Methods Dissectionsof achenes, florets, and involucralbracts of represenhtiyeAustralian species of 'Helipterum','Helichrysum', rnd of relatedgenera have been mounted in Hoyer'ssolution (King & Robinson1970) and examined under the stereo and high-powered microscope. Achenes have also beenembedded in Spurr'slow-viscosity embedding media and sections stained in ToluidineBlue. In additionmicroscope slides were studied of transverseseciions of achenes, some of which were preparedby P.S.Short, K.E. Wilsonand J. Nailonfor theirpaper ( 1989)on acheneanatomy while otherswere prepared for me by my colleaguesR. Cranfieldand C. Parker. Morphological studies The morphological charactersused in discriminating the generaand specieshave been described (or referencesgiven to their description) in a number of earlier papers(e.g. Wilson 1989, 1992b): supplementarynotes are here provided on some of thcsechffacters. Achenial hqirs. The natureof the hairs or papillae on the ircheneswas studicd. Various typesof hairs and papillaefound in the Gnaphalieaehave been described by Anderberg (1991) and their taxonomic 'Helichrysum 'papilla' significance assessed. In the elatum' grotp an additional type has been observed,in this two cells ofthe pericar:pepidermis are lateralty insteadof verticalty placed;they rre transprrentand often myxogenic. Papillaeof this type arerefcrred to as2-celled feneshae* . In some speciesof this group lhc fenestraeapprrently consist of only one longitudinally elongatedcell, this cell is usually not myxogenic and is not raised above the surfaceof the achene. In Anemocarpalow, rounded,2-celled papillae arepresentwith the lower cell slightly exceeding the upper. This papilla type, which was describedby Anderberg (1991),is comparableto that found in the Waitzia grotp of genera. In Argentipallium short narow-obovoid duplex hairs are present;these are similff to the more elongatedduplex hair type that is found in OzothamnLrs. Achenial neryation The vasculatureof the achenecan be determinedby mounting it in Hoyer's solution. Where the testais free from the pericrrp, or where it can be readily sepffated from it, the vasculatureis preferably examinedin an achenein which the seed(i.e. testa, endosperm, and embryo) hasbeen removed. In all Australian membersof the Gnaphalieaewhere this organ hasbeen studied, with the exceptionof Myriocephalusguzrilae F. Mucll. (seeS hort et al. 1989),there are two yascular strandsin the pedcarp. In the testathere is always one strandand this passesfor a varying degree longitudinally arcund the seed;it is bestobserved by studyinga whole mountofthe testafrom which the embryo and endosperm(which is usually I free from the testa) hayo beeo removed. * 'papilla' Thi s ty pe is alsofoDtrdi\ Bracteartha as is Dotedby E.E. • NEW SPECIES of GAMOCHAETA (ASTERACEAE: GNAPHALIEAE) from the EASTERN UNITED STATES and COMMENTS on SIMILAR SPECIES Guy L
NEW SPECIES OF GAMOCHAETA (ASTERACEAE: GNAPHALIEAE) FROM THE EASTERN UNITED STATES AND COMMENTS ON SIMILAR SPECIES Guy L. Nesom Botanical Research Institute of Texas 509 Pecan Street Fort Worth, Texas 76102-4060, U.S.A. ABSTRACT Gamochaeta argyrinea Nesom, sp. nov., is documented from 19 states, primarily in the southeastern U.S.A., and from Puerto Rico. It is a common and abundant species of ruderal habitats and has usu- ally been identified within a broad concept of Gamochaeta purpurea, which has a similar but broader geographic range. Gamochaeta argyrinea apparently is most closely similar to G. ustulata, another species commonly identified as G. purpurea but native to the Pacific coast region of the U.S.A. and adjacent Canada. Gamochaeta chionesthes Nesom, sp. nov., is described from localities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina—these plants also have been identified previously primarily as G. purpurea. A key and distribution maps are pro- vided for the six species of Gamochaeta in the U.S.A. with strongly bicolored leaves: G. argyrinea, G. ustulata, G. chionesthes, G. purpurea, G. simplicicaulis, and G. coarctata. The name Gamochaeta americana has been misapplied to G. coarctata, but G. americana sensu stricto has not been docu- mented for the U.S.A.; it occurs in the Antilles, Central America, Mexico, and South America and is reported to occur elsewhere as an adventive. In order to further clarify its identity, a technical de- scription and commentary are provided for G. americana. RESUMEN Se documenta Gamochaeta argyrinea Nesom, sp. nov., de 19 estados, principalmente del Sureste de U.S.A., y de Puerto Rico.

  • Gnaphalieae-Asteraceae) of Mexico
Botanical Sciences 92 (4): 489-491, 2014 TAXONOMY AND FLORISTIC NEW COMBINATIONS IN PSEUDOGNAPHALIUM (GNAPHALIEAE-ASTERACEAE) OF MEXICO OSCAR HINOJOSA-ESPINOSA Y JOSÉ LUIS VILLASEÑOR1 Departamento de Botánica, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México, D.F., México 1Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: In a broad sense, Gnaphalium L. is a heterogeneous and polyphyletic genus. Pseudognaphalium Kirp. is one of the many segregated genera from Gnaphalium which have been proposed to obtain subgroups that are better defi ned and presumably monophyletic. Although most Mexican species of Gnaphalium s.l. have been transferred to Pseudognaphalium, the combinations so far proposed do not include a few Mexican taxa that truly belong in Pseudognaphalium. In this paper, the differences between Gnaphalium s.s. and Pseudognaphalium are briefl y addressed, and the transfer of two Mexican species and three varieties from Gnaphalium to Pseudognaphalium are presented. Key Words: generic segregate, Gnaphalium, Mexican composites, taxonomy.

University Systematics of the Relhaniinae (Asteraceae- Gnaphalieae) in southern Africa: geography and evolution in an endemic Cape plant lineage. Nicola Georgina Bergh Town Thesis presented for theCape Degree of DOCTOR OF ofPHILOSOPHY in the Department of Botany UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN University May 2009 Town Cape of University ii ABSTRACT The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) houses a flora unique for its diversity and high endemicity. A large amount of the diversity is housed in just a few lineages, presumed to have radiated in the region. For many of these lineages there is no robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships, and few Cape plants have been examined for the spatial distribution of their population genetic variation. Such studies are especially relevant for the Cape where high rates of species diversification and the ongoing maintenance of species proliferation is hypothesised. Subtribe Relhaniinae of the daisy tribe Gnaphalieae is one such little-studied lineage. The taxonomic circumscription of this subtribe, the biogeography of its early diversification and its relationships to other members of the Gnaphalieae are elucidated by means of a dated phylogenetic hypothesis. Molecular DNA sequence data from both chloroplast and nuclear genomes are used to reconstruct evolutionary history using parsimony and Bayesian tools for phylogeny estimation.
