The avifaunaof La Bocanaand San Ignaciolagoons was first described by Huey (1927). Sincethen, the onlyornithological research in the area hasbeen by Reithermanand Storrer(1981), Danemann(1991), and Danemannand Guzmbn(1992), who studiedvarious aspects of the avifaunaof San IgnacioLagoon. No ornithologicalinformation from La Bocanaor El Coyotehas been publishedsince Huey's early account. In September1991 we surveyedEl Coyote and La Bocana lagoons,usually referred as "esteros."Here we summarizeobservations recorded during those surveys. El Coyote (alsoknown as La Escondida),located between 26ø48 ' and 26ø50' N, and 113ø24' and 113ø29' W, hastwo main armsthat reachdepths from 2 to 4 m and is separatedfrom the ocean by a narrow sand bar. The shorelineof the lagoon consistsof sandbeaches (along the bar), mud fiats, mangroves,and salt marshes. Mostof the lagoonis coveredby mangroveislands separated by narrowchannels. In the open areasof the lagoon,low tidesexpose large shoals.Human activitiesin El Coyoteinclude some commercial and sportfishing, mainly in the deeperchannels. EsteroLa Bocana,known to Huey (1927) as Pond Lagoon, is locatedbetween 26ø42' and 26ø47' N, and 113ø34' and 113ø42' W. It is a narrowlagoon separated from the oceanby a sandbar extendingnorthwest-southeast. Averaging 600 m, its widthranges from 150 to 1250 m. Thisestero holds some mangrove islands and salt marshes,and its shorelineincludes sand beachesalong the bar, and mud fiats, marshes,and mangrovesalong the mainlandcoast.

When mature, gulf cordgrass is considered poor forage for livestock and fair for wildlife. Prescribed burning improves the nutritional quality of gulf cordgrass and allows room for other grasses and forbs to grow. Editors Alan M. Trickster Stories from the American West David Ostheimer Introduction “The West” - Ask a first grader what this means and he may mention the cardinal direction. Most likely he will look at you and shrug his shoulders. Ask about “The American West” and you will continue to get blank stares. Native Americans? If it is after Thanksgiving, first graders will eagerly say that they were the Pilgrims’ friends. Indians? The Indian students will proudly raise their hands. Cowboys? Everyone knows they wear those cowboy hats and boots. The Spanish and Mexicans? What do they have to do with The American West? When I was a child we played “Cowboys and Indians”. We knew who John Wayne was; he was a cowboy. We saw him in movies on Saturday afternoon television. He wore a ten-gallon hat, carried six-shooters and rode a horse. Indians wore buckskin pants, war paint on their faces and feathers in their headdresses. They also had war cries and scalped people. At Halloween, you would see both cowboys and Indians. Today, country music (not country and western) stars wear cowboy hats and American Indians are pretty much absent from popular culture. Our students have no cultural references from which to draw background knowledge. Our Delaware Social Studies curriculum does not explicitly mention Native Americans until fourth grade.i Depending on their teacher, students may get some information on Native Americans as part of Columbus Day or Thanksgiving activities but explicit, targeted instruction is not prioritized. The American West and/or the pioneer experience may be explored as part of a unit on comparing communities, past and present, but again this instruction, if given, takes place in later grades.

[email protected] Paper prepared for presentation on June 11, 2009 at the XXVIII International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Panel CSM034, “Migration, Religion, and Language” Abstract In this paper I analyze the origins, usage, and connotations of a variety of official and colloquial terms in Spanish and English that are used routinely in the vernacular discourse about border crossings made by undocumented Mexican migrants to the United States. I focus especially on Spanish-language terms that are used to refer to migrants and the service providers they hire to help them reach their destinations in the United States, emphasizing the implications that the use of different terms has for the framing of the migration experience. Terms for migrants that I discuss in the paper include mojados, mojarras, patos, pollos, and alambristas. The names for migration facilitators that I discuss include traficantes, contrabandistas, bajadores, pasadores, pateros, polleros, and coyotes. In addition, I discuss some of ways in which these terms relate to one another in the discourse of clandestine migration. Key words: human smuggling undocumented migration border studies Mexico folklore In my study of the clandestine border-crossing experiences of Mexican migrants over the last decade or so, I have been struck at the creativity, complexity, and rhetorical richness of lexicon that has arisen as a way of talking about these experiences.

Autor: Santiago Sánchez González PARTE I Brigadas del espacio El epígrafe que hemos situado como encabezamiento, corresponde al título de la película del holandés Paul Verhoeven, director cinematográfico de controvertida carrera. En sus inicios fue uno de los autores que veían su obra estudiada por universitarios de los años setenta, dentro de los circuitos de Arte y Ensayo y cuyo trabajo, por entones en ciernes, era motivo de comentarios y críticas que le convertían en una posibilidad de pasar a engrosar las filas del llamado “cine de autor”, que por aquel entonces era una especie de pasaporte para le eternidad. En este sentido cabe recordar su hoy bastante olvidada Delicias turcas (Turk fruti, 1973), en la que podía verse a un actor que iba para grande del cine y que, sin embargo, se quedó en el camino, nos referimos al “replicante” Rutger Hauer. El transcurrir de los años hizo que quien parecía sería un director de selectas minorías, se trasladase a Estados Unidos de América. Y allí se convirtiese en uno de los autores más comerciales del cine de Hollywood. Robocop (1987) o, sobre todo Instinto Básico (Basic Instinct, 1992), hicieron de él alguien famoso y a quien los ejecutivos de las “Majors” le reconocían su mérito. Eso no impidió batacazos monumentales a posteriori, como fue Showgirls (1995) y que se le empezase a cuestionar. En 1997 realizó Starship Troopers, es decir el título de nuestro epígrafe. Una aventura espacial de soldados contra máquinas y arácnidos gigantescos, dirigidos éstos por una masa cerebral magmática y oculta, donde la violencia ocupaba un puesto preponderante en la puesta en escena de la película.
