Fuchsia Flower Shawl !1 of !7 This pattern is an adaptation of a tablecloth design by Herbert Niebling. It was originally published in Frau und Mutter Verlag Wien, Kunststricken in 1952 and the original pamphlet is out of print. I have charted it with my adaptations, and in color, to make the pattern as a large circular shawl. My shawl was knit on size 2 needles, using 2750 yards of a heavy lace weight wool yarn, yielding a 75” diameter shawl. The pattern has 251 rounds, with the option of a simpler border, (231 rounds). There are general written directions and a fully charted pattern, but no line by line written out directions. The chart has only been test- knitted by me, so be sure to notify me if you find errors. The project is suitable for intermediate knitters. Fuchsia Flower Shawl Page !2 of !7 General Directions: 1. Make a swatch of stockinette stitch with your chosen yarn and needles, and practice a few wrapped stitches on it as well. The stems and leaves of the pattern are in stockinette, so they should be at a gauge to please you. 2. Cast on 8 stitches and knit one round, then commence chart. Repeat each chart line 8 times. 3. Odd number rounds are the right side rounds, evens the wrong side rounds. Pay attention to the charted even (wrong side) rounds, there are a few of them in the pattern. On the non-charted even (wrong side) rounds knit the stitches as presented, i.e., knit the knits, purl the purls, and ktbls, the previous round’s ktbls. 4. When there are double yarn overs, knit one, purl one on the next even round. When a round starts and ends with a yarn over, start the beginning of the round with a double yo, inserting the marker between. Omit the last yarn over, slipping the Yo made at the beginning onto the right needle. The following even round, purl the first YO in the round, and when you come end, knit the YO that was slipped together with the strand made when it was slipped. 5. The charts for rounds 1-111 are on one page, then the charts for rounds 112 to 217 are spread onto two pages: work the right chart, then continue on the left chart, for each round. Wrapped Stitches: Knit to the marked wrap stitch group. Insert needle between the last stitch to be wrapped and the following stitch that is not in the wrap. Pull a loop through and put it on the right needle, making sure it is not twisted. Knit through the back of this loop and place that stitch back on the right needle. Then pull another loop through as before and place on right needle. now knit this loop together with the previous stitch (the one you have just placed on the needle after the first loop) and place it on the needle. If you want a thicker wrap, repeat the last step again. Now start the group of stitches being wrapped with a k2tog, (the stitch you have added making the wrap plus the first stitch of the wrapped group) and knit the rest of the stitches. Continue the rest of the round as charted. (If there is a YO before the wrapped stitch, it is better to pick up the running thread rather than make a YO.) It takes some practice to get the tension the way you want it on these wrapped stitches, so practice on a swatch. They look “wonky” until a few rounds later. Border Rounds 229-247: Repeat 24 times per round. Binding Off after the border: 1. Knit one round 2. *Knit 3 together, Yo, Yo* (repeat from * to * for the rest of the round.) 3. Knit, knitting 3-5 stitches into the double yo, depending on how big you would like the loop to be. 4. Knit one to three rounds plain before bind off, depending on how thick you want the edge of the loops to be. 5. Stretchy bind off: knit 1, slip back to left needle, *knit 1, k2tog through back loop, slip back to left needle,* repeat from * to * to finish bind off. Simple Border Option: follow above binding off directions after round 228..
