Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

Big Plant Nursery Guide to Choosing a Hardy Palm Palms for the UK Garden Many of us like palms and want to grow hardy palms in our garden. Unfortunately the list of hardy palms suitable for UK gardens is fairly small. It’s also best to buy the largest palm you can afford for increased hardiness and effect, so choosing the right hardy palm is important to make the best purchase. At Big Plant Nursery we have been trialling, growing hardy exotics, hardy and not so hardy palms for over 20 years in our hot in summer but chilly in winter (frost pocket) West Sussex growing site. I’m fairly confident that if you follow our advice you won’t go far wrong. Just bear in mind it’s all about microclimates and using the warmest part of your garden to best advantage. We’ll start with hardy palms that have a realistic chance of not just surviving but growing into magnificent palms. Trachycarpus fortunei, Chusan Palm or Windmill Palm By far the easiest hardy palm growing in most parts of the UK. Trachycarpus fortunei occurs naturally in Northern China where it grows on wooded hill sides able to cope with sun and shade whilst being tolerant of heavy rain and damp soils – Perfect for the UK! Trachycarpus fortunei have big palmate leaves and a hairy fibrous trunk they are head and shoulders above all other hardy palms for growing here in the UK if you want to try a palm this is the one! Amazingly tolerant of most conditions and able to grow quite fast I think every garden should have one (or two) just bear in mind that with such big impressive leaves choose a spot where your chusan will get a little shelter from strong winds… It will grow in exposed positions but always looks better with a little shelter – Invest in one now!! We grow Chusan Palms in our heavy wet (in winter) and dry (summer!) clay. -

Tall) FAN PALMS: Guadalupe Palm (Brahea edulis) – Grows to 20 ft., spread 15 ft., solitary trunk, large handsome fan leaves, (old leaves self-prune), slow growth, temperature range 20-105 °F. Mexican Blue Palm (Brahea armata) – Grows to 20 ft., spread 10 ft., solitary trunk, stiff, palmate fan covered with pale blue bloom, slow growth, temp. range 20-120 °F. Mediterranean or European Fan Palm (Chamerops humilus) – Grows to 15 ft., spread 15 ft., clumping or multiple trunks, 4-5 ft. in diameter; fan, 2-3 ft. diameter stiff leaflets, petiole has sharp spines, slow growth, temp. range 20-120 °F. Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) – Grows to 15 ft. spread 5 ft., solitary trunk covered with old leaf bases, and brown fibrous matted hairy fibers; fan irregularly divided, if not trimmed, the old leaves hang down; temp. range 10–115 °F. FEATHER PALMS: Pigmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelinii) – Grows to 10 ft., solitary trunk, 4-8 in. in diameter, feather with leaflets much softer than those of other Phoenix palms, although the lower leaflets still contain sharp spines, slow growth, temperature range 28-105 °F. Requires shade in this area. Pindo Palm (Butia capitata) - Grows to 20 ft., spread 15 ft., solitary trunk, blue green pinnate feather, slow growth, temp. range 15-120 °F. Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) – Grows to 25 ft. spread 12 ft., solitary trunk ringed with old leaf bases, feather, plumose (leaflets radiating at different angles), fast growth with abundant summer water and fertilizer, temp. -

Palm Evaluation Study at the Mountain Research and Education Center, Blairsville, GA Gary L. Wade Department of Horticulture – Athens University of Georgia Most people associate palms with Florida and tropical islands and can not imagine them growing in Blairsville, Georgia, hardiness zone 6b. It’s unlikely we ever will be able to grow Miami’s Coconut Palms or Orlando’s Queen Palms in Georgia, but there are a number of species known to survive sub-freezing temperatures with little or no damage, thereby making them possible candidates for landscapes throughout Georgia as well as states to the north. Several of these palms are the basis for this study, which is being done in cooperation with the Southeastern Palm Society. Four replicates of eight palm species or cultivars were planted at the Mountain Research and Education Center on June 17, 2005. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the cold hardiness and adaptability of these palms to hardiness zone 6b. Growth measurements and winter injury will be documented over a 5-year period. Palms are reportedly most sensitive to cold injury while they are getting established, and they show increased cold hardiness as they mature. Therefore, winter protection will be provided during the first winter after planting. This will be accomplished by placing a hog-wire hoop over each plant and adding dry pine straw to a depth to cover the center spear (the most cold sensitive part of a palm). A few of the uppermost leaves will be left uncovered so that some photosynthesis can occur. The top and sides of the wire hoop will be covered with 3-mil clear plastic to shield the plants from cold winter winds. -

[Academia Arena, 2009;1(5):81-82]. ISSN 1553-992X. Kumaun Himalaya offers a unique platform for nurturing several endemic taxa and therefore is a type locality of these taxa. Trachycarpus takil Becc. is one of them, which is extremely rare in occurrence in wild state and has a specific habitat preference. Trachycarpus takil Becc. belonging to the family Arecaceae (Palmae) which is a rare and endemic taxon of this Kumaun Himalaya having a very small population in wild state. However, by far no serious attempt towards its conservation has been undertaken. This species has been cultivated around Nainital and Ranikhet in Kumaun Himalaya by Britishers and explore the causes responsible for their being rare and threatened in the wild state. Trachycarpus takil Becc. is a cold temperate species for Palm family and grows in dense humid temperate forest between 2000-2700m altitude usually in association with Alnus nepalensis, Quercus leucotricophera, Q. floribunda, Ilex dipyrena, Rhododendron arboreum, Lyonia ovalifolia, Betula ulnoides, Cupressus torulosa, Abies pindrow, Persea duthiei etc. It usually prefers north and northwestern aspects in hilly slope on moist humus rich soil having localized natural population. The wild adults population of this palm species appears to be extremely rare and highly threatened. -
