SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES, Inc. 2020 Annual Report RTUS T VI S E ITA VER a voice for independent higher education in south carolina Message From the Chair This annual report marks my first year as Chair of the Board of Trustees of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. Little did I know when I became chair last October that in a few months the world would face the onset of COVID-19. As you review this year’s annual report, you will see how our stakeholders came together to support our member institutions throughout this crisis. Independent higher education in South Carolina never wavered in equipping diverse, intelligent, and highly engaged students to become principled leaders in their professions and communities. While financial support is important every year, COVID-19 put unprecedented monetary pressures on students and their families. I would like to thank all our donors whose scholarships often made the difference that allowed students to remain enrolled. In particular I would like to thank the South Carolina Student Loan Corporation and the Council of Independent Colleges for generous new scholarship funding, and the Bailey Foundation for reaching the milestone of contributing scholarships through SCICU for 50 years. It has been my deepest honor to be associated with SCICU and its board of trustees for their dedication to assisting our campuses, enriching the lives of our students, and providing a bright future for all who call South Carolina home. Thank you all for your continued support of independent higher education in South Carolina. Jerry Cheatham Chair, SCICU Board of Trustees Staff VP of Finance, Industrial North America Sonoco Products Company 2 Message From the President As with so many organizations, our 2020 Annual Report is the “COVID-19 Edition.” Much of what we have done in the past months has been to support SCICU member institutions in responding to the myriad challenges posed by COVID-19. In the following pages you will read how our advocacy, fundraising, and programming were adapted to secure resources and assistance that provided campuses with the capacity to implement necessary precautions while providing the academic experience students and their families have come to expect. This spring, our campuses in a matter of weeks went from routine operations to finishing the semester with completely online academic programming. The summer was spent adapting space, revising schedules and syllabi, renovating facilities, and securing cleaning supplies in anticipation of a fall semester like no other. Thanks to their hard work, SCICU member institutions came through without major coronavirus outbreaks. SCICU tried hard to maintain “business as usual” but we were not always in a position to do so. While we held our annual SCICU Undergraduate Student/Faculty Research Symposium in February, our April major events, the annual Excellence in Teaching Dinner and Independent Colleges and Universities Day at the South Carolina Statehouse, were COVID-19 casualties. It saddened me not to honor in person the faculty members for their devotion to their students, and to be unable to see our Capitol through the eyes of student representatives. We should not, however, lose sight of how these ordeals brought us closer together. SCICU has been hosting frequent Zoom meetings for presidents and campus officers during which they provided each other with support and counsel. I developed personal relationships with campus leaders that otherwise would have taken years to nurture. I thank them all for the friendship and camaraderie they so freely offered. Of course, none of this would have been possible were it not for the dedication of the SCICU staff who all worked above and beyond the call of duty to make sure SCICU was doing everything it could for our member institutions. Their hard work and sacrifices are to be commended and are an inspiration to me. I hope to live up to the standards they set. Our mission is to strengthen South Carolina’s independent colleges and universities through collaboration, governmental advocacy, fundraising, and public engagement so that every student may choose, afford, and earn an L. Jeffrey Perez, Ph.D. SCICU President and CEO independent college education that fits their personal values, professional and social aspirations, and approach to learning. 3 Table of Contents Table SCICU 2019-2020 Annual Report Table of Contents Chair’s Letter.
