Conversion of Historic Buildings. The Complex of San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome and the Reale Albergo dei Poveri in Naples ABSTRACT: The paper is focused on the theme of the reuse of public architectural heritage through two eloquent experiences, intimately connected to each other, concerning the monumental Complex of San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome and the Reale Albergo dei Poveri in Naples. Both structures, for their dimensions and architectural language, mark the surrounding urban fabric, forming powerful examples of the architecture of Enlightenment designed to fulfill public and social functions.

On one hand the violent disappearance of some controversial characters of the 20th century’s history (Yasser Arafat, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gheddafi), on the other hand the resistences to the creation of new political models coming from transnational spontaneous participatory processes. Against the totalitarianism’s forms persisting which the economic powers pervasiveness finishes to consolidate, we assist to the democracies involution, to the national states decadence, to the inequalities and social conflicts’ growth.

  • Architectural Temperance: Spain and Rome, 1700-1759
Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Through the inclusion of previously unpublished documents and images that shed light on the theoretical debates which shaped eighteenth-century architecture in Rome and Madrid, Architectural Temperance provides an insight into readers with new insights into the cultural history of early modern Spain. Victor Deupi teaches the history of art and architecture at the School of Architecture and Design at the New York Institute of Technology and in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University. His research focuses on cultural politics in the early modern Ibero-American world. Routledge Research in Architecture The Routledge Research in Architecture series provides the reader with the latest scholarship in the field of architecture. The series publishes research from across the globe and covers areas as diverse as architectural history and theory, technology, digital architecture, structures, materials, details, design, monographs of architects, interior design and much more. By mak- ing these studies available to the worldwide academic community, the series aims to promote quality architectural research.

  • 084-Santa Maria Del Buon Viaggio.Pages
(084/23) Santa Maria del Buon Viaggio ! Santa Maria del Buon Viaggio is a former confraternity church which is part of the complex of the Ripa Grande, and is at Via del Porto di Ripa Grande 8 in Trastevere. It is near the Ponte Sublicio, and should not be confused with San Michele a Ripa which is in the same enormous complex but to the north-east. The dedication was to the Blessed Virgin Mary. History: The present church is on or near the site of the mediaval church of Santa Maria della Torre, named after a 9th century defensive tower which had been converted into its campanile. This little church was given into the care of the Fathers of Christian Doctrine in 1578. (084/23) However, the old church was demolished at the end of the 17th century to make way for an extension of the Ospizio di San Michele. This orphanage had been founded in 1686, but in 1693 Pope Innocent XII commissioned the architect Carlo Fontana to renovate and extend it. The result was the enormous building now standing. A new church was incorporated into its fabric at the west end, renamed “Our Lady of the Good Voyage” since it was the guild church of the sailors who worked the river traffic to the Ripa Grande, which was then the main quay in the city. It had the right to a toll from every boat using the quay. The church itself was begun in 1710, and completed four years later. In 1941 it was granted to the Padri della Piccola Missione, who had a mission for deaf and dumb people here for some years.

SPONSOR PROSPECTUS SUMMARY Introduction 2 General Information 3 Sponsorship opportunities 6 Contacts 9 1 INTRODUCTION The spread of devices that allow the reading of books in digital format, the appearance of new technologies that will enable a more ergonomic reading on screen and enhanced features unthinkable in the analog world, the development, also in Italy, of a digital publishing offer no longer addressed only to an audience of "strong" readers or niches of professionals but also to a wide audience: all these elements introduce us more and more in an era of great transformations in the ways of access to recorded speech, in reading habits and in the dynamics of access to information. This development will have, in time not easily guessed, a strong impact on libraries services and ‐ as many think ‐ on their role as upholders of memory, access to knowledge and results of scientific research, promoters of reading and lifelong learning, to the point that it's hard to think that they can continue to play in the future the tasks for which they were established, without reinventing deeply its services. The Digital also creates huge problems on copyright, whose legal system is totally inadequate to ensure a fair balancing of the rights of copyright holders and those of users. The market, both professional‐scientific publications and consumer, is oriented to forms of access providing the sale of licenses, not of copies of which the user has the property, thus circumventing the possibility that cultural institutions can benefit from specific exceptions. Finally, these transformations take place against a backdrop of heavy economic crisis that is accelerating a trend already underway, according to which the State tends to gradually disengage from finance to culture (and beyond), throwing in a heavy crisis the future of libraries and other cultural institutions.
