The History of the Minster School I. Introduction The present Southwell Minster School came into being in September 1976 as an 11-18, co- educational comprehensive. One of its "ancestors" was a grammar school, established in the Middle Ages. No precise date can be given to the grammar school's foundation. It was always a small school - on a number of occasions in danger of ceasing to exist. It did not develop a reputation for producing pupils who became household names, nor did it set any trends in education. Yet, through descent from the Grammar School, the Minster School is part of a line of development which may go back further than that represented by any other English school now outside the private sector. And, precisely because the Grammar School, and the other ancestors of the modern comprehensive, were not too much out of the ordinary, their story is the more important. II. The Grammar School 1. The Origins of the Grammar School The earliest schools were linked to a monastery, cathedral or other large church, such as the Minster at Southwell. Such "grammar" schools were at first very small - made up of perhaps less than twenty boys. Pupils probably started to attend between the ages of nine and twelve. Southwell's grammar school may have been created at the same time as its Minster - to provide education for Minster choristers. The Minster is thought to have been founded soon after the Saxon King Edwy gave lands in Southwell to Oscetel, Archbishop of York, in a charter dating from between 955 and 959. -

Exploring the changing dynamics of social class educational inequality throughout the history of state education in England: an analysis of four policy documents Ross Goldstone University of Cardiff, Cardiff, Wales, UK Abstract This article contributes a historically reflective critical exploration of the relationship between English state education and social class. In analysing selected historically significant policy documents, the article provides insights into the changing dynamics of social class educational inequality in England. Specifically, how across the life course of English education social class has been ‘washed out’ or ‘erased’ from policy documentation and either transmuted into different, sometimes unrelated, ideas or ignored altogether. Firstly, an introduction is locates the contemporary significance of social class to education in England. Thereafter, a section contextualises the history of education in England before the policy documents are analysed. These are: Report of the Schools Inquiry Commission (1868), Report of the Royal Commission on Secondary Education (1895), Secondary Education (1938), and Better Schools (1985). All four documents were not only written at times of policy significance and informed significant government policy but represent important trends in their own right. Through analysing these documents, it is clear how the presence of social class in official policy documents transitioned from unproblematically stated to ignored and ‘washed out’. In the final section, this pattern observed is assessed through broader dynamics taking place throughout the twentieth century. COMPARATIVE REFERENCE TO THE SECONDARY SCHOOL IN AMERICA AND THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN ENGLAND By Ali Ahmed All Madkour Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of London, Institute of Education 1979 Department of Comparative Education - 2 - ABSTRACT CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN THE GENERAL SECONDARY SCHOOL IN EGYPT SINCE 1952, WITH COMPARATIVE REFERENCE TO THE SECONDARY SCHOOL IN AMERICA AND THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN ENGLAND This study attempts to analyse curriculum development in the general secondary school in Egypt in its relation to the social, economic and political changes that have taken place since 1952. To accomplish this, an analysis of secondary school curricula in two other countries, namely America and England, which have been faced somewhat earlier than Egypt with some of Egypt's current problems, is carried out. Thus in their relation to the social, economic and political changes, the secondary school curricula in the three countries are judged. In addition, in order to understand the nature of these curricula and to characterise changes that have taken place over the period being examined, the major curriculum theories which have dominated educational practices in the world, are identified. Various socio-economic and political changes are associated with the process of modernisation and domecratisation. The effect of this kind of change on secondary school curricula in the three countries takes two forms; first, the need for schools to supply the labour market with skilled manpower flexible and adaptive to the rapidly changing needs of society; second, the need for curricula to provide opportunities for young people to learn the skills needed for making democratic decisions and for participating actively in their society's affairs. -

Although the 1944 Education Act made a free secondary education available to all up to the age of fifteen, it ‘recommended no particular form of secondary provision’. 2 However, ‘the Norwood Report of 1943 favoured tripartism’,3 a system based on the theory of three broad categories of children, with different types of minds, each requiring a particular type of education tailored to their aptitudes and intellectual 1 Norwood, C. -

Judith Everard March 2017 EDUCATION, c.1600–2000 Introduction The Royal Free Grammar School was founded in 1552 by and for the benefit of the townspeople and under its original statutes was to offer free places to the sons of burgesses. This obligation, long redundant due to the lapse of burgess status, was abolished in 1868, with most pupils historically coming from outside the borough.1 Small numbers of those admitted as freemen of the borough in this period were designated ‘schoolmaster’. The frankpledge list for 1668 contains two schoolmasters, and those for 1709 and 1731 name four each (from 1650 to 1775, no more than one ‘schoolmaster’ was admitted in each 25- year period).2 In 1690, Edward Griffiths, churchwarden of St Alkmund, was cited before the bishop’s court ‘for teaching school without license’.3 In fact, as befitted the county town, Shrewsbury had a whole range of schools and educational provision before the 17th century, most of it informal and hard to trace in the records; the first systematic census dates from 1817.4 But there was a developing range of endowed schools which offered education to the sons and daughters of townspeople. This chapter commences with a brief account of the private educational provision from the 17th century before returning to the education of ‘the poor’ and the population at large. Private Schools By the late 17th century there was at least one well regarded private school for girls: a finishing school run by Esther Chambre and Barbery Saxfield ‘in the more fashionable part of Castle Ward near St Mary’s Church’. -

The public schools also became deeply involved with freemasonry,a secret fraternal society. English Further Education Policy up to 1993: the changing roles of central and local government and local Further Education consequences A B Webster MPhil 2012 English Further Education Policy up to 1993: the changing roles of central and local government and local Further Education consequences A B Webster A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the University‟s requirements for the Degree of Master of Philosophy 2012 Coventry University in association with the University of Worcester ABSTRACT Local authorities were involved in Further Education (FE) from 1889 to 1993, but it was not until 1944 that LEAs were obliged to provide facilities for FE. This study considered economic, political and social factors when examining changes in the roles of central and local government and other policy changes. Such factors included national economic policies, recessions, two World Wars, and changes in dominant political views. Policy changes and local implementation were examined by analysing contemporary national and local documents. The Local Education Authority (LEA) chosen for investigation in this study was Worcestershire which, after the reorganisation of local government in 1974, joined Herefordshire and the County Borough of Worcester to become the County of Hereford and Worcester. The Worcestershire FE College selected was Redditch College, which merged with North Worcestershire College in 1988 to form North East Worcestershire College. Changes in the relationship between central and local government were brought about by legislation and from 1964 by the introduction of agencies, such as the Manpower Services Commission. These agencies were established as one way of increasing the number of skilled workers. However, they also reduced the LEAs‟ control of FE, because they had to approve some FE college courses and provided funding. -

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLMASTERS IN ENGLAND AND WALES, 1891-1951, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THE WORK OF THE ASSISTANT MASTERS ASSOCIATION. by GE01-1-REY WALKER Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Education, University of London Institute of Education. 1995 Abstract This thesis examines to what extent and by what means the Assistant Masters Association (AMA) was able to influence provision in relation to conditions of service for the secondary schoolmaster in England and Wales in the 60-year period from the AMA's foundation in 1891. A thematic approach is adopted with chapters devoted to the specific issues of tenure, salaries, superannuation, registration and training. Within each chapter there is a necessary concentration on the earlier period of the AMA's history when the impetus to create acceptable conditions of service was at its most imperative. The thesis draws upon much previously unused material from the Assistant Masters Archive, lodged at the University of London Institute of Education Library. The study builds upon and extends the earlier research of Baron, Tropp and Gosden, and provides an alternative interpretation to the more recent work of Lawn, Ozga, Grace, and others, which presents the behaviour of organized teachers in terms of employer- employee conflict. The strike, confrontational stratagem and the coercion of its membership are seen as alien to the AMA's philosophy. The AMA's participation with Joint Four, and its interaction with other teacher unions, are fully explored. The significant contribution of the AMA to enhanced provision across the spectrum of teacher employment is shown to be primarily the result of the Association's persistent, professional dialogue with government - both central and local - via carefully researched data and targeted argument.
