The Church in Wales Yr Eglwys Yng Nghymru Vicar for Bargoed & Pontlottyn in the Taff Rhymney Ministry Area Profile – 2021 The Bishop of Llandaff is seeking to appoint a Vicar for Bargoed & Pontlottyn in the Taff Rhymney Ministry Area The Bishop of Llandaff is looking for a priest to join a new Ministry Area team, serving the area, which lies between the Rhymney and Taff Valleys, in the north-east of the Diocese of Llandaff. The new Ministry Area will bring together four former parish groupings, with twelve churches, served by four incumbent clergy and two licensed readers. Within the team, the new Vicar for Bargoed & Pontlottyn will take primary pastoral responsibility for the northernmost part of the Ministry Area, served currently by six churches located in Bargoed, Pontlottyn and nearby villages. The Ministry Area faces a time of significant change, as new patterns of life and work evolve from the regeneration of former mining communities. The new Vicar will be expected to engage with colleagues, in developing creative ways to respond to these challenges, using all the resources of the churches to transform the lives of people across the whole Ministry Area. S/he will help build teams of lay and clergy colleagues, working collaboratively, so that people, inside and outside the churches, can grow in faith and thrive in this changing environment. We seek to do this in a Diocese that is strong, confident, alive and living in faith, engaged with the realities of life and serving others in His name. Our profound belief in the sovereignty of God means that we will look to continue Christ’s church and vocation by telling the joyful story of Jesus, growing the Kingdom of God by empowering all to participate and building the future in hope and love. The Taff Rhymney Ministry Area The Taff Rhymney Ministry Area will be formed on 1 January 2022, bringing into one legal unit the former parishes of Pontlottyn with Fochriw, Bargoed with Deri & Brithdir, Gelligaer, Treharris Trelewis Bedlinog & Llanfabon, and Ystrad Mynach & Llanbradach. The Ministry Area Transition Team (MATT – clergy and lay leaders from across the Ministry Area) has been meeting regularly during the course of 2021 and has begun to form the structures which will enable the mission and ministry of the Taff Rhymney MA to be effective during the years ahead. The communities we serve are largely (though not entirely) in the Rhymney and Taff Valleys and are all situated between the two rivers. They are largely former mining communities which had (prior to the Pandemic) begun to show signs of regeneration. Even before the current formal move towards a Ministry Area, the clergy of this area had been meeting regularly and working together unofficially, with a number of shared activities, such as Messy Church, being planned between the parishes. They are joined in the Ministry Team by two licensed Readers, Carolyn Corbin (based in Gelligaer) and Sarah Steadman (based in Ystrad Mynach), who bring a wealth of experience and perspective to the team. But the next stage of development will be a challenge for many in the former parishes, who have had a well established pattern of pastoral ministry, and been used to thinking about mission primarily within their own context. The task which lies ahead, as we bring our Churches and congregations out of lockdown is to build on the traditions which have been established, and to learn from the valuable experience of each other, as we seek to work more closely together. The MATT have been cautious in their approach so far, in order to bring about permanent and effective change when it comes. The new Priest will play a vital role in this process of development. They will be someone who is excited about change, and who is energised by the challenges it brings. Establishing, developing and growing the new MA will be a priority for the next few years, balanced by a strong continuing pastoral presence in the communities which the new Vicar will serve. Staffing – Clergy & Licensed Ministers While the allocation of ministerial responsibilities or specialisms may vary in future among clergy and licensed ministers, at present each of the clergy has been assigned a primary pastoral responsibility for people and congregations in a specific geographical part of the Ministry Area, where they also reside:- Residing in: Primary Responsibility: Ministry Area Leader & Area Dean Ystrad Mynach Holy Trinity (Ystrad Mynach) Canon Steven Kirk Vicar Gelligaer St Catwg (Gelligaer) Revd Gary Powell St Margaret (Gilfach) Vicar Treharris St Matthias (Treharris) Revd Gareth Coombes St John Baptist (Nelson) St Mabon (Llanfabon) Vicar Bargoed St Gwladys (Bargoed) to be appointed St Peter (Deri) St David (Brithdir) St Tyfaelog (Pontlottyn) St Mary & St Andrew (Fochriw) St Aidan (Butetown) 5 Map: Taff Rhymney – Areas of Pastoral Responsibility 6 2. Bargoed & Pontlottyn The area of Bargoed and Pontlottyn is made up six churches, which, until 2018, were organised in two distinct parish groupings of three churches, each with a different incumbent. The new Vicar, in exercising pastoral and liturgical leadership for the area, will need to be sensitive to this past, while at the same time giving priority in future to a closer integration of all six of these communities, and their churches, into the work and vision of the wider Ministry Area as a whole. 2.1 Bargoed, Deri and Brithdir The area (formerly parish) of Bargoed and Deri with Brithdir is set in the Rhymney Valley, a former mining area which is showing signs of regeneration. This area has great natural beauty and a strong community spirit. There are many good resources, including country parks and leisure facilities with a wide range of sporting activities and resources. All three of these communities have a strong sense of community spirit, and an active voluntary sector. The town of Bargoed is by far the largest of the 3 communities, with a population of over 6,100, which includes the large Gilfach Fargoed Estate. It adjoins the neighbouring community of Gilfach (currently under the pastoral care of the Vicar in Gelligaer). A retail development has been built on a plateau created below the town, incorporating a Morrisons supermarket, with other retail outlets and restaurants. Bargoed has a good transport network, with a railway station (direct line to Cardiff), a bus station and link road giving easy access to Cardiff and Merthyr. Within Bargoed there is a large country park and a golf course. The village of Deri in the Darran Valley has a population of just over 2,000, and is served by a small primary school, a post office and village shop and pub, and an active Community Centre, offering a wide range of activities including courses, clubs and exhibitions. There is a strong community spirit within Deri, and Parc Cwm Darran, a country park offering a variety of facilities, is situated at the top end of the village, amidst attractive scenery. There are two other places of worship: the Gospel Hall and YsgwyddGwyn Presbyterian Church. Brithdir is the smallest of the 3 communities, population of 750.
