Evening of Excellence a Night to Celebrate the Construction Industry SPONSORSHIP PROSPECTUS Evening of Excellence A Night to Celebrate the Construction Industry In Support of: June 12, 2020 | Edmonton Convention Centre Merit Contractors Association is a not-for-profit organization that represents and elevates open-shop construction workers and industry partners across Alberta. Since 1986, Merit has made it their mission to advance the construction industry and advocate open-shop values. Today, Merit proudly supports more than 1,300 members who employ over 40,000 hardworking people across Alberta. Merit Contractors Association’s Annual Awards Gala is a celebration of the construction industry and an opportunity to recognize members and their teams for their accomplishments. We invite you to contribute to this prestigious event and celebrate the best and brightest in Alberta’s construction industry. This year’s event will up the ante on this prestigious annual event. Not only will attendees celebrate those being recognized for their achievements but will also get to hear from inspiring Olympian and keynote speaker, Cassie Campbell-Pascall. After an inspiring presentation during the 2019 Awards, high demand led the team to invite her to return to join our celebration on June 12, 2020. Following Cassie’s presentation, and dinner, attendees will celebrate with a full-scale performance by The Jim Cuddy Band. As one half of Blue Rodeo’s award-winning songwriting duo, Jim Cuddy has one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music thanks to hits such as “Try,” “5 Days In May,” and “Bad Timing.” As a group Blue Rodeo has sold over five million records world-wide. In 1998, in between Blue Rodeo projects, Jim released his first solo SPONSORSHIP album (All In Time) and hit the road with The Jim Cuddy Band. He has since recorded three more albums. Cuddy PROSPECTUS won Best Male Vocalist at the 1999 JUNO Awards and Adult Alternative Album of the Year, for The Light That Guides You Home, at the 2007 JUNO Awards. In 2000, Cuddy and Blue Rodeo bandmate Greg Keelor were the recipients of the National Achievement Award at the annual SOCAN Awards held in Toronto. In 2013, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada along with Greg Keelor, for “their contributions to Canadian music and for their support of various charitable causes." MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR This year has been filled with significant change and considerable accomplishments, culminating with the launch of our new program and application system FACTOR 2.0 in April 2013. The goal of FACTOR 2.0 was simple: design a system and programs that award funding based on merit, are transparent and easy to use, and reflect the current business models of the Canadian independent music industry. This type of change was long overdue, as FACTOR’s previous funding model was based heavily on out-of-date business practices, which focused primarily on the physical sale of recorded music.

  • Real Rock: Authenticity and Popular Music in Canada, 1984-1994
REAL ROCK: AUTHENTICITY AND POPULAR MUSIC IN CANADA, 1984-1994 PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2018 © PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD, 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates the production and reception of English-Canadian rock music sound recordings, from 1984 to 1994, in relation to mutually constitutive understandings of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, and place. It examines how different forms of domestic Anglo rock served to reinforce or subvert the dominant ideologies undergirding the social order in Canada during the late twentieth century. This study analyzes a multifaceted discourse about authenticity that illustrates the ways in which a host of people – including musicians, music journalists, record label representatives and other professionals from across the music industries, government administrators, and consumers – categorized recorded sound, defined bodily norms, negotiated commerce and technology, and evaluated collective communication in Canada. This study finds that the principle of originality fundamentally structured the categorization of sound recordings in Canada. Originality, according to rock culture, encompassed the balancing of traditionalism with innovation. This dissertation determines that Whiteness organized English-Canadian rock culture in terms of its corporeal standards. White bodies functioned as the norm against which racialized Others were compared and measured. This study also shows how the concept of autonomy encouraged the proper negotiation of commerce and technology in an increasingly neoliberal political and economic condition. Independence of will fostered acceptable behaviour. Finally, this dissertation reveals that the rock status of a given concert rested upon the actions of the performers as well as the composition and reactions of ticket holders in the audience.
