10:30 INDEPENDENT LENS “Dolores” press conference (Huntington)

Dolores Huerta, an important, yet largely unknown civil rights activist, was an equal partner in cofounding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez. Her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Huerta tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, became one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century, and, at 87, she continues the fight to this day. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother of 11, “Dolores” reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. Premieres March 27

A haven for black intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries — and a path of promise toward the American dream — HBCUs have educated the architects of freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field, while remaining unapologetically black for more than 150 years. From the earliest attempts of slaves to gain an education to today’s campuses, the film examines the incalculable impact that HBCUs have had on American history, culture and national identity. 2:30 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE “The Gilded Age” press conference (Huntington)

Thirty years after the Civil War, America had transformed itself into an economic powerhouse. But the transformation had created stark new divides in wealth, class and opportunity. The simultaneous rise of a lavishly wealthy one percent and a struggling working class sparked passionate and violent debate over questions still being asked today: How is wealth best distributed, and by what process? Should the government concern itself with economic growth or economic justice? Are we two nations — one for

Nearly six decades later her acclaimed, groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun remains a beloved theatrical jewel, but the fascinating story of its author is not widely known. Filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain explores the life and work of this passionate writer and civil rights advocate, with narration by actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson, the voice of Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose as Lorraine Hansberry, as well as interviews with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte, and Louis Gossett, Jr. The documentary is part of AMERICAN MASTERS’ year-long online campaign Inspiring Woman. AMERICAN MASTERS “BOMBSHELL: The Hedy Lamarr Story” press conference (Huntington)

Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (Ziegfeld Girl, Samson and Delilah) was known as the world’s most beautiful woman. Her looks overshadowed Lamarr’s true legacy as a technological trailblazer in communication systems. She never publicly talked about her life as an inventor so her family thought her story died when she did. But in 2016, debut director Alexandra Dean and producer Adam Haggiag discovered four never-before-heard audio tapes of Lamarr speaking on the record about her incredible life. Combining this newly discovered interview with intimate reflections from her children, closest friends, family and admirers, including Mel Brooks and Robert Osborne, “Bombshell” finally gives Hedy Lamarr the chance to tell her own story. On an unlucky day 13,000 years ago, a slightly built, malnourished teenager missed her footing and tumbled to the bottom of a 100-foot pit deep inside a cave in Mexico’s Yucatan. Rising seas flooded the cave and, until recently, cut it off from the outside world. Then a team of divers chanced upon her nearly complete and astonishingly well- preserved skeleton alongside fossils of extinct Ice Age beasts such as giant sloths and saber-tooth tigers. Now, NOVA takes you on a spectacular and risky underwater expedition to recover her bones and explores one of science’s most controversial riddles: the origins of the First Americans. 2:40 THE RISE AND FALL OF THE BROWN BUFFALO press conference (Huntington)

This is a fresh and genre-defying film about the life of radical Chicano lawyer, author and countercultural icon Oscar Zeta Acosta — the basis for the character Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, written by legendary journalist-provocateur Hunter S. Thompson. Acosta’s powerful literary voice, brash courtroom style and notorious revolutionary antics made him a revered figure within the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 70s. Phillip Rodriguez brings Acosta to life by employing a cinematic style as unorthodox as his subject: weaving archival footage and images with dramatized

3:45 THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT, A SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF AMERICAN EXPERIENCE press conference (Huntington)

On May 6, 1882 on the eve of the greatest wave of immigration in American history, President Chester A. Arthur signed into law an extraordinary piece of federal legislation. Called the Chinese Exclusion Act, it singled out as never before a specific race and nationality for exclusion making it illegal for Chinese workers to come to America and for Chinese nationals already here ever to become citizens of the United States. This two-hour film explores the origin, history and impact of this little-known, yet deeply resonant and revealing episode about immigration and national identity, civil rights and how we define who can be an American. Directed by Ric Burns and Li-Shin Yu. Narrated by Hoon Lee and featuring the voices of Russell Wong, Fenton Lee, Yuet-Fung Ho and Josh Hamilton. Premieres May 29
