The raw figures suggest that performance in the recent handicap is indeed down on previous outings although the comparatively small numbers (43-47 per event) and more par- ticularly the uncontrolled variations in the mix of starters muddy this analysis. To minimise the latter factor I looked at a smaller group who had run in all 3 events. Again a similar trend but statistical analysis (ANOVA) suggested less than a 5% chance that these apparent trends might be anything more than random scatter. Comments from our medal win- ners didn’t resolve the question either with some claiming the recent weather had effected them others not so! As an aside I noted that the standard deviation in age % was constant at 11% across all three events which both underlines the diversi- ty of performances within the club and reinforces the worth of the handicapping system as an incentive by keeping every- one’s chances of a victory alive .

Peter Kallio 3rd. As it was my 250th handicap, I was hoping to do well. I could have done better, the lungs were fine, but the legs were unresponsive to messages transmitted by the brain. The course is a good one for walkers, particular- ly the older ones like me – smooth surfaces mean less likeli- hood of stumbling or tripping. I particularly liked the slight downhill on the way back. I no longer compete seriously and have never been a “fast” walker. The handicaps are my once a month hit-out when I push myself a bit harder to see how I go against those more adept at the sport than myself. My object is to keep fit and I do this by walking about 6km most days (even the hot ones) and bushwalking regularly. I with- hold comment on the combined Frylink/Waddell handicapping system finding it difficult to reconcile how faster runners start earlier than walkers. Run/Walk Handicap Annual Awards for the 2019 season The Club conducts eleven monthly handicap events each year, from January to November, and a number of annual awards emanated from the best eight of those results for each participant in 2019. In 2020 this number will reduce to the best six results to better reflect a member’s inability to attend some events due to travel and/or injury or some other good reason. Some of these awards were presented at the November 2019 handicap event while the balance was held over until after the January 2020 event. Subject to a sub-committee discussion soon, it is proposed that all awards in future will again be presented at the November event. Members at that event are more relaxed with a glass of bubbly in hand and more time will have been allowed by them to stay and socialise afterwards. Reporter; Robert Kennelly 30/01/20 On a smokey warm night Margaret Taylor M70 cleared 1.1m (see pho- to left) finishing 10cm behind new member Lucy Kobier W35 with 1.2m. Mar- garet Taylor has an unbeatable lead in the Quentin Anthony Series. Five men competed with new comer Naum Angeloski M35 doing best with 1.35m, with evergreen Ken Smith M60 on 1.25. Quentin Anthony leader, Antoni Podolak M65 jumped 1.05. David Austin M45 took the sprint double with a 7.90 60m (to have him just behind John Lamb in the Boag Series) and a quick 25.14 200m. I understand that M55 Peter Baker has unofficially taken Robyn Whyte’s long standing 800m walk record with a time of 3.53. Damian Rutledge M50 was quickest at 800m run by 20 secs. Peter Brown’s (M55) second in the 800 trans- lated to a 100+sec win in the 3000m. John Lamb M70 pipped high Jump win- ner Naum Angeloski M35 by 12cm in the long jump. Lucy Kobier W35 doubled up on her high jump victory beating Margaret Taylor W70 in the long jump by 9cm. Peter Baker M55 was on fire on the first night back, not only with his walking but sent the spear out 31.93. Shenevelle Dickson W35 was best in the women’s section with 30.27. Jayne Hardy W55 had the best hammer of the competition with 35.95 and 31.11 by Steve Jordon M55 was best in the men. Albert Oliver M35 put the shot out to 11.50m, Shennevelle Dickson had the best women’s put with 9.17m 06/02 With Robbie Costmeyer in charge we all came out to a cool evening of athletics with the President’s Gifts the features of the night. Bryan Thomas reports in detail on this event on p.10, with pictures. Dave Austin M45 contin- ued to press his claims for the Boag Series with a 1:02.81 400m. Damian Rutledge M50 afrter a great opening night 800m took the honours in the 1500m with 5:05.81. Relative newcomer, Anne Moores W55 took the womens edition in 6:35.90. The 3000/5000m was an intriguing event Jennifer Bright W40 taking off with a quick time and putting 100m+ between herself and like- ly competitor Peter Brown M55. Peter gradually fought back taking the lead in the last kilometre and winning by 12 secs in 19:08.25. Both had age ratings of 80.6 and 80.4 respectively. The highlight of the night in the field was provided by Brian Kingston M65 not for his throw of the weight (11.85, see opposite) but the generous gift from him and his construction company of a theodolite for tak- ing measurements of the distance of our throwing implements. Brian a very big thankyou from the Club. (See back page) The long jump saw high jumper Michael Snare M45 take the best leap with 4.99m. Ralene Campbell W45 leapt 4.05m. The new cage for the weight throw was again in use, please see picture on back page. M50 Chris White has a spec- tacular throw of 16.85m (6cm short of Ricard Meiring’s M45 record). Alas Chris White is now in the age bracket where Grant Edwards holds the record at 18.84m! It is tempting to wonder whether the new weight cage has had some cathartic effect on our members who throw…..We had 14 throw the weight, 19 the discus and 23 the javelin. The numbers are nearly as good as for the monthly throw- ing handicap. Bob Banens M70 had the best throw in the discus 29.84, 68cm in front of Shenevelle Dickson’s best throw of 29.16. We welcome Alex Lloyd W60 back to the fray with a 22.09m discus placing her third in the women’s edition. She had an even better Javelin with 23.46 a metre and half behind Jayne Har- dy’s best throw of 24.92. Andrew Carter M55 threw a whopping 34.92 more than three metres in front of Steve Jordon’s 31.05. It is interesting to note that

Page 12 — March 2020 Vetrunner Welcome to our new Records Officer Jacob Grooby Distance runner, Jacob Grooby has formally started as the club’s Records Officer. One of our younger members at 33 years old, he has been with the club just 2 and a half years. However, Jacob has well and truly made his mark after winning the last year’s YMCA/AMA half marathon in May, ahead of fellow club members Bruce Graham in second place and Andrew Leigh (third Master home, and fourth overall (see pictures below).

Many thanks to Jayne Hardy and Suzie Gaynor who have been managing records since Nick Melhuish left the position last August. We have now caught up, and all record applications submitted since last August and up to the end of 2019 have been processed, and the verified records published to the ACTMA website.

With several records already broken this year, it’s a timely reminder to ensure you let the Meet Manager know if you think you might break a record. There are strict conditions that must be met for an athlete’s performance to be considered for a rec- ord and we need your help to ensure we have the right volunteers and equipment in place to support your record. We ask ath- letes to let the Meet Director know if they think they are likely to break a record. We have put together Guidelines for Athletes claiming a performance as a Track & Field Record to help explain what you need to do If an athlete’s run, walk, leap or throw looks like breaking a record, it is the athlete’s responsibility to complete the right pa- perwork, and get the signatures from officials before submitting the claim to the club’s records officer through the new, designat- ed email address: [email protected] Suzie Gaynor

DISTANCE: Clare Wall W65 (see bottom photo)

Clare had been a trailblazer in women marathon running in the late 1970s and early 80s. However, after having a family she returned to distance running in 2007 but 2019 was a real “purple patch”. She began her wonderful year by being second in her age group in the Canberra Marathon in 3:55.22 and a few months later was fourth in the Gold Coast Marathon in 3:58.10 – note both these major use ten year age groups so in Clare’s case it was W60 to 69. MOST OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE: Shaun Creighton M50

Prior to joining our club Shaun enjoyed a distinguished ca- reer as a world class middle distance runner participating in two World Championships, four Commonwealth and two Olympics Games. Shaun’s most outstanding performance during the year was breaking the Australian M50 marathon record. Shaun crossed the line of the Melbourne Marathon in 2:29.23 to break the M50 Australian Record of 2:30.52 that had been set by Peter Kallio in 1987. Shaun had been targeting the long-standing rec- ord since becoming a 50 year old. He narrowly missed it in the 2018 Perth Marathon, then in June 2019 he ran 2:30.22 in the Christchurch Marathon. However, as the course had been al- tered due to a storm Shaun was uncertain the record would be ratified so didn’t submit the paperwork. Thus the Melbourne Marathon became his focus and Shaun was ecstatic when he en- tered the MCG knowing he would get the 32 year old record at last. Shaun made his debut in the AMA Championships in Mel- bourne where he easily won the 10,000m event lapping every other runner.

In former years he was also a tal- ented sprinter, hurdler, jumper and pole-vaulter. Bob has won our Fristad Award three times and has also been once runner- up and third three times. He served four years on our club committee and was part of the AMA Board of Directors from 2001 to 2007 during which he co-edited five editions of the AMA Handbook.
