St. Stephen Parish May 24, 2015 Pentecost Sunday

n the evening of that first day of O the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Dear Parishioners of St. Stephen;

Over the next several months we will undoubtedly read more and more about the upcoming of Padre Junipero Serra. I mentioned a week or two ago that I would have more to say on this issue. The is scheduled to canonize Father Serra during his September trip to the USA.

Critics of this canonization have claimed that Serra represents a colonial system that destroyed native cultures and that he abused Native Americans at the mis- sions. Taken out of context there are plenty of texts that would certainly lead one to come to that conclusion. Like those European explorers who sailed to the Ha- waiian Islands and decimated the native population by importing disease, Span- ish explorers can be accused of doing no different. Serra, no matter how unfair- ly, has become a symbol of all colonization of that time. Nevertheless sufficient evidence exists to show that he also helped to soften the harshness of the military strategies of subju- gation.

Hopefully we have grown and matured in our international dealings and cultural sensitivity (though I continue to wonder about that!). Historians will warn how carefully the historical endeavor must go about its business. Nuance, perspective, and cultural context cannot be just ignored and overlooked. We need to be honest that an "old evangelization" was not always done with the care and love with which we would go about it today.

Several weeks ago visited the North American College, the US seminary in Rome. With an eye on his upcoming trip to our country he celebrated Mass with 250 seminarians from more than 100 American dioceses as well as from Australia and Canada. There he spoke of this controversy as kickoff for his trip. He had this to say: Serra "...defended the indigenous peoples against abuse by the colonizers." He pointed to Serra's zeal which "...excites us and challenges us." He acknowledged the shortcomings of all missionaries, but added: "I wonder if today we are able to respond with the same generosity and courage to the call of God, who invites us to leave everything in order to worship him, to follow him, to rediscover him in the face of the poor, to proclaim him to those who have not known Christ and, therefore, have not experienced the embrace of his mercy."

Pope Francis, the first Pope of the Americas, listed dozens of men and women who ministered in the Americas like Juan Diego, , and Oscar Romero, praying that "the life of our Ameri- can continent may be rooted ever more deeply in the Gospel it has received." He concluded by noting that "...people seem to enjoy finding the shortcomings of candidates for sainthood like Blessed Juni- pero Serra, but they should ask themselves if they would have his generosity."

We must, of course, learn from our past and not repeat the mistakes and even sins made in ignorance. The Pope has called for a "new evangelization," one that appreciates the diversity of culture, a rever- sal of the arrogance of past missionary endeavors, and a humility that aims to serve and not dominate. I'm not sure that Serra deserves the blame of all past missionary activity.

Since writing the above, one of our parishioners emailed me a most helpful article by the Jesuit Thomas Reese which makes reference to the work of an historian and professor at Santa Clara Uni- versity, Robert Senkewicz, who, along with his wife, wrote, "Junipero Serra: California, Indians, and the Transformation of a Missionary." He strikes a healthy balance between the critics and the support- ers. Perhaps I can share some of those valuable ideas another day. (continued) Pastor’s letter continued

On a very different note: Kudos to our school students who presented an outstanding Musical, "The Wizard of Oz". The performance at Mercy High School was outstanding. It was difficult to believe this was an elementary school production. It was that good. Sophie Egan was super-impressive as Dorothy. But all the cast was superb. Congratulations to you all.

Last Monday, May 18, our Faith Formation students along with their parents celebrated the end of their school year with prayer and party. It was a grand day; and I can't sufficiently thank enough Mrs. Wong and all the volunteer teachers for all they do to bring the Gospel to our young people. Have a safe summer and we will see you in the Fall.

Wishing you and your family God’s continued blessings, I am sincerely yours in Christ,

Your pastor
