Amur tiger, on loan from the Pittsburgh Zoo, primed to produce cubs of this endangered tiger species with one of the Zoo’s female tigers.

The Indianapolis Zoo has long been a supporter of and participant in Amur tiger conservation, and we will step up even more in 2011 with the opening of an all-new Amur tiger exhibit, “Tiger Forest presented by Citizens Energy Group.” We also provide funding for tiger research in Russia by the husband-and-wife team of tiger experts, Dr. Linda Kerley and Misha Borisenko, whose dramatic A primary strategy is story is detailed in the new exhibit. to both inform and inspire public interest in conservation. 8 9 > The Zoo joined with Polar Bears International as Arctic Ambassadors and organized a special event at an area elementary school that included classes, crafts, speakers and a tree-planting event. Thanks to our partners at Lowes for providing 100 trees that will help keep harmful gases out of the atmosphere. Partial funding and support by the Zoo also allowed one of our teen volunteers to attend a weeklong camp in polar bear habitat in Churchill, Canada, where she participated in activities centered on empowering teens to lead grass roots efforts on behalf of polar bears.

Madagascar Fauna Interest Group – This group of zoos and other nonprofit organizations works together to save lemurs and other wildlife found in Madagascar. Zoos have helped establish and support habitat restoration efforts, patrols to deter illegal activities within preserves and environmental education programs for children and teachers.

African Wildlife Foundation – A new Zoo conservation partner in 2010, the African Wildlife The zoo makes connections with conservationists from around the world. Conservation Heroes: The 2010 Indianapolis Prize

And the winner is…Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton of Save the Elephants, who became the third honoree to receive this most prestigious of awards for animal conservation. The most important of the Zoo’s international initiatives, the Indianapolis Prize brings public attention and support to the dedicated conservationists around the world who are working to save the Earth’s most endangered creatures. The Prize comes with a check for $100,000 and the Lilly Medal, and, like his predecessors George Archibald and George Schaller, Douglas-Hamilton planned to invest the money into furthering his cause. A portion of the prize money went into rebuilding the Save the Elephants camp in Kenya, which was heavily damaged last year by raging floods.

Clad in the kilt of his Scottish heritage, Douglas-Hamilton received his award at the Indianapolis Prize Gala presented by Cummins Inc. on September 25, 2010. Hosted by actress and activist Alfre Woodard, the Gala showcased not only the invaluable contributions of Douglas-Hamilton to conservation but the vital work done by all the Prize finalists. It was a magical evening filled with applause and, more importantly, support for saving wildlife everywhere.
