Ritual Cleaning-Up of the City: from the Lupercalia to the Argei*
RITUAL CLEANING-UP OF THE CITY: FROM THE LUPERCALIA TO THE ARGEI* This paper is not an analysis of the fine aspects of ritual, myth and ety- mology. I do not intend to guess the exact meaning of Luperci and Argei, or why the former sacrificed a dog and the latter were bound hand and foot. What I want to examine is the role of the festivals of the Lupercalia and the Argei in the functioning of the Roman community. The best-informed among ancient writers were convinced that these were purification cere- monies. I assume that the ancients knew what they were talking about and propose, first, to establish the nature of the ritual cleanliness of the city, and second, see by what techniques the two festivals achieved that goal. What, in the perception of the Romans themselves, normally made their city unclean? What were the ordinary, repetitive sources of pollution in pre-Imperial Rome, before the concept of the cura Urbis was refined? The answer to this is provided by taboos and restrictions on certain sub- stances, and also certain activities, in the City. First, there is a rule from the Twelve Tables with Cicero’s curiously anachronistic comment: «hominem mortuum», inquit lex in duodecim, «in urbe ne sepelito neve urito», credo vel propter ignis periculum (De leg. II 58). Secondly, we have the edict of the praetor L. Sentius C.f., known from three inscrip- tions dating from the beginning of the first century BC1: L. Sentius C. f. pr(aetor) de sen(atus) sent(entia) loca terminanda coer(avit). -

Entrambe le strutture segnano, per mole e qualità del linguaggio adoperato, il tessuto urbano circostante costituendo esempi imponenti di quelle architetture dell’illuminismo pensate e progettate per assolvere a funzioni pubbliche e sociali. Le vicende evolutive del Complesso di San Michele a Ripa Grande presentano aspetti che possono indurci a guardare al caso romano come a un possibile modello di riferimento in tema di reusing di un edificio pubblico restituito nel tempo a una sua rinnovata funzione sociale e formativa, in grado di promuovere atti- vamente lo sviluppo del territorio urbano circostante. Both structures, for their dimensions and architectural language, mark the surrounding urban fabric, forming powerful examples of the architecture of Enlightenment designed to fulfill public and social functions. -

On one hand the violent disappearance of some controversial characters of the 20th century’s history (Yasser Arafat, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gheddafi), on the other hand the resistences to the creation of new political models coming from transnational spontaneous participatory processes. Against the totalitarianism’s forms persisting which the economic powers pervasiveness finishes to consolidate, we assist to the democracies involution, to the national states decadence, to the inequalities and social conflicts’ growth. Nemanja Cvijanović theorizes a sort of global political tectonics, wondering about the dynamics which rule it and he does it with the determination and the strenght distinguish his research. Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Their statues and stories were referenced by nearly thirty authors, from the second century BCE to the early fifth century CE. Previous scholarship has focused on the bravery and exemplarity of these heroes, yet a thorough examination of their monuments and their influence has never been conducted.1 This study offers a fresh outlook on the role the statues played in the memory of ancient authors. Horatius Cocles and Cloelia are paired in several ancient texts, but the reason for the pairing is unclear in the texts. This pairing is particularly unique because it neglects Mucius Scaevola, whose deeds were often relayed in conjunction with Horatius Cocles’ and Cloelia’s; all three fought the same enemy at the same time and place. This pairing can be attributed, however, to the authors’ memory of the statues of the two heroes in the Forum. -
