On and immediately adjacent to a reservation area of approxiiiiately 16 million acres in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico/and southern Utah, nearly 50,000 Navajos make their home. Sheep raising has been the main occupation of these people for well over a century. After years of continued overgrazing, the land has become badly eroded and will not support a sheep industry of sufficient size to maintain the constantly growing Navajo population. The number of mature sheep and goats on the reservation has been reduced to about 550,000 head, but the total number of stock, in- cluding horses and cattle, is still considerably in excess of the carrying capacity of the range, according to estimates of the Soil Conservation Service, of the United States Department of Agriculture. -

Five years ago, Yarn Market News made a change. Because of dwindling advertising dollars, we announced that we would be publishing three issues a year instead of five. It is of aboriginal origin ; and while European art has undoubtedly modifled it, the extent and nature of the foreign influence is easily traced. It is by no means certain, still there are many reasons for supposing, that the Navajos learned their craft from the Pueblo Indians, and that, too, since the advent of the Spaniards; yet the pupils, if such they be, far excel their masters to-day in the beauty and quality of their work. -

The smaller size needle for the applied I‐cord gives a tighter effect but you could also use your larger dpns from the sleeves. ON YOUR WAY TO THE MASTERS Blocking of Hand Knits by binka schwan Blocking is an important step in the knitting process. Unfortunately this very important step is often forgotten or neglected by the knitter. When knitters skip the blocking process they are often unhappy with their finished product. There are many definitions of blocking in knitting books, but most texts agree that the blocking process gives a knitted piece its permanent size and shape. The blocking process is an integral part of all three levels of the Master Hand Knitting Program. All knitted swatches and projects required for each level need to be blocked prior to submission. In addition, Level One requires a report on Blocking and Care of Hand Knits. 1 Either water or steam is used in the blocking process. Once the knitting of a garment is completed, blocking is done on each knitted piece prior to sewing together. Blocking will help adjust and reshape both length and width of pieces that are supposed to be identical. It will also even out the edges of individual pieces so that seaming together is easier. Seamless knitting (knitting in the round) can also be blocked to shape the stitches and smooth the rounds. Blocking after washing a garment will reshape it to the correct proportions. The blocking process allows the knitter to make certain that measurements stated in a pattern match the actual knitted pieces. This ensures a proper size and fit to the finished garment. A few tools are required for the blocking process. A method for getting the swatch/garment wet, a surface to block on, the original pattern, and a tape measure or yardstick to ensure correct 2 measurements are all necessary. -

ARM WARMERS Right Arm Cast on 41 (45) sts. Cuff Begin with Row 1, work in K1, p1 rib until piece measures 1½”, end by working a wrong side row. Begin Pattern Row 1: P3 (4), k13, p7 (8), k1, p17 (19). I knitted it back in 2012 - https://www.ravelry.com/projects/EIGotlib/deckchen (lace border was adopted from Deckchen doily by Herbert Niebling (Burda E 532, Alles aus Garn: Kunststricken Folge 1. Pamphlet). And it so happened that almost at the same time one China lady also had knitted that shawl - https://www.ravelry.com/projects/qian1219/deckchen, and we neither were acquainted nor communicated with each other. That same year I hosted a KAL for this shawl on darievna.ru, and the pattern hit the web. A few years later Andrea Jurgrau, a designer from Germany, published her book New Vintage Lace. There was a similar shawl knitted from the same Niebling’s doily called Nereid. In 2015 this book was translated into Russian and published. I thought nobody would be interested in my Golden Autumn but I had been constantly asked on my web-page - https://vk.com/elena_gotlib to share instructions for my shawl, so I decided to publish my description of the shawl as it was in 2012. This is a crescent shaped shawl, and the body can be worked either way – top down or bottom up, with increases starting from the neckline center or with short rows, with Center Stitch or without it, in plain stockinette stitch or in any other stitch pattern. The version I like most is a stockinette stitch body knit top down, with the Center Stitch and with 6 increases on each RS row – 2 increases at each side of the body, inside borders, and 1 increase at each side of the Center Stitch. -
