COMMENTARIA IN NOVUM TESTAMENTUM: Decorated Latin manuscript on parchment. Paris around 1350. Large quarto. IV + 120 + IV Leaves. Folio. 19 th century vellum. Complete exegeses on the New Testament, by an unknown author. Signed by a scribe named Ludolphus, in the colophon. Possibly, Ludolphus is also the author of the commentary. € 82,000.- / $ 95,000.- This is an unpublished text of a scholastic exegete giving a commentary on the New Testament. The manuscript must have belonged to a member of one of the mendicant orders. While mostly only single book was discussed, like Bonaventura or Stephen Langton does, this commentary covers rather unusually, the entire New Testament. The text betrays great sophistication and it is surely not a mere draft. Many comments are taken from the Homiliae in Evangelia, the Epistolae, and the Regulae pastolaris from Gregorius Magnus, we do not know why the author had a special preference for them. No other version of the text could be found using the usual means. Also Stegmüllers Repertorium biblicum which covers more than 24.000 commentaries in 1 MANUSCRIPTS BEFORE 1600 manuscripts gives no hints on the commentaries present in this manuscripts. It is extremely rare to find a corpus of not registered commentaries .

  • Cardinal Pietro Isvalies, the Bishop of Veszprém
Cardinal Pietro Isvalies, the Bishop of Veszprém Gábor Nemes It was rare that a foreigner, let alone a foreign cardinal, was appointed to a Hungarian diocese1. In the history of Hungary, there were only two such cardinals who became bishops while being legates: Branda da Castiglione and Pietro Isvalies, both of whom obtained the episco- pal see of Veszprém2. Below, the career of the latter is outlined from a Hungarian researcher’s point of view by detailing his office as a legate and his retinue. The Beginning of a Career: From Canon to Obtaining the Red Galero Pietro Isvalies was born in Messina, Sicily in the middle of the fifteenth century to a poor family of Spanish origin3. His outstanding career started in his birthplace: at first he was a precentor of Messina, and then he became the vicar general of Archbishop Pietro de Luna4. Here he received his first benefices from Archbishop Luna, who appointed him as the provost of the Priory of Santa Croce of Messina and the com- 1 This article has been prepared in the MTA-PPKE Vilmos Fraknói Vatican Histor- ical Research Group. I. The Irish Franciscan college of St. Anthony at Louvain was granted a bull of foundation by Pope Paul V on 3 April 1607. This small house in what is now Leuven, Belgium, became one of the most intense centres of Irish engagement with Europe. Its history, both that of the friars who inhabited the college itself and that of the soldiers, diplomats and merchants who supported it, is also the story of Ireland’s decisive step into Europe. St. Anthony’s College owed both its foundation and location to Florence Conry a Franciscan friar and future archbishop of Tuam. Conry, a native of the townland of Figh part of the civil parish of Tibohine, barony of Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon, belonged to the learned family of the Uí Mhaoil Chonaire and had been trained in seanchas or traditional learning before leaving to study in Salamanca. He later entered the Franciscan order and, apart from a short return to Ireland as ‘confessor, adviser and favourite’ of Red Hugh O’Donnell just before the battle of Kinsale in 1601, spent his life in the Spanish dominions. The combination of Gaelic sensibility, Spanish courtiership, political astuteness and Latinate scholarship found in Conry helps explain the choice of Louvain as a novitiate-in-exile and house of studies for the Irish Franciscans. Founded in 1425, Louvain’s medieval university had developed into one of the intellectual powerhouses of Europe. Given its short distance from the border with the Protestant Netherlands the university had become one of the key centres of counter-reformation thought which, when combined with its proximity to the vast printing presses of Antwerp made it an ideal training ground for priests for the Irish mission.

  • Architectural Temperance: Spain and Rome, 1700-1759
Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Through the inclusion of previously unpublished documents and images that shed light on the theoretical debates which shaped eighteenth-century architecture in Rome and Madrid, Architectural Temperance provides an insight into readers with new insights into the cultural history of early modern Spain. Victor Deupi teaches the history of art and architecture at the School of Architecture and Design at the New York Institute of Technology and in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University. His research focuses on cultural politics in the early modern Ibero-American world. Routledge Research in Architecture The Routledge Research in Architecture series provides the reader with the latest scholarship in the field of architecture. The series publishes research from across the globe and covers areas as diverse as architectural history and theory, technology, digital architecture, structures, materials, details, design, monographs of architects, interior design and much more. By mak- ing these studies available to the worldwide academic community, the series aims to promote quality architectural research.

It is a divine gift of God, a means of touching the divine that only a relatively few people are given on this planet. It is very rare and precious, she is blessed to be one of the chosen ones.” American Record Guide “MAGIC FLUTE” Here is a “Magic Flute” from Turkey..........I am impressed; she is a master technician who also has great musicianship. The audience was thrilled by the technical excellence displayed by Kutluer; she has a delicate control of tone color.

  • Early Modern Manila and a Microstudy of Regional Globalisation
DISSERTATION Titel der Dissertation When Political Economies Meet: Spain, China and Japan in Manila, 1571‐1644 Verfasserin Mag. phil. Birgit Magdalena TREMML angestrebter akademischer Grad Doktorin der Philosophie (Dr. phil.) Wien, Juni 2012 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt: A 092 312 Dissertationsgebiet lt. Studienblatt: Geschichte Betreuerin / Betreuer: Univ. Prof. Dr. Peer Vries Acknowledgements Over the past five years, people often told me how lucky I was for being paid to pursue my passion. Although this shows that research in the humanities is regrettably considered nothing more than a pastime by many, I am also aware that I have been in a very privileged position. My employment at the Department of Social and Economic History at the University of Vienna enabled me to carry out truly global research in Europe, Asia and America, to teach in an inspiring global history program that had a profound impact on my work, and to be introduced into the academic community. Still, the present dissertation would have been impossible without the generous support of other organizations. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho), which financed my research as graduate student at the University of Tokyo in 2008/09, deserves special mentioning. I also received generous funding for archival research and participation in conferences from the Österreichische Gesellschaft für Wissenschaft (ÖFG), the Theodor Körner Fonds and the Newberry Library. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to my advisors Univ. Prof. Dr. Peer Vries and Ao. Prof. Mag. Dr. Friedrich Edelmayer, MAS, whose encouragement, expertise and support have accompanied me over the years.
