The Battle of Belleau Wood Southern Aisne < Aisne < Picardy < France The Battle of Belleau Wood Belleau is one of the best known French villages in the United States since the decisive battle led by American troops against the German army in June 1918. The wood and adjoining American cemetery have become symbols of the commitment of the Marines in the Great War. Today the Belleau Wood site offers its many visitors a setting which, in its present state, can recount an important part of the history of this war. It was one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Marines and traces can still be seen at the site - trenches, shell holes and ruins. Soon after the end of the Great War the Belleau Wood Memorial Association opening up paths and making the traces of war visible. Today the American Battle Monument Commission maintains this natural setting in collaboration with the ‘Conservatoire d’espaces naturels de Picardie’. As you walk along the paths you will see an environment which suffered during the war: especially the damaged trees, called «veterans». You can also discover its distinctive geography: dry moorland on sandy acidic soil, large sandstone blocks (home to some rare and delicate mosses), and holly oak woodland, the thickest of its kind in Picardy. © Aisne Tourisme Joyce Kilmer 1917: Joyce Kilmer, the Ame- A walk in Belleau Wood rican poet, came to fight in France. 1918. Over the next 50 years, Hannibal’s population expanded sixfold as the city prospered due to the booming lumber industry. By the early 1900s other industries began to grow as well. During this time of transition, two families of modest means called Hannibal home. Robert Stewart, a local carpenter, and his wife, Lorane, had three sons: Chester, Rolla, and Ben. Walter and Augusta Griffen and their five children moved to Hannibal from Kansas, and created the Yankee Produce Company, a vegetable and flower greenhouse located just blocks away from the Mississippi River. In 1905, when Robert Stewart passed away, the Stewart family relied on its sons for support. The eldest, Chester, began work as a railroad office clerk while his brothers continued their education. By the time the United States mobilized in preparation to enter the conflict in Europe, Rolla was studying medicine near Hannibal and Chester had moved to Minneapolis to teach at the University of Minnesota medical school. The youngest of the Stewarts, Ben, worked as a welder on the Hannibal railroads after his graduation from Hannibal High School in 1916.

American Battle Monuments Commission – World War One Sites Routes of Interest –Aisne-Marne American Cemetery & battles around Belleau Wood. Note: The Aisne – Marne American Cemetery is located on a battlefield. Behind the cemetery to the south is Belleau Wood, the site of many days of bitter fighting between the German Army and Soldiers, and Marines of the 2nd Division of the United States Army. The fighting in the wood was accompanied by other engagements fought to secure, or outflank the wood. Further afield there were numerous French and American artillery batteries, and medical units. 1. Leaving the American Cemetery turn right and then immediately left by the church. • The church was heavily damaged in the war, and rebuilt post war with the aid of the veterans of the U.S. 26th “Yankee” Division who fought here. Their crest is on the right gate post at the churchyard entrance. There is a French inscription over the door, and numerous dedicatory and memorial features inside. 2. Go toward Centre Ville. 3. Keep your eye open on the right for a red hydrant by a stone trough. • The trough and old pump are the Belleau Pennsylvania Fountain, the former town water supply, a memorial to Pennsylvanians who fell in battle here 4. Continue toward Centre Ville. The Mairie (town hall) is on the right. It may have flags over the door. • There are historical displays in a small museum next to the town hall, called the Belleau Remembrance Museum. 5. Turn left after the Town Hall. 6. Drive up the hill and turn right on Rue du Parc.

TIGERS IN THE TRENCHES: A STUDY OF CLEMSON IN THE GREAT WAR A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts History by Brock M. Lusk May 2015 Accepted by: Dr. Alan Grubb, Committee Chair Dr. Rod Andrew Dr. Jerome Reel ABSTRACT In April 1917, Clemson Agricultural College was a small, relatively-unknown land-grant college. The college had only been open for 23 years, 8 months with an average annual enrollment of 616 students when the United States declared war and entered World War I. By the end of the war, over 821 Clemson graduates and former students would serve in the U.S and Allied military services. James C. Littlejohn, the registrar from 1910 – 1925, attempted to catalog the service of these alumni during and after the war. In order to conduct this study, a cross reference of Clemson students from 1896 – 1920 with soldier rosters from World War I was necessary.
