It is a prestigious evening to celebrate Canadian excellence and to provide young Canadians the opportunity to be extraordinary through sport, music and food. “We are Building a Better Canada by elevating and celebrating Canadian Excellence in Canadian culture” said co-founder, Lisa Pasin. “Join us at this Edmonton edition of Canada's Great Kitchen Party and enjoy a sizzling culinary competition as well as some great Canadian entertainment!” At the dynamic event, guests will have the opportunity to celebrate Canada’s best in sport, music and food and provide financial support for the amazing work of three Canadian charities B2ten (sport), MusiCounts (music) and CFCC (food) http://greatkitchenparty.com/ca/impact/ On Thursday, October 10 th the evening begins with the culinary competition where nine talented and distinguished chefs from Edmonton serve their chosen dish, paired with a Canadian beverage, to a panel of judges. On that panel will include last years Gold Medalist, Chef Davina Moraiko of RGE RD , who went on to compete in the finals at the Canadian Culinary Championships in February. Who will follow in Chef Davina’s footsteps this year, to be the gold medalist and move on to represent Edmonton in the finals in Ottawa on January 31 and February 1, 2020 in our nation’s capital?     REAL ROCK: AUTHENTICITY AND POPULAR MUSIC IN CANADA, 1984-1994 PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2018 © PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD, 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates the production and reception of English-Canadian rock music sound recordings, from 1984 to 1994, in relation to mutually constitutive understandings of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, and place. It examines how different forms of domestic Anglo rock served to reinforce or subvert the dominant ideologies undergirding the social order in Canada during the late twentieth century. This study analyzes a multifaceted discourse about authenticity that illustrates the ways in which a host of people – including musicians, music journalists, record label representatives and other professionals from across the music industries, government administrators, and consumers – categorized recorded sound, defined bodily norms, negotiated commerce and technology, and evaluated collective communication in Canada. This study finds that the principle of originality fundamentally structured the categorization of sound recordings in Canada. Originality, according to rock culture, encompassed the balancing of traditionalism with innovation. This dissertation determines that Whiteness organized English-Canadian rock culture in terms of its corporeal standards. White bodies functioned as the norm against which racialized Others were compared and measured. This study also shows how the concept of autonomy encouraged the proper negotiation of commerce and technology in an increasingly neoliberal political and economic condition. Independence of will fostered acceptable behaviour. Finally, this dissertation reveals that the rock status of a given concert rested upon the actions of the performers as well as the composition and reactions of ticket holders in the audience.

Under the direction of Simon Leclerc September 22 and 23 at 8:00 p.m. at Maison symphonique Montréal, September 15, 2015 – The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Leclerc as associate conductor of the OSM POP concert series and announce at the same time the first concert in that series: Kevin Parent and Jim Cuddy at the OSM, on September 22 and 23 at 8:00 p.m. Simon Leclerc, who possesses the rare talent of elevating pop music, of heightening its colors bringing out its nuances through his symphonic orchestrations, will be associated with the OSM for the next three seasons. After radically transforming the music of Mika and charming over 35,000 people on the Place des Festivals last July with the concert “Les Trois Accords symphonique,” Simon will kick off the new season of pop concerts by revisiting the worlds of Kevin Parent and Jim Cuddy in an orchestral version. Audiences will enjoy rediscovering, among others, hits that include Kevin Parent’s “Seigneur” and “Maudite Jalousie” along with Jim Cuddy’s “Ready to Fall” and “Pull Me Through.” Simon Leclerc Associate conductor of the OSM POP concert series Simon Leclerc studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and has become an arranger- orchestrator especially sought-after by Québec artists.
