In this essay, I first demonstrate how Holmes represents transgression, and I examine how being presented with a transgressive hero alters our attitudes towards transgression. I look at the differing ways in which characters in The Sign of the Four and A Scandal in Bohemia3 present crime and I attempt to put this in the context of how crime can be presented. Watson charitably remarks of Holmes that he "had observed that a small vanity underlay [his] companion's quiet and didactic manner"4. It is closer to arrogance. "I abhor the dull routine of existence,"5 Holmes decries, evidently believing that his personal abilities elevate him above having to endure the mundanities of life. Holmes is misogynistic: "Women are never to be entirely trusted - not the best of them"6. Rogers was a professor of natural philosophy at the College of William and Mary when he described his vision for a “new polytechnic institute” in a letter to his brother Henry in 1846. 1861: MIT granted its official charter: ‘a society of arts, a museum of arts, and a school of industrial science’ https://libraries.mit.edu/mithistory/mit-facts/ MIT was founded on April 10, 1861, the date it was granted its official charter by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This was two days before the start of the American Civil War. Over the next several years plans were made and funds raised, with the first classes beginning in 1865. Whether groundbreaking will literally occur at that time now depends upon the speed with which construction contracts can be 3etj but the ceremonies will be held at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall at k p.m. on October 11 in recognition of the significance of the building itself, so long needed by the faculty and student community. Working drawings for the new library were revised early in the summer in accordance with requests from the Board of Visitors. Final drawings then had to be approved by the Beard, the State Art Commission and various state officers in Richmond. The completion of detailed specifications for the building occupied the rest of the summer months. The final draft of the plans and specifications was submitted to the Governor's office on September 20. Named for Earl Gregg Swem, librarian emeritus and a beloved William and Mary figure- the new library will take about two years to complete. It will be the third unit in a new campus area now consisting of Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall and the William Small Physical Laboratory which is scheduled for completion early in l°61j.

Each entity participated in the inculcation of this cultural phenomenon. This includes Conan Doyle’s creation of the character and his perception of that creation, the context of the stories as seen through the reader’s eye, and the publishers’ own actions as intermediary and as agent. The examination of 160 Holmes texts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Wilson Library Rare Book Collection provides insights into the manipulation of the book as object during Conan Doyle’s life, including such elements as cover design, advertisements and illustrations.
