Bryan Thomas Run/Walk Handicap – e-timing

The Club has invested in an electronic timing sys- tem, aided by grants from the ACT government and AMA, in an effort to speed up the results processing and reduce the number of volunteers needed. The January Run/Walk hand- icap saw our equipment being trialled; however, we timed the events manually as well, as a precaution. There was a software error which made looking at the live results impos- sible but this error has since been rectified and the reconsti- tuted e-timing results were within a few seconds of the hand timing results. There were a few lessons learned in how we deal with new members on the day and those changing from their regular event or changing groups (there were 10 of these in January) and how we might keep participants from getting too close to the timing mat once they have their timing bibs on. Bunting will be placed around the timing tent and exclu- sion zone to minimise false ‘pings’ before the race. By completing the 2007 event she became the oldest woman, at more than 78 years-of-age, to have run our Half to that time. Gwen has enjoyed combining holidays and competition by partici- pating in Masters Games in places as far afield as Adelaide, Alice Springs, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and even New Zealand. She partici- pated in the W70 sprint events at the 2001 World Championships in Brisbane then as a W75 in the 2008 Oceania Championships in Towns- ville and as a W80 at both the 2009 World Masters Games in and at Oceania again in Tauranga, NZ in 2012. She has participated in the Gold Coast 10km Fun Run on twelve occasions for six age group victories. In December 2001 Gwen was presented with a Commonwealth Recognition Award for Senior Australians for the Fraser Electorate.
