Caerphilly Castle is an object of great attraction from its noble dimensions, being the largest in the principality, covering several acres. It is an immense pile of lofty walls and massive towers, partly over thrown, while huge masses lie scattered around. The castle comprises many towers, a mint, decorated arches, in the pointed style, and a variety of fine architectural ornaments. The mint is a circular tower of no great height ; but chilse by it stands the leaning tower, a singularly attractive object : it consists of about one-half or semi-circum ference of a round tower eleven feet thick. It was the great border fortress standing on the debateable ground between England and 'Vales, which was so long contested by both nations under the title of "The Marchas."
