  • Overview Recommendations for Submission the Operation
Annexure 7 - B2 - January 2018 Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Reference Committee Inquiry - Recommendations from the Furneaux Aviation Special Committee to Flinders Council Overview The Flinders Council makes this submission of behalf of its ratepayers, the people who reside in the municipality, or service the community from the mainland and, by necessity of remote island life, must use air transport on a regular basis, the cost of which impacts on living and service costs to the islands. Flinders and Cape Barren are the two largest islands in the Furneaux Group of islands that sit in the southern side of eastern Bass Strait. The Furneaux Group has 52 islands in all and lies within the Flinders Local Government area of Tasmania. Flinders and Cape Barren Islands are considered to be remote. The Local Government area resident population at the 2016 census was 906 and rising (17% rise between the last two census counts), with 833 of these residing on Flinders and around 70 on Cape Barren Island (CBI). The Flinders economy is based on agriculture with a nurtured and growing visitor economy and a negligible return from fishing. Access to the islands by sea is by a barge, the Matthew Flinders II, operated by Furneaux Freight out of Bridport, Tasmania. This vessel is designed to carry general cargo and livestock to move the 22,000 head of cattle and 40,000 head of sheep that leave the Islands each year. There is a general cargo run once a week from Bridport to Flinders and once a month to CBI. The number of passengers carried by the Matthew Flinders II is minute and travelling conditions are basic.

  • No. 27 Airlines of Tasmania Pty Ltd (T/A Par Avion)
Submission No 27 INQUIRY INTO REGIONAL AVIATION SERVICES Organisation: Airlines of Tasmania Pty Ltd (T/A Par Avion) Date received: 13/03/2014 From: Shannon Wells Sent: Thursday, 13 March 2014 To: State Development Subject: RE: Inquiry into regional aviation services - Invitation to lodge a submission Thank you for the opportunity to discuss As a very small regional airline, Airlines of Tasmania, trading as Par Avion, is a predominately Tasmanian based airline, we have recently sought approval, (and will commence in mid‐march), RPT services between Griffith NSW, and Essendon, Victoria, therefore we feel we are in a position to make a position to this committee. Airlines of Tasmania operate single pilot, RPT aircraft, up to the size of a 10 seat, twin engine Cessna Titan aircraft. We are by no means a major operator, however are well entrenched into General Aviation, owning an airport (Cambridge Aerodrome), an award winning tourism business, a flying school and operating an charter/airline service. We believe that the General Aviation industry has some significant issues facing it, and this extends to “Regional Aviation”, while we don’t believe we have all the answers, we wish to highlight some issues which we believe are an issue for the industry. Costs o The costs of operating an aviation business, are far exceeding the costs of inflation . Fuel price, both due to carbon tax, overseas markets, and the fuel excise duty, makes aviation fuel a significant expense for an operator, which we have little ability to control . AVGAS refineries are closing, which will further lead to fuel price increases – alternative fuels for example Diesel engines, are still in development for “higher performance” piston twin engine aircraft and don’t appear to be on the market for the foreseeable future.
