FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH For the beauty of the Earth, For the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies: For the wonder of each hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon, and stars of light: For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child; Friends on earth, and friends above; For all gentle thoughts and mild: For Thy church that evermore Lifteth holy hands above, Off’ring up on every shore Her pure sacrifice of love: For Thyself, best Gift Divine! To our race so freely given; For that great, great love of Thine, Peace on earth, and joy in heaven: Lord of all, to Thee we raise This our hymn of grateful praise. Amen. Folliott S. ONLY A WORD A word is such a potent thing; A careless word may break a heart; A bitter word may burn and sting; A word can rip a home apart. And yet a word can comfort bring. A word can wound, a word can mend; Can lift the broken; lighten eyes, A word can heal, a word can send The soul a touch of paradise. A gentle word may win a friend. So; Lord of Words, please grant to me The speech that spreads tranquility. Lois Elizabeth Ridenour Selected GOD WORKING THROUGH GODLY WOMEN 3 Editorial

You say the manna no longer falls, the sweetness is gone, and you Must strive to nourish the inner life, and the blessings you feel are few, But brother, remember the manna fell in the wilderness of our need; God sends exactly what we require, so now it‘s not manna, but seed! We‘ve entered the land of plenty; the territory of grace, Behind lies the desert of sin, and now… it‘s fields and foes that we face. When the fruit on the tree needs picking, why gripe that no manna falls? Why cry that our garments are wearing thin when the flax is standing tall? Why look at the foe and yearn all day for the sage and the sifting sand? Is not God providing His power and might, and a sword in each able hand? Never look back, my brother! Remember the heat and the thirst? Remember the aimless wandering in the desert that we traversed? Pick up your weapon, brother! Don‘t yearn for the manna again. Look up! We‘ve arrived! and Canaan needs courage, and muscles, and men!

HOME HYGIENE FOR MOTHERS Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 Be saturated with God’s Word. I cannot teach something I do not know myself. Do I rise up early enough to offer up the first fruits to the Lord so that I can gather strength for my day? (Psalm 138:3) Or do I wait until I fall into bed exhausted at night to read a short chap- ter that I end up drifting off to sleep midway through? Am I daily, hourly, (sometimes every minute) laying down all of my burdens at the foot of the Cross, so that I am able to help bear the concerns of my children? Or do I carry the weight of my anxieties around all day with a long face, being stressed out and unable to show joy? Am I daily praying for each child by name? For their needs, their special challenges…realizing that I don‘t have to deal with these problems alone? Do I realize that each one is unique and no two can be dealt with exactly the same? However, each one desper- ately needs encouragement, every day! Try to tuck them into bed each night with words of encouragement and tell them something you appreciated about them that day. If there is not peace in my soul, I cannot expect to have a peaceful household. One person can set the tone for the whole day by their mood and attitude. Do I love my husband 100%? Greeting him when he comes home from work? Showing how to love unselfishly, thereby giving our chil- dren security and a Biblical example of what God intended a mar- riage to be. How do I spend my time? Do I frequently engage in ―time stealers‖ such as the internet, fiction books, magazines, lengthy telephone calls, being gone from home ―just to get out‖? Idleness truly is the devil‘s workshop. I will have to answer to God for how I spend my time! Am I teaching my children how to care for their bodies? With good hygiene and good manners? Confirming that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. (I Corinthians 6:19) Am I truly building a relationship with them? Or do we simply exist in the same household, ―sharing space‖? Am I trying to reach their hearts, looking in their eyes when they speak, seeking to un- derstand their needs, and trying to say ―yes‖ whenever possible. Do I try to remember what it‘s like to be their age? Do I grow weary of discipline? …thinking I‘m too tired or I‘ll sim- ply wait until my husband gets home to handle this ―big issue‖? 18 The Testimony May, 2011 Thus, losing the reward of reconciliation and missing those delight- ful, teachable moments. (Proverbs 13:24) Do I repeatedly ignore their needs in order to help someone else? ―Deserting my very own greatest mission field‖ as one minister recently suggested. Do I encourage them to be all that God designed them to be? Challenging them to be in God‘s Word and to make wise decisions on their own? Do I imply that it’s ok, even desirable, for them to see me with- out answers, or falling on my face in prayer to seek God’s wis- dom? Do I speak of others in an unkind way? …or talk about other people‘s problems…teaching them to ―gossip and be busy-bodies‖… Or could I better ―open my mouth with wisdom, and on my tongue have the law of kindness‖? (Proverbs 31:26) Am I joyfully showing them by example that all of the house- work and daily chores are to be done for the Lord? ―And what- soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord…‖ (Colossians 3:23) Do I remind them daily that they are created in God’s image, …that Jesus died for them, and how much they are loved by God and by their parents? Am I thankful for all of the wonderful, Godly mentors that God has placed in our children’s lives every day? All of those precious friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents, teachers and neighbors…letting them know how much they mean to our children and encouraging positive interaction between the two. Am I humble enough to accept help when it is offered? …showing my children God‘s design—that one person has to receive the bless- ing in order for another to give? How often am I spontaneous, fun, and occasionally “off-the- wall”? My dear aunt once reminded me that while proper training and good habits are essential and critical in child-raising…when your children are grown, they are going to have the fondest memo- ries of all those ―crazy times‖ together. A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance… Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine…Proverbs 17:22 Are we training our sons to be honorable and truthful in all things, and how to love and cherish their mother and sisters? …and instructing our daughters about doing good and not evil to others (Proverbs 31:12) and how to respect their father and brothers? Teaching both our sons and daughters about obeying and honoring their parents. (Ephesians 6:1, Colossians 3:20, Exodus 20:12) How about the way we treat our own parents and spouses? Remem- bering there are many times when ―more is caught than taught.‖ QUESTIONS TO PONDER 19

Do I cherish every moment spent with my entire family? Do I try to comprehend that each day is a gift from God? Don‘t wait until to- morrow to do or say that special something you have been wanting to. Do I apologize for my own wrongs and inconsistencies, show- ing meekness and repentance? Or do I portray hypocrisy by the attitude that ―I don‘t make mistakes‖? Do I allow half-done, lazy work from my children because I am tired of repeating the same instructions over and over? Can I improve the witness of patient persistence and train in the beauty of a job done right— by going alongside them and helping them do the job properly? Do we train in giving guests our unselfish best? Yet demon- strate how to open ourselves and our homes in a split second, extend- ing Christian love and offering soul refreshment to others in the true meaning of hospitality. All children are seeking love, approval, acceptance and recognition…they do so by mimicking and following the examples they see in adults and people that they admire. ―Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.‖ 1 Timothy 4:12 Don‘t be overwhelmed! We are spending our days building character in the souls that God has placed in our care. Jocelyn Root

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW Jerilyn Schaurer Somewhere over the rainbow, Way up high! There‘s a place that we hope to dwell, far beyond the sky. Somewhere over the rainbow, Skies are blue! And the things that God said will be…really will come true! Someday we‘ll see beyond the stars, And dwell up where the clouds are far behind us! Where troubles will no longer be… and we can spend eternity! Our Lord will call us! Somewhere over the rainbow, We will fly! We‘ll fly over the rainbow, In the sweet by-and-by! To our Dear Lord we‘ll fly! Selected by Kelly Brooks

In sweet memory of Mother Dear, and in joyful anticipation of that blessed day when we can join our loved ones in HEAVEN to spend ETERNITY and see JESUS face to face!

MOTHERS… AND OTHERS Amos R. Wells Others weary of the noise, Mothers play with girls and boys; Others scold because we fell, Mothers kiss and make it well. Others love us more or less, Mothers love with steadiness. Others pardon, hating yet, Mothers pardon and forget. Others keep the ancient score, Mothers never shut the door. Others grow incredulous, Mothers still believe in us. Others throw their faith away, Mothers pray, and pray, and pray.

POEMS 23 FOR THIS CAUSE… TELL GOD HOW MUCH YOU LOVE HIM For this cause…I bow my knees, Tell God how much you love Him, To the Victor of my peace. Not in words, but with deeds. Who endured the very wrath of God, He is worth, whatever the cost, To pay for my release. To love another, however He leads.

For this cause…I lift my hands, If someone says, ―I love God,‖ To the Champion of my joy. But lashes out at another, Who delivers me from Satan‘s snare, Then they should question the love And the powers that destroy. They have toward God the Father. For this cause…I yield my life, To the Redeemer of my soul. It is easy to love a stranger, Freely offering up my all, They have never done us wrong. To His supreme control. Even to love a brother With whom we love to sing our . For this cause…I seek thy face, As a son to his father would. But how about the one, Because thy patience has won my heart, Be it family or other kin, As only THE SAVIOUR could! Who have wronged us, brought us pain? MATTHEW 6:19–21 Tell God how much you love Him, The flower blooms and then is dead, Rise above the hurt and pain. The leaves are green but soon turn red. Reach out with love toward others, The snow is here then melts away, God smiles with pleasure unfeigned. The sunset fades to end each day. Gloria Wright

The seasons change four times a year, Shouts of laughter replace a tear. Little babies grow up so fast; MY LIFE Nothing on earth will ever last. O God, not like a stagnant pool,

With tepid depths, let my life be; What treasures are inside your heart? What will be left when you must part? But like a stream, undaunted, cool, My friend, where do you put your trust? That plunges, surges toward the sea. In lasting gold or rotting dust? O God, not like a sodden log, Don‘t waste your time on earthly things, Now, dead, tho‘ once a stately tree; And the false hope and peace it brings, But pushing high above the bog, Put your trust in the living Lord, Still upward yearning, let life be! Obey His Word and take His sword. 26 The Testimony May, 2011 CHOICES It really doesn‘t matter, one way or the other, The hairstyle I have chosen, or the one that‘s on my brother. It doesn‘t make a difference if cars are black or white, Or if I wear a color shade that you would think too bright. Salvation, holiness, and love, are heart and spirit things. They don‘t consist in what I drive, or what my brother sings. Why this fuss of right or wrong, bickering all the while? My brother‘s not like me, so what? Embrace him with a smile. Is this the truth? — The whole truth? Or is it only half… Is God the Author of these thoughts? Or does the devil laugh… To see so many Christians behind this thinking hide, And taking refuge in these ―truths,‖ Indulge in Self and Pride. It doesn‘t really matter? But God says that it does. And furthermore He teaches that it‘s not an idle fuss. If details do not matter, why didn‘t our Father say So simply to each child of His, ―Be holy, go thy way‖? Instead He gives instructions, On what to do and say, On how to treat our elders, and when and what to pray. On worship and its manner, Alms, and just how to bring, On who should be a leader, And how that we should sing. He tells us when to laugh and weep, and what to eat and drink, And how to talk, and work, and sleep, and even what to think. He cares about our business, If we are rich or poor, Our clothes, our love, our feelings, plans, relationships and more. ―Angel of light‖ the devil is—A wolf with clothing fair, Who cuts the truth in half, and spreads confusion everywhere. ―Do these things really matter?‖ He says to you and me. You have the right to choose your way, and thus in Christ you‘re free! You choose, Ah, there‘s the secret, of Satan‘s lie—half told! These choices are the building of either straw or gold. No, outward things don‘t save us, this fact is true, so true! But it‘s the choice behind them that saves or ruins you. The clothes you wear, your hairstyle, the words you think or say, The car you drive, the books you read, the work you do each day, The way you dress your children, the songs you want to sing, The preacher that you listen to, the way your phone may ring… Are all because of choices God sees and understands; He weighs each choice and it‘s reward in His all-knowing hands. Say not, ―It doesn‘t matter,‖ this is the devil‘s snare, The dress or car or shoe reveal the choice that put it there. When we are making choices, which question is our test? ―I wonder just what‘s wrong with it?‖ or ―Which way is the best?‖ What is our deepest longing? To glorify God‘s name? To build and edify His Church? A worker free of blame? Or is our heart the garden spot where grow the subtle weeds, Of flesh and self uncrucified, that trouble and mislead? If we are making choices, with heart and soul and mind, Completely given up to God, His blessing we will find. Author Unknown Selected by Weston and Lynae Peters
