Essential Question: Are you what you eat?

In this unit, you will explore information about nutrition, recipes, and eating out.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Learn about the food groups, nutrients, and health benefits of a balanced diet. 2. Explore choices and mathematically the difference in choices. 3. Practice making healthy snacks and following recipes. 4. Create a Math and Nutrition Powerpoint along the way reflecting your knowledge and nutrition goals.

Tasks:

DAY 1: Today you will complete a survey about your eating habits and nutrition. Summarize your beliefs on “Survey Summary” slide.

DAY 2: Create your “perfect plate” on “BEFORE: My Perfect Plate” slide. Explain each component.

DAY 3: Today you will learn about a balanced diet. The United States government has health guidelines as laid out by www.choosemyplate.gov. Start this activity by watching the video on brainpop and complete the worksheet (print or save to your I:drive ).

Complete the webquest questions about each food group using the worksheet (print or save to your I:drive.)

Look back at the “perfect plate” slide you’d created. Think about how you can improve this plate by creating a new plate on “AFTER: My NEW Perfect Plate” slide. Explain why this is a better option.

Go to the Choose My Plate website and complete the Daily Food Plan. Print out the top arrow PDF of your results. You will need this for later activities.

If you have time, you can go and play games: Analyze My Plate, Virtual Grocery Store (Add Variety) , various nutrition games, or Match Game.

DAY 4: Dairy Group. Create a “Dairy” slide with pictures of healthy dairy choices, serving sizes, and health benefits. Find a recipe on allrecipes.com or Kraft using dairy. Copy and paste it on the Dairy Recipe slide.

If you finish, you can take a virtual tour of The Story of Milk.

DAY 5: Group. Create a “Fruit” slide with pictures of fruit. Complete the chart explaining the value of each “color” of . Show options from a variety of colors. Experts say we should eat the rainbow! Find a fruit recipe and paste it to the Fruit Recipe slide.

DAY 6: In the Kitchen! When the activity is complete, complete the Parfait Reflection slide. What did you learn? What would you do differently next time?

DAY 7: GROUP. Create a “Veggie” slide including a variety of pictures of . Use a variety of colors again. Read this article for more information and ideas. Find a veggie recipe from allrecipes, kraft or other site. Copy and paste it on Veggie Recipe slide.

DAY 8: GROUP. On the Protein slide, add pictures of lean , beans/, nuts/seeds, seafood, and others that you find. Find a recipe to paste on the Protein Recipe slide.

DAY 9: (carbohydrate) GROUP. Listen to the article about carbohydrates. Create a Carbohydrate slide showing healthy choices. Find a recipe using healthy carbohydrates and paste it on the Carbohydrate Recipe slide.

Now that you’ve complete the five food groups, test your knowledge by playing Mission Nutrition!

DAY 10: In the Kitchen. When the activity is complete, complete a sandwich reflection slide. What did you like about this lab? What would you do differently next time?

DAY 11: Fast Food Frenzy I. Think of your favorite restaurant. Go to their webpage and look up your typical or favorite meal from that restaurant. Complete the following worksheet (print or save to I:drive.) If you have time, you can do this for up to three restaurants.

DAY 12: Fast Food Frenzy II. Now that you’ve seen how nutritional (or not!) your typical food choices are, complete the same activity as yesterday, but look for healthier alternatives. Could you live with these choices?

If you finish early, play a game making pizzas.

DAY 13: On the final slide of your Nutrition and Math Powerpoint, write about what you learned from these activities and unit.

EVALUATION: You will be assessed with an inclusive rubric. Print out and/or turn in the following documents:

1) Powerpoint 2) Food Group webquest 3) Brainpop nutrition vocabulary sheet 4) Fast Food Frenzy I and II sheets

In addition, your participation in the Parfait lab and sandwich labs will be evaluated.
