Slim Aarons Poolside | Getty Images Gallery Slim Aarons born George Allen Aarons ; October 29, — May 30, was an American photographer noted for photographing socialites, jet-setters and celebrities. At 18 years old, Aarons enlisted in the U. Aarons said combat had taught him the only beach worth landing on was "decorated with beautiful, seminude girls tanning in a tranquil sun. After the war, Aarons moved to California and began Poolside with Slim Aarons celebrities. Aarons never used a stylist, or a makeup artist. He made his career out of what Poolside with Slim Aarons called "photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places. Poolside with Slim Aarons was one of them. Aarons claimed that he was raised in New Hampshire, was an orphan, and had no living relations. After his death in his widow and daughter learned the truth that Aarons had grown up in a poor immigrant Yiddish-speaking family on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As a boy his mother was diagnosed with mental health issues and admitted to a psychiatric hospital, which caused him to be passed around among relatives. Morris All Rights Reserved Acknowledgments Fascinated by the elaborately scrolling wicker of the late nineteenth century, I originally sought to research the role of wicker in turn-of-the-century life. Through Brock Jobe, Frank McNamee, and Richard Saunders, I learned of the widespread return of wicker to porches and home interiors alike in the1970s and 1980s. Eager to know more about the development of the twentieth-century wicker revival, I researched the interplay of wicker and American culture in the second half of the twentieth century to compose this thesis. I owe the utmost gratitude to my thesis advisor, Dr. Oscar P. Fitzgerald, for his willingness to support my ideas. His calm demeanor and consistent belief in my abilities have always been heartening. (Frank) Jay Haynes was born to Levi Hasbrouck and Caroline Oliphant Haynes in Saline, Michigan on October 28, 1853. He moved to Wisconsin in 1876, and it was there he began pursuing a career in photography. Opening a studio in Moorhead, Minnesota, he became the Northern Pacific Railroad's official photographer. Beginning in 1879, Mr. Haynes traveled exhaustively for the Railroad, making photographs of the western frontier, Canada, and Alaska. His daring stereoscopic views of Fargo, Dakota produced by twin-lens cameras were particularly captivating. An important turning point in Mr. Haynes' life and career occurred in 1881, when he first traveled to Yellowstone Park. He was awestruck by the Park's scenic beauty and unspoiled natural habitat. He became committed not only to taking photographs that featured Yellowstone's majestic splendor, but also to preserving its environment and natural resources. We welcomed more than 8,000 visitors and ended the evening with a band performance and fireworks. State Representative Gail Cariddi, Senator Ben Downing, and Board of Trustees President Peter Willmott joined for the ribbon cutting. The permanent collection has been reinstalled in the renovated Museum Building and is accompanied by nearly forty loans from private collectors. Visitors and staff alike are thrilled to see the return of their favorite paintings. We’re proud to announce that Apollo, the London-based international arts magazine, has chosen the Clark to receive its Museum Opening Award for best museum expansion in 2014. The Clark, selected by Apollo's editorial team and a panel of arts writers, was the “overwhelming winner” among a group of other museums. The award recognizes “the singular achievement accomplished in uniting art and architecture to create a completely original museum-going experience that defines a new standard for the field.” We opened Make It New: Abstract Expressionist Paintings from the National Gallery of Art in the lower galleries of the Clark Center. This addition reflects not only our physical expansion as an Institute, but also our expansion into the mid-twentieth century with the ability to display much larger works of art.

The interdisciplinary installation aims to reanimate host Truman Capote (1924-1984), author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) and In Cold Blood (1966); his honoree, Katharine Graham (1917-2001), President of the Washington Post; and the convergence of 540 attending guests who traveled from around the world for the candlelit festivities. Few people stood in a more central position in the mid-1960s than Capote, one of the most well-known writers in his life time (Plimpton, “T.C.” 300).

Van Scoy Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Criticism Stony Brook University 2010 In the late 1970s, a critically celebrated new “art” photography surfaced, characterized by large-scale, directed photographs, or tableaux, and identified in work by Jeff Wall, Thomas Ruff, and Jean-Marc Bustamante. However, for the past 30 years, American photographer Tina Barney has also created large, color tableaux featuring her upper class family and friends using a snapshot aesthetic. While critics and journalists have evaluated Barney’s work only in terms of her wealthy background and family portraiture, I believe that her photography is an exemplar of the modern-day hybrid tableau form.
