Lucie Podroužková, Ph.D. Brno 2019 Abstract This final thesis focuses on the feminist and socio-cultural interpretation of three of the most controversial aspects of female body; menstruation, hairy female body, and vagina. Through poems in collection milk and honey written by the Indian-born Canadian author, Rupi Kaur and critical sources the thesis reflects past and recent discussions addressed to these topics. Moreover, this thesis argues that Rupi Kaur addresses the castigated functions of female body showing openly how the modern world perceives contemporary women who struggle with self-acceptance. The theoretical part shortly introduces the author and her collection while the analytical part focuses on studies of perception of menstruation, female body hair, and female genitals in Rupi Kaur’s poems supported by the secondary readings. Finally, this thesis presents the importance of the role of female artists and their view of female genitals.     Coloniality of knowledge and Torture: Representations of the Self and Other in Torture Museums in Germany Beatriz Junqueira Lage Carbone1 Abstract: Reports about the use of torture in some Latin American countries have been studied by scholars of human rights, as well as activists who, especially since the 1970s, seek to draw attention to the employment of torture2, in both the Global North and Global South. Newspaper articles, TV documentaries, Internet content produced by NGOs, and even first-hand contact with activists from Latin America compete in supplying the imagination of European people with images on this matter. The field of memory and history of torture and cruel punishment is not free from the epistemic divisions that characterize the issue. In some museums dedicated to the theme of medieval torture in Germany, torture (as part of the legal systems and Inquisition in Europe during the Middle Ages and early modernity) is brought into context with violations perpetrated in the recent past in Latin America. This is done either through the association of medieval torture devices to human rights abuses perpetrated by the police in Latin America and in other parts of the Global South; as well as by bringing together a small campaign of Amnesty international against human rights violations in the Global South as part of an exhibition showcasing torture in the Middle Ages. This place, with its delicate and precarious equilibrium, its confusion of languages, races and smells, would in normal circumstances have been a nightmare for someone like Stokar, whose political beliefs were in total harmony with his initials: SS. But it was a nightmare he was forced to inhabit, adapting to new rules and living in a reality that he would once have spurned. So as to remain in safety, Sergio becomes the ‘sheriff of the Zattere’. He maintains order and investigates small crimes. And then one day he’s assigned a special mission by the Council that rules over the complex. Some of the Zattere girls have been killed in a brutal fashion: there’s a murderer lurking somewhere and only a skilled policeman like Stokar can track him down, thanks partly to his intuition and his contacts, but mostly because he’s as stubborn as a steamroller.

By far the most commonly accessed emergency contraceptive, levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception (LNG- EC) features in the essential medicines list (EML) of 62 countries, out of a total of 118 countries with publicly available EMLs. LNG-EC is a safe and effective way of preventing an unintended pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse has occurred. The current consensus is that LNG-EC works primarily through the suppression of ovulation and thus prevents the fusion of sperm and ovum (fertilisation). It is unlikely that LNG-EC acts after fertilisation and it cannot harm an established pregnancy. However, the information presented to the public frequently implies that LNG-EC can impair the implantation process, wherein a blastocyst attaches to the wall of the uterus. This post-fertilisation action is morally unacceptable to many. My work concerns how the language used to describe how LNG-EC prevents a pregnancy effects attitudes towards the medication. There are prevalent misconceptions of how the medication acts and the effect that access to LNG-EC has on sexual behaviour, such as that it may harm an early embryo or that access to the medication encourages riskier sexual practices.

Using four examples of Australian and Canadian “sentient house” literature – Joan Lindsay’s Picnic at Hanging Rock, Vivienne Cleven’s Her Sister’s Eye, Daniel David Moses’ Big Buck City, and Andrew Pyper’s The Guardians – the research dissertation examines the ways in which Australian and Canadian writers have “renovated” the Euro-American sentient house genre within their respective national contexts. For example, writers such as Pyper and Cleven import the Euro-American trope of the “haunted castle” into their work, but challenge the normative assumptions associated with race and/or gender inherent in most Euro-American gothic horror narratives.     Roger Epp Board Room Dispersal distance and age/sex structure of purple martins (Progne subis) in central Alberta Purple martins (Progne subis) are neotropical migrants, and while we know where they move during their Carolyn Cook migration, we don’t know a lot about their dispersal habits. It is important for the continued support of purple Dr. Glen martin landlord communities and species conservation to understand how and why martins disperse on the northern edge of their range. This study aims to determine if the age or sex of a martin determines how far they 9:00 - Hvenegaard disperse. Datasets collected during the summers of 2017 and 2018 in central Alberta were analyzed and compared 9:30 am AUENV 401 to historical records of the eastern population of martins in Canada. The results show that there is no statistical significance between dispersal distances and either age or sex. Descriptive statistics do suggest that male birds disperse further, which is supported by other studies. As populations of aerial insectivores decline it will become all the more important to know how martin dispersal behavior will change through our manipulation of their environment. Valuing Augustana's Urban Forest With the growing population of urban areas in Canada, urban forests play a vital role in the health of the environment. These roles include reducing energy usage, intercepting stormwater, providing wildlife habitat, and removing air pollution including carbon. They also have the Julie Ostrem potential to connect people with nature in the midst of an urban life. The University of Alberta Augustana Campus, located in Camrose, contains a large amount of greenspace including a growing urban forest that provides many of the benefits listed above.
