1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Searching for existence is actually one of human efforts in building his meaning of life. Someone can find the meaning of life when he thinks that he manages to actualize his idealism. By actualizing his idealism, man can find his identity. In the scope of the society, then his existence will be built. The existence of a man can be seen from two sides. From the outside view, a man appears to be just another natural creature while from the inside view, he is an entirely independent universe, the center of his own infinity. Man is equal, but every human has his own worldexistentially, which differ him from other individual. This only understandable in the term of individual’s existence, his particular experience of life. Thus, to understand a man, somebody cannot merely appreciate him from his physical appearance. In etymology concept the word "existence" comes from the Latin word existere means "to appear", "to arise", "to become", or "to be", but literally, it means "to stand out". Everyone has their own existence, the existence is as the sigh of his purpose, the purpose is what he wants to become. The search for existence also appears in the major character of Red movie directed by Robert Schwentke. Red is a 2010 Americanaction comedy film inspired by the three- issuecomic book series of the same namecreated byWarren EllisandCully 1 2 Hamner, and published by theDC ComicsimprintHomage. The End of Imperialism Was the Birth of Nationalism, a Wave of Rising
New German Identity: Reworking the Past and Defining the Present in Contemporary German Cinema Constance McCarney Dr. Robert Gregg Spring 2008 General University Honors McCarney 2 The end of imperialism was the birth of nationalism, a wave of rising consciousness that swept over the conquered areas of the world and brought them to their feet with a defiant cry, “We are a Nation!” These new nations, almost all multiethnic states, struggled in defining themselves, found themselves locked in civil wars over what the citizen of this nation looked like and who s/he was. The old nations, locked in a Cold War, looked on, confident in their own national cohesion and unity. But the end of the Cold War proved to be the birth of complicated new identity concerns for Europe. Yugoslavia splintered in terrible ethnic conflict. France rioted over the expression of religious affiliation. Germany tried desperately to salvage the hope that brought down the Wall and stitch itself back together. For Germany the main questions of identity linger, not only who is a German, but what does it mean to be German? In the aftermath of the great upheavals in Germany’s recent past, the Second World War and the fall of the Third Reich, German films did their best to ignore these questions of identity and the complications of the past. But in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, a New German Cinema arose that sought to work through the complex issues of West Germany: the legacy of the Nazi Past, American occupation, the Berlin Wall and divided Germany, the radicalism of the time period in a global context, and the civil rights movements, particularly the women’s movement. -

Towards a History of the Serial Killer in German Film History
FOCUS ON GERMAN STUDIES 14 51 “Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen...” – Towards a History of the Serial Killer in German Film History JÜRGEN SCHACHERL Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen, dann kommt Haarmann auch zu dir, mit dem Hackehackebeilchen macht er Leberwurst aus dir. - German nursery rhyme t is not an unknown tendency for dark events to be contained and to find expression in nursery rhymes and children’s verses, such as I the well-known German children’s rhyme above. At first instance seemingly no more than a mean, whiny playground chant, it in fact alludes to a notorious serial killer who preyed on young male prostitutes and homeless boys. Placed in this context, the possible vulgar connotations arising from Leberwurst become all the more difficult to avoid recognizing. The gravity of these events often becomes drowned out by the sing-song iambics of these verses; their teasing melodic catchiness facilitates the overlooking of their lyrical textual content, effectively down-playing the severity of the actual events. Moreover, the containment in common fairy tale-like verses serves to mythologize the subject matter, rendering it gradually more fictitious until it becomes an ahistorical prototype upon a pedestal. Serial killer and horror films have to an arguably large extent undergone this fate – all too often simply compartmentalized in the gnarly pedestal category of “gore and guts” – in the course of the respective genres’ development and propagation, particularly in the American popular film industry: Hollywood. The gravity and severity of the serial murder phenomenon become drowned in an indifferent bloody splattering of gory effects. -
