Anthony Halpen, The Institute of Irish Studies, The University of Liverpool. This thesis considers the novel and the short story in the decades following the achievement of Irish independence from Britain in 1922. During these years, many Irish practitioners of the short story achieved both national and international acclaim, such that 'the Irish Short Story' was recognised as virtually a discrete genre. Writers and critics debated why Irish fiction-writers could have such success in the short story, but not similar success with their novels. Henry James had noticed a similar situation in the United States of America in the early nineteenth century. James decided the problem was that America's society was still forming - that the society was too 'thin' to support successful novel-writing. Irish writers and critics applied his arguments to the newly-independent Ireland, concluding that Irish society was indeed the explanation. Irish society was depicted as so unstructured and fragmented that it was inimical to the novel but nurtured the short story. Ireland was described variously: "broken and insecure" (Colm Tóibín), "often bigoted, cowardly, philistine and spiritually crippled" (John McGahern) and marked by "inward-looking stagnation" (Dermot Bolger). -

Hugvísindasvið Shifting Sympathies The Representation of the IRA in Borstal Boy B.A. Essay Heiða Lind Sigurbjörnsdóttir January 2015 University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English Shifting Sympathies The Representation of the IRA in Borstal Boy B.A. Essay Heiða Lind Sigurbjörnsdóttir Kt.: 040990-2409 Supervisor: Alan Searles January 2015 ABSTRACT Brendan Behan’s autobiographical novel, Borstal Boy, was published in 1958 and it inspired Peter Sheridan to make a film of the same name in 2000. Although they share the same title, the novel and the film adaptation differ in some fundamental ways. The novel is an Irish Republican Army themed story which focuses on Brendan’s experience as a teenager in three prisons and his interactions with other inmates and prison officials. The film tones down the IRA’s influence on the story and transitions the theme to a bisexual love triangle. The purpose of the essay is to investigate some of the differences between the novel and the film and to examine the reasons behind these changes, especially with regards to the theme shift from the main character’s nationalistic ideology in the novel to his sexual orientation in the movie. There are other shifts that occur as the story progresses, Brendan’s idealised view of the IRA and by extension his perception of all Englishmen as the enemy is gradually eroded as his friendship develops with other boys at Borstal. To support my thesis, I look at how the IRA is presented in both works and how it influences the story and I compare some facts about Behan with the works to try to explain where the bisexuality theme comes from. -

His intention was to fill an educational and cultural need unrecognized by commercial publishers. Hogan believed that large numbers of excellent playscripts, written by distinguished authors, were unavailable to the public, small theaters, and classrooms, because they were not commercially attractive to large publishing firms. Hogan, whose areas of scholarly expertise include modern drama and Irish literature, also wished to make the work of Irish literary figures available to both students and audiences in the United States. Although Proscenium Press began publishing in 1965, the Press was not incorporated until 1977, when incorporation became a necessary development in seeking tax exempt status as a nonprofit organization. Proscenium Press was incorporated in the State of Delaware, where Hogan had joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1970. -

by BRENDAN BEHAN lHE QUES"ORS lHFATRE COMPANY First performance 15th March 1980 THE HOSTAGE Brendan Behan was commissioned by Gael Linn (an organisation formed to preserve the Irish language) to write a play in Gaelic. Under the title of An Gia/I, The Hostage was first performed in Dublin in 1958. Joan Littlewood then bought it for staging at Stratford in an adapted form, including the add_ition of several characters and the songs - there were none in the original. Apparently Joan Little wood left Brendan Behan in her flat to make the alterations while she went on a holiday before the first rehearsal. On her return she found Behan, a quantity of empty bottles - but no alterations. She then virtually imprisoned Behan in the flat while he dictated the revisions to her (sometimes from the horizontal) until the text was ready. So successful was the Stratford production that in 1959 The Hostage, revised a second time, was presented in Paris at the Theatre des Nations Festival. It was voted the Play of the Year. So it was that Behan found himself representing (of all countries) Great Britain, and being chauffered around Paris in a car bearing the Union Jack. There was even a special reception at 'a famous American Bar' (see the notes on Behan between 1947 and 1952). The staff immediately recognised Behan and welcomed him as a long lost friend, to the astonishment of Behan's guide from the Ministry of Culture. In 1960 the second revised edition of The Hostage was performed in London's West End at Wyndhams Theatre. -

Sep 13, Joseph rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. Apart from the background, the book is perhaps mainly a sociological study of the interactions of quite a few characters in a penal system which is depicted as being quite humane. But it was well worth it, because Behan changes from an idealistic IRA initiate to someone who realizes that it is impossible to live for an ideal. In Borstal Boy , there are just friendships between young heterosexual men, shower scenes minus anything unusual, morning exercises, singing and reading classic literatures The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, Crime and Punishment, etc.
