Doran A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Megan Rancier © 2012 Molly Doran All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Eftychia Papanikolaou, Advisor Since receiving its first performance in 1879, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s fifth opera, Eugene Onegin (1877-1878), has garnered much attention from both music scholars and prominent figures in Russian literature. Despite its largely enthusiastic reception in musical circles, it almost immediately became the target of negative criticism by Russian authors who viewed the opera as a trivial and overly romanticized embarrassment to Pushkin’s novel. Criticism of the opera often revolves around the fact that the novel’s most significant feature—its self-conscious narrator—does not exist in the opera, thus completely changing one of the story’s defining attributes. Scholarship in defense of the opera began to appear in abundance during the 1990s with the work of Alexander Poznansky, Caryl Emerson, Byron Nelson, and Richard Taruskin. These authors have all sought to demonstrate that the opera stands as more than a work of overly personalized emotionalism. In my thesis I review the relationship between the novel and the opera in greater depth by explaining what distinguishes the two works from each other, but also by looking further into the argument that Tchaikovsky’s music represents the novel well by cleverly incorporating ironic elements as a means of capturing the literary narrator’s sardonic voice. -

West L, Frank Baum lived in Aberdeen, South Dakota, from Sep- tember 1888 until April 1891. During this period, he ran a store called Baum's Bazaar for a little over a year, and when that enterprise failed, he tried his hand at publishing a weekly newspaper named the Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer. Baum man- aged to keep the paper going until March 1891, but in the end, it, too, proved to be a financial failure. Feeling defeated, Baum left Aberdeen that April and moved to Chicago, where he even- tually achieved fame as a children's author. Even though Baum had little success as an Aberdeen businessman, the experiences he gained while living on the Dakota prairie provided him with material and insights that he would later draw upon in his sto- ries. The literary critics and biographers who have studied Baum are not in complete agreement as to how his Dakota years influenced his writings. Some critics argue that the opening scenes in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), which Baum places in Kansas, are really set in South Dakota. Michael Patrick Hearn takes this position in The Annotated Wizard ofOz, stat- ing that these scenes "are largely Baum's recollections of the great gray prairie of the Dakota Territory (now South Dakota)."' Very few people had these song books, and some, like me, weren’t even aware that they existed. While new songs had been printed in the American Go Journal, there was clearly a need for a new collection of Go songs. Last year I decided to do whatever I could to bring the AGA Song Book up to date. I wanted to collect as many of the old songs as I could find, as well as the new songs that had been written since Bob High’s last song book. Exhibition curator Chris Loker shared the clash of “Mary versus Pippi” to illustrate the difficult deci- sionmaking required to arrive at the Grolier Club’s “One Hundred Books Famous in Children’s Literature,” on view through February 7 at the head- quarters of America’s oldest bibliophile society, founded in 1884. The formulation of the joint catalog and exhibition was not an exercise in nos- talgia, even as Loker recognizes, and even honors, the powerful emotional pull children’s books can exert upon memory. Her intent was to produce a scholarly tool for serious book collectors while also crafting a catalog and exhibition that would delight the general reading public as well as hard-core bibliophiles. According to Loker, “Through this project we have tried to find as many ways as possible to embrace children’s literature.” More than a century before the British Museum and BBC created the often-emulated History of the World in One Hundred Objects radio and online program, New York’s Grolier Club had launched its own “One Hundred” series. The club’s first such exhibition and catalog, One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature, dates to 1902–03. -

This study presents the view that, while the novel is much more than a simple expression of Byronism, understanding the basic Byronic traits and Lermontov1s own modification of them is essential for a true comprehension of the novel. Each of the first five chapters is devoted to a scrutiny of the separate tales that make up A Hero of Our Time. The basic Byronic motifs of storms, poses and exotic settings are examined in each part with commentary on some Lermontovian variations on them. -

By foregrounding the role of the audience in creating meaning and by minimizing the “show” as a coherent work, I reconnect musicals to their roots in comedy by way of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of carnival and reduced laughter. The audiences I study are kids, queers, and collectors, an alliterative set of people whose gender identities and expressions all depart from or fall outside of the normative binary. Focusing on these audiences, whose musical comedy fandom is widely acknowledged but little studied, I follow Raymond Knapp and Stacy Wolf to demonstrate that musical comedy provides a forum for identity formation especially for these problematically gendered audiences. ii The dissertation of Samuel Dworkin Baltimore is approved.
