The officer added that the move to buy simulators will also mean that the recurring expenses incurred in teach- ing the staff how to drive, will be done away with. ‘‘Last year, more than Rs 20 lakh was spent on making the staff learn driving. This will involve just a one-time expendi- ture,’’ said Paul. According to police officers, most of the recruits don’t know how to drive and these simulators will come to them as a boon. ‘‘Many of them come from a rural back- ground and don’t know how to drive. Incidents of dam- ages being caused to police vehicles while training re- cruits, are common. This will help prevent that,’’ said a senior police officer. ‘‘Many a time police personnel are dependent on driv- ers for their movement. Now with the simulators, more and more staff will be encouraged to learn driving,’’ added the officer. Most of the Police Control Room (PCR) staff are de- pendent on a professional driver which can be dangerous in case of an emergency.‘‘What if the driver is injured in a shootout? The constable or the assistant sub inspector (ASI) must be able to take over,’’ said the principal of the police training college, A A Farooqui. During interrogation, Kumar disclosed that he used get these documents attested by Chandra. He al- legedly charged around Rs 1,000 for each attestation. ‘‘He had links with the staff of SDM offices at various places, who charged be- tween Rs 2,500 to Rs 6,500 for preparing fake caste or domicile certificates,’’ added Luthra. Police said Chandra came to know a lawyer and started attesting marriage certificates for a fee. ‘‘He gradually became fa- miliar with other advocates and touts and started to at- test forged documents,’’ stated Luthra.

PTI Another mission to save heritage By Akshaya Mukul TIMES NEWS NETWORK New Delhi: The culture ministry is in the process of launching a mission to conserve the country’s ‘intangible heritage’ by devel- oping a national policy and an over-arching legislative framework. This mission will be similar to the much hyped National Manuscript Mission which is yet to gain momentum. In common man’s parlance, it is about conserving the country’s folklore, mytholo- gy, rituals, music, dance and such oral traditions. Globalisation might be the government’s mantra but the mission document deplores the ‘‘negative impact of the overpowering multinational business interests at the local and national level’’, resulting in traditions and arts becoming commodities. Officials say the mission document will soon be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval and the project will start with- in two to three months. The rationale for the mission: ‘‘Urgent need to rediscover the past and integrate it with the present, in an attempt to revive that perennial stream of its heritage for contemporary India.’’ Why? One official explains: ‘‘On the one hand, modern society has created a market- driven, consumerist, mixed culture, and on the other, it has also become subject to distortion, decontextualisation and dilution.’’ This has led to erosion of the oral and guru-shishya tradition and mindless imita- tion of western ideals. The mission would endeavour to raise awareness regarding the value of heritage and carry out extensive documentation of intangible heritage. Each expression of her- itage will be preserved by making exhaus- tive inventories and storing them electroni- cally for the future. The inventory would have a three-tier list- ing: A comprehensive national inventory of India’s cultural assets, with basic categories and sub-categories; lists of cultural expressions in need of urgent safeguarding; and lists of treasures of intangible For advertising details, call: Ravi Popli at 9818115161 or E-mail: [email protected] cultural heritage.
