Integral to this concept is the variable and highly subjective distinction made by various parties between “good” and “evil,” “right” and “wrong,” “us” and “them.” This thesis examines these concepts as they relate to the actions and manifestos of the Red Army Faction (die Rote Armee Fraktion) in 1970s Germany, and seeks to understand how its members became regarded as terrorists.

A: I wanted to present a group of children on whom absolute values are being imposed. What I was trying to say was that if someone adopts an absolute principle, when it becomes absolute then it becomes inhuman. The original idea was a children’s choir, who want to make absolute principles concrete, and those who do not live up to them. Of course, this is also a period piece: we looked at photos of the period before World War I to determine costumes, sets, even haircuts. I wanted to describe the atmosphere of the eve of world war. There are countless films that deal with the Nazi period, but not the pre-period and pre-conditions, which is why I wanted to make this film.

    1. Title: 13 Tzameti ISBN: 5060018488721 Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men. 2. Title: 12 Angry Men ISBN: 5050070005172 Adapted from Reginald Rose's television play, this film marked the directorial debut of Sidney Lumet. At the end of a murder trial in New York City, the 12 jurors retire to consider their verdict. The man in the dock is a young Puerto Rican accused of killing his father, and eleven of the jurors do not hesitate in finding him guilty. However, one of the jurors (Henry Fonda), reluctant to send the youngster to his death without any debate, returns a vote of not guilty. From this single event, the jurors begin to re-evaluate the case, as they look at the murder - and themselves - in a fresh light. 3. Title: 12:08 East of Bucharest ISBN: n/a 12:08pm on the 22 December 1989 was the exact time of Ceausescu's fall from power in Romania. Sixteen years on, a provincial TV talk show decides to commemorate the event by asking local heroes to reminisce about their own contributions to the revolution. But securing suitable guests proves an unexpected challenge and the producer is left with two less than ideal participants - a drink addled history teacher and a retired and lonely sometime-Santa Claus grateful for the company.

A: Why do people follow an ideology? German fascism is the best-known example of ideological delusion. The grownups of 1933 and 1945 were children in the years prior to World War I. What made them susceptible to following political Pied Pipers? My film doesn’t attempt to explain German fascism. It explores the psychological preconditions of its adherents. What in people’s upbringing makes them willing to surrender their responsibilities? What in their upbringing makes them hate? Q.

  • The End of Imperialism Was the Birth of Nationalism, a Wave of Rising
New German Identity: Reworking the Past and Defining the Present in Contemporary German Cinema Constance McCarney Dr. Robert Gregg Spring 2008 General University Honors McCarney 2 The end of imperialism was the birth of nationalism, a wave of rising consciousness that swept over the conquered areas of the world and brought them to their feet with a defiant cry, “We are a Nation!” These new nations, almost all multiethnic states, struggled in defining themselves, found themselves locked in civil wars over what the citizen of this nation looked like and who s/he was. The old nations, locked in a Cold War, looked on, confident in their own national cohesion and unity. But the end of the Cold War proved to be the birth of complicated new identity concerns for Europe. Yugoslavia splintered in terrible ethnic conflict. France rioted over the expression of religious affiliation. Germany tried desperately to salvage the hope that brought down the Wall and stitch itself back together. For Germany the main questions of identity linger, not only who is a German, but what does it mean to be German? In the aftermath of the great upheavals in Germany’s recent past, the Second World War and the fall of the Third Reich, German films did their best to ignore these questions of identity and the complications of the past. But in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, a New German Cinema arose that sought to work through the complex issues of West Germany: the legacy of the Nazi Past, American occupation, the Berlin Wall and divided Germany, the radicalism of the time period in a global context, and the civil rights movements, particularly the women’s movement.
