September 1917 Nutrition of civilians and soldiers in the Gorica region during the time of the Isonzo battles 1915 - 1917 Italy, a member of the Triple Alliance since 1882, declared neutrality on 3rd August, 1914. However, after secret negotiations with both combating sides, it decided to join the Entente Powers on 26th April, 1915 and signed the secret Treaty of London, which promised Italy territories of considerable size in Trentino, southern Tyrol, the Isonzo basin, Istria and Dalmatia. On 23rd May, 1915 it declared war against Austria- Hungary and on 26th August it also declared war against Germany. Hostilities on the front line started on 24th May, confirming the fear that a new battlefield would appear along the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary, which was almost 600 kilometres long. The new military front line ran from the Stelvio pass on the Swiss- Italian-Austrian triple border through Tyrol, Carnia and the Isonzo region to the Adriatic Sea. The 90-km long southern part of the front line between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps, named the Isonzo Front, was geographically the most suitable for the breakthrough deeper into Austro-Hungarian territory. It ran along the left bank of the Isonzo river (the Soèa river), from Rombon through Ravelnik, ascending to Javorèek, Lipnik, Vriè and Krn. From there, the front line descended to Mrzli vrh and Vodil vrh and reached the Isonzo river again near Dolje. From there it continued from Sv. Daniel near Volèe past Mengore and Cvetje to Selo, where it formed the Tolmin bridgehead, which defended the railway station in Most na Soèi and the road towards Ljubljana. From there it ran across the Banjice plateau, Sabotin, encircled Gorizia and defended the access to the Vipava valley (Sabotin, Oslavje, Podgora, Kalvarija)

    Margrit Mondavi’s Blini © Janet Fletcher / Planet Cheese www.janetfletcher.com Ingredients: • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup buckwheat flour • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon kosher or sea salt • 1 large egg, beaten • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk, or more if needed • 2 tablespoons clarified butter, or more if needed, melted • 6 to 8 ounces smoked salmon or smoked trout • 1/3 cup labneh, crème fraîche or sour cream • Fresh dill or thinly sliced chives for garnish Directions: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, buckwheat flour, baking soda and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients and whisk well to blend. The batter should be a little thinner than pancake batter. Transfer it to a container with a pour spout. Heat a griddle or nonstick skillet over medium heat. If using a skillet, be sure it rests level on the burner. When hot, brush lightly with melted butter. Carefully pour enough batter onto the griddle to spread into a 2-inch circle (or any size you like). Cook until bubbles appear on the surface and the blini begin to brown lightly around the edges, about 45 seconds. Turn with an offset spatula and cook on the second side until done, about 45 seconds. Taste the first one or two and adjust the heat or timing as needed. Transfer the first batch of blini to a serving platter. Brush with melted butter. Top while hot with a piece of smoked salmon, a dollop of labneh and a sprig of dill or sprinkle of chives.

    Cozonac (Sweet bread) Ingredients Ingredients (for 1 piece) For the filling • 1 kg white flour • 50 g butter • 3 spoons of cocoa powder • 500 ml milk • 300 g walnut • 50 ml of sunflower oil • 100 g raisins • 250 g sugar • 150 g sugar • 4 eggs • 4 egg white • Yeast • 150 ml milk • salt • lemon zest Instructions 1. Set aside 1/4 of a cup of milk and start to heat the rest in a saucepan over a medium heat, mixing in the sugar and the butter until it’s melted. Now let the mixture cool until it’s slightly warm. 2. Add the beaten eggs and lemon zest. Letting the milk cool before adding the eggs. It is advisable to grating the lemon zest directly into the saucepan for maximum freshness. 3. Warm up the milk you put to one side and add it to the sugar and yeast. Mix well and allow to stand for a few minutes, until the yeast starts fermenting. 4. Put the white flour into a bowl and sprinkle the salt on top. Then pour the yeast mixture over as well as the milk and eggs mixture and mix well into the flour. Work the dough for about 20 minutes (or more) until it’s no longer sticking to your hands. 5. Place the dough into an oiled bowl and cover it with a clean towel. Leave it in a warm place to rise until it’s doubled in size. This should take about an hour. 6. Preparing the cozonac filling. Start by heating the milk and sugar in a saucepan over a medium heat.

    Specific language contact phenomena in the Habsburg Empire and their possible utilization for teaching Czech as a foreign language in Austria1 Stefan Michael Newerkla ABSTRACT: Not only does pluricentric German display characteristic features of Standard Average European, but it also comprises several distinguishing features in various contact areas with Baltic, Finno-Ugrian and Slavic languages. Like isoglosses, which constitute certain dialect areas in dialectology, bundled language contact phenomena distinguish certain contact areas from others. A major language contact area in Central Europe — merely one out of several — is the contact zone which we can associate with the former centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with German, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak as its core languages as well as Polish, Slovene and others as its only partially involved peripheral languages. From this contact area, a micro-area emerged in Vienna and Eastern Austria that was particularly affected by the influence of Czech on German vice versa. This contribution illustrates how the latter language contact phenomena can fruitfully contribute to the process of teaching Czech as a foreign language in Austria.
