Taylor, Chair Awaiting Middle Ground contributes to Black feminist scholarship with respect to the medicalization of disability, gender, and sexuality in American biomedical and literary discourse. By shifting Disability Studies and African American Studies’ attention to sexology archives in the post-World War II era, this project provides a historiography of intersexuality as a racial project that resonates in the contemporary moment. Following the intersex protocols put into motion by sexologist Dr. John Money, I argue that Dr. Money championed patients’ narratives that disavowed embodied difference. Essentially, patients’ bodies and behaviors were medicalized and regulated toward whiteness, able-bodiedness and able-mindedness, and heterosexuality, and away from Black, disabled, and intersex difference. Simultaneously, I examine intersex representations and disability metaphors in fiction, including Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex (2002) and Alexis De Veaux’s Yabo (2014). I contend that the novels are intersex counternarratives to those produced within American biomedicine in the post-WWII era. I utilize historian Miriam Reumann’s notion of “American sexual character” to argue that dimorphic genitals and gender normativity were aspects of an American reinvestment in sexual and racial morality and able-bodiedness and able-mindedness in the face of foreign and domestic adversaries. I attend to the interrelated archives, pathological representations, intersectionality, and alliances between Black, intersex, and disabled people and fictional characters, by joining in on the conversations in Critical Intersex Studies from scholars David A. Rubin, Morgan Holmes, and Hilary Malatino; in Disability and Crip Studies from Robert McRuer and Alison Kafer; and in Black feminist disability studies from Moya Bailey and Sami Schalk. 2 This interdisciplinary project draws from American medical archives, the history of science and medicine, queer theory, Black feminisms and Feminist Science Studies, and African American literary criticism to offer another interlaced genealogy of Blackness and disability. God Made Me like this, Doctor,” said this young Negro who had been reared as a girl until medically investigated at the age of fifteen. (Hermaphroditism 117) Intersex narratives froM the post-World War II era postulated intersexuality as a type of stucki position in need of medical intervention. As America underwent domestic racial and sexual renovations, advancements in surgical techniques made intersex people claiMable doMain for Moral, social, and racial resignification. However, not all patients’ bodies were malleableii and not all flesh could overturn God’s determination. Black patients, like the patient in the epigraph, were inconsequential and irredeeMable under norMative intersex protocols (“Spectacles and Scholarship” 773-778). Black patients’ anatoMies, mired in racist tropes that configured theM as enlarged, elongated, invasive, and dangerous, were unchangeable regardless of the amount of intersex management and recontouring.iii Beyond the generalized disability metaphors present in Medical articles such as “unsightly tissue” or “disfiguring and embarrassing” appendagesiv (or lack thereof), intersex patients with actual disabilities faced further stigMatization. Disabilities, including mental distress,v cognitive or intellectual iMpairMents, and physical disabilities lessened patients’ chances at social, Moral, and sexual redeMption. Black disabled patients, caught in the loop of unfitness, were narrativized by physicians as intrinsically less Moldable. Thus, in practice, the Black patient’s exclamation of “I can’t help it” received a resounding response of ‘we can’t (fully) help you.’ Intersex ManageMent was fixated on white Mobility and white recuperation that was made possible through a continued investMent in racial and sexual diMorphism and separation. This dissertation explores the Middle and the future of Blackness, disability, and intersex as patients’ bodies have been collected, forgotten, and even empowered within medical archives, literature, feMinist genealogies, and interdisciplinary forMations. Disorders of sex development (DSD), referred to in this dissertation as intersex, are the primary focus within Awaiting Middle Ground.vi I argue that intersexualization, or “the processes of pathologization that goes hand in hand with the construction of intersexuality” (Eckert qtd. in Wilkerson 188), had historically restored the capacity of whiteness to forMerly aMbiguous intersex patients in the United States. I also contend that the intersex body resided on the outskirts of (full)white identification. Thus, off-whiteness,vii which is defined as “ethnicity, poverty, and gendered conceptions of a lack of Moral character” (Stubblefield 162), is an attributable label to white intersex outsiderness and an interlocutor to iv Blackness and disability. Intersex and gender nonnorMative bodies presented a fundaMental affront to ideologies and MechanisMs of biopolitical control mastered by medical professionals in post-WWII AMerica. The ideologies and mechanisMs of control were meant to correct, realign, and make invisible and make passable the afflicted white intersex bodies. In contrast, Awaiting Middle Ground pauses uncomfortably and disruptively where Blackness, sex difference, and disability converged in medical archives and within literary fiction. I contend that it is only through a thorough exaMination of racialization and debilitation in intersex management that we will begin to understand the convergent metaphors and material vulnerabilities

Parents and children are misinformed, kept in the dark, sworn to secrecy, kept isolated and denied appropriate support. What’s worse, IGM is explicitly permitted under Section 268 (3) (a) of the Canadian Criminal Code. Canada is thus in breach of its obligations under CRC to (a) take effective legislative, administrative, judicial or other measures to prevent harmful practices on intersex children causing severe mental and physical pain and suffering of the persons concerned, and (b) ensure access to redress and justice, including fair and adequate compensation and as full as possible rehabilitation for victims, as stipulated in CRC art. 24 para. 3 in conjunction with the CRC-CEDAW Joint general comment No. 18/31 “on harmful practices”. This Committee has consistently recognised IGM practices to constitute a harmful practice under the Convention in Concluding Observations. In total, UN treaty bodies CRC, CEDAW, CAT, CCPR and CRPD have so far issued 49 Concluding Observations recognising IGM as a serious violation of non-derogable human rights, typically obliging State parties to enact legislation to (a) end the practice and (b) ensure redress and compensation, plus (c) access to free counselling.

It’s been edited just a bit for length. Talila “TL” Lewis has been named a White House Champion of Change and was also named one of the Top 30 Thinkers Under 30 by Pacific Standard in 2015. Talila is an attorney-organizer and visiting professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and National Technical Institute for the Deaf who founded and works with the all-volunteer organization HEARD, which stands for Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf communities. HEARD focuses on correcting and preventing deaf wrongful convictions, ending abuse of incarcerated people with disabilities; decreasing recidivism rates for deaf returned citizens; and increasing representation of deaf people in professions that can counter mass incarceration and end the attendant school to prison pipeline. Talila created the only national database of deaf incarcerated individuals. This is something the jails and prisons aren’t tracking themselves. Talila also maintains contact with hundreds of deaf incarcerated individuals. TL also leads intersectional campaigns that advance the rights of multiply-marginalized people, including the #DeafInPrison Campaign, the Deaf Prisoner Phone Justice Campaign, and the American Civil Liberties Union’s “Know Your Deaf Rights” Campaign.     ffff Attitudes towards individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing Introduction For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), negative attitudes from DHH and hearing individuals can serve as a barrier to healthy social and emotional development22, social integration17, and academic and career success 19. Societal attitudes toward individuals who are deaf is an important research topic because: Attitudes toward DHH individuals are critical aspects of integration into social and academic activities.23 Knowledge of attitudes toward individuals who are DHH contributes to understanding and positive interactions between hearing and DHH individuals.15 What does the research tell us about attitudes toward people who are DHH? Researchers have assessed attitudes toward individuals with disabilities, as well as deaf individuals specifically.     1. Introduction ‘Intersex’ has always been a contested category, and hence providing a definition of the term and the concept is a challenging task. Intersex activist Michelle O’Brien contends that when speaking or writing about intersex, “the first thing that has to be understood is that the definition of intersex has changed and has become increasingly policed by people with medical, activist and academic careers” (O’Brien 2009). Morgan Holmes, intersex activist and scholar, likewise argues that “intersex is not one but many sites of contested being [that] is hailed by specific and competing interests, and is a sign constantly under erasure, whose significance always carries the trace of an agenda from somewhere else” (Holmes 2009: 2). The shifting processes of signification and resignification of ‘intersex’ that have occurred throughout the centuries, but most considerably in the last two decades, need to be taken into account and are indispensable for an adequate understanding of intersex. Yet in order for intersex individuals and (an) intersex collective(s) to become recognizable, to be socioculturally acknowledged, and to act as a political agent, intersex organizations have developed a working definition of intersex. The Organization Intersex International (OII)1 provides the following definition that is currently in use and widely accepted by global intersex activists, NGOs, and generally by other medical and political agents involved in intersex debates (although their own respective definitions of intersex may differ): “Intersex people are born with physical, hormonal or genetic features that are neither wholly female nor wholly male; or a combination of female and male; or neither female nor male” (OII Australia 2013).2 Implied in this definition is the acknowledgment that various forms of intersex exist, hence intersex is to be understood as comprising a spectrum of 1 The Organization Intersex International (OII) is currently the largest global network of intersex organizations with branches in a dozen countries on five continents.

    The 519’s Equity Glossary of Terms The 519 celebrates diversity, values principles of inclusion, and works within an anti-oppression social justice framework. As part of this work, we have compiled an introduction to language we currently use to affirm the identities and experiences of diverse LGBTQ people and to provide a basic understanding of language describing many forms of power, privilege and discrimination. Being an ally involves listening for and using language that individuals and groups indicate are respectful. Some of these words are intended to raise awareness about how groups of people are valued and/or managed by society, and to unlearn our own assumptions and biases. This language is also about finding ways to describe and imagine freedom and equity for ourselves and others. It is important to acknowledge the cultural lenses that shape this particular definitions list: an English- speaking, urban, Canadian community centre serving diverse populations. Language constantly evolves within LGBTQ communities, both locally and abroad, so please use this glossary as a guide. Individuals may use different words to describe themselves or use the terms in a slightly different way than they are described here. Differences may be seen across generations or regions. 1 Over-arching Anti-Oppression and Equity Terms Accommodation: An adjustment made to policies, programs and practices to enable individuals to benefit from and participate in the provision of services equally and perform to the best of their ability. Morgan Holmes This paper is concerned with the limits of oppositional thinking about the construction of sexed subjects, and with the challenge of relaying knowledge about divergent sex/gender systems to scholars and readers who may never have the opportunity to see for themselves how different cultures operate. [1] Fieldwork, for most anthropology students, at least until doctoral candidacy, is prohibitively expensive; undergraduates in particular must rely on texts about 'regions of sexuality' other than their own. The paper argues that much of the existing work on cultural systems that incorporate a 'third sex' portray simplistic visions in which societies with more than two sex/gender categories are cast as superior to those that divide the world into just two. I argue that to understand whether a system is more or less oppressive than another we have to understand how it treats its various members, not only its 'thirds'. Glossing over that information impoverishes the information to which scholars unable to (re)visit specific sociocultural locations have access. While careful anthropology clearly attempts to avoid dichotomous and superficial thinking, there are abuses of anthropological methods and data that we ignore at our peril. Such abuses include asking anthropology to answer for us why we are the way we are, whomever we may be. Lest my concern about this seem to come entirely out of the blue, I should give readers a sense of how I arrived at this observation. In the mid-1990's I 'came out' as an intersexed activist, and—as a graduate student in studies that bridged fields of inquiry in sociology and anthropology—was intrigued by the idea that some of my colleagues in the Intersex Movement put forward: Western culture and medical practice would do well to learn from cultures that had sex categories allowing the recognition of intersex states.

    Audism Audism (from Latin audire, to hear, and -ism, a system of practice, behavior, belief, or attitude) has been variously defined as: The notion that one is superior based on one's ability to hear or behave in the manner of one who hears. (Humphries 1977:12) ...the belief that life without hearing is futile and miserable, that hearing loss is a tragedy and "the scourge of mankind," and that deaf people should struggle to be as much like hearing people as possible. Deaf activists Heidi Reed and Hartmut Teuber at D.E.A.F. Inc., a community service and advocacy organization in Boston, consider audism to be "a special case of ableism." Audists, hearing or deaf, shun Deaf culture and the use of sign language, and have what Reed and Teuber describe as "an obsession with the use of residual hearing, speech, and lip-reading by deaf people." (Humphrey and Alcorn 1995: 85) ...the corporate institution for dealing with deaf people, dealing with them by making statements about them, authorizing views of them, describing them, teaching about them, governing where they go to school and, in some cases, where they live; in short, audism is the hearing way of dominating, restructuring, and exercising authority over the deaf community. It includes such professional people as administrators of schools for deaf children and of training programs for deaf adults, interpreters, and some audiologists, speech therapists, otologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, librarians, researchers, social workers, and hearing aid specialists.
