"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

“YOUNG FASHIONED WAYS”: A STUDY OF BLUES AND AUTHENTICITY IN THREE TRANSATLANTIC STUDIO COLLABORATIONS _______________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of San Diego State University _______________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Music _______________ by Conor M. Jamison Fall 2013 iii Copyright © 2013 by Conor M. Jamison All Rights Reserved iv ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS “Young Fashioned Ways”: A Study of Blues and Authenticity in Three Transatlantic Studio Collaborations by Conor M. Jamison Master of Arts in Music San Diego State University, 2013 During the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was popular for blues artists—both British and American—to travel across the Atlantic to record with their fellow musicians. Three albums resulted from these collaborative exchanges which have been popular among fans, but also matters of controversy among blues purists: The London Muddy Waters Sessions, The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions, and Fleetwood Mac: Blues Jam in Chicago. Some feel that the American masters did not play to their own potential, and the white, British sidemen sound weak in comparison with their black, American counterparts. These reflections call into question the ability of the British musicians to achieve authentic blues, as well as the ability of the American players to remain authentic in a collaborative environment. In 2002, musicologist, Allan Moore published his article “Authenticity as Authentication,” wherein, he outlined a tripartite typology that can be uses as a basis for evaluating musical performances in terms of the perception of authenticity by those experiencing it. Moore's typology classifies the factors of authenticity into “first-, second-, and third-person.” Or “authenticity of: 'expression,' 'experience,' and 'execution'”.

  • Jeff Baldori Music
Jeff Baldori Jeff Baldori, singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist began his career studying classical, jazz and boogie under Wayne States; “Matt Michaels” one of the most respected music instructors Detroit has ever known. Michaels, offered endorsement of two students, Jeff being one, to attend and finish high school at the prestigious “Detroit Institute of Musical Arts”. With training in those genres, Jeff began to explore popular music along with R&B during the “Blues Underground” movement of the 60’s. Frequent trips to Chicago to see Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield and The Siegel Band encased a life long love to expand not only his love for the Blues, but to extend his musical capacity. Detroit produced a band named the “Woolies”. The band appointed Jeff to become the lead singer and guitarist. The “Woolies” then went on to L.A. and Jeff sang in the office for Lou Adler at Dunhill Records, which landed the Woolies a contract. Lou’s discovery of talents such as Carol King, The Mama’s and The Papas, Johnny Rivers, and many more was recently honored and inducted to the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” for his many discoveries. The Woolies had their own run with a National #1 hit “Who Do You Love”, and has been noted to be one of the best renditions from the original by Bo Diddley.
