Frankly, the plots of the Paul Temple mysteries are ludicrous and borderline nonsensical, but the top-notch, stylish voice work smooths out all the rough edges and makes these stories delightful. Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury have perfect chemistry--like radio's answer to William Powell and Myrna Loy--and the supporting actors are always great, too. Steve is back as a former reporter rather than graphic designer, Temple is suavely elegant and Charlie has been restored as the faithful retainer. Thankfully, Durbridge seems to have remembered who and what Paul and Steve actually are. Durbridge's forte is radio and TV serials, but I find him mediocre in novel form. Since I already know the radio play, there wasn't much new although I did learn Charlie is a regular listener to Woman's Hour. Pretending I hadn't heard the superior radio-play, I'd give it 3 stars; otherwise it's 2 stars. Jan 20, Littleadele rated it it was amazing Shelves: paul- temple. Those are the times when I listen to, and enjoy, Paul Temple. This was the first Paul Temple mystery that I have heard. It certainly won't br the last. I particularly enjoyed the full cast performance. Tongue in cheek? BBC Radio have Paul Temple and the Margo Mystery wonderful old plays which have been resurected and this is one of them. Great story despite the laughably outdated attitudes and some great performances by the actors. Unfortunately the editing of the individual recorded segments is terrible: almost every fade out starts too early - while a character is still speaking - and the last couple of words are lost. Given the large number of separate recorded segments involved you are continually reminded of this ineptness, and it spoils the end result. From start to finish this keeps you guessing. Takes you on a journey that makes you want to keep listening. These are wonderful classics. So funny you will laugh out loud. The way Paul speaks to his wife is hilarious. Philip Highlight Paul Temple - Wikipedia For thirty years the fictional crime novelist and detective Paul Temple, together with his Fleet Street journalist wife Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC Radio's most popular series. They inhabited a sophisticated world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Paul's help with his latest tricky case. Flying home from a lecture tour of America, Paul Temple encounters Mike Langdon who is seeking to persuade his employer's spoilt daughter Julie to give up her boyfriend, pop-singer Tony Wyman. Meeting Paul at the airport, Steve is drugged and kidnapped. She is released without harm - but mysteriously in possession of a coat, bearing the label 'Margo'. As Mike seeks Paul's help, the Temples enter into a dangerous web of lies and murder. “where a good crime C r i m e can be had by all” c h r o n i c l e Issue #242 MArch 2006 AUTHOR OF THE MONTH Skeleton Man: A Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee novel Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. The simple kid nailed for the crime is related to a former colleague. Proving the kid’s innocence requires finding the remains of one of 172 people whose bodies were scattered over the Grand Canyon in an epic airline disaster 50 years ago. One of those passengers, a diamond dealer, had an attaché case containing a fortune in diamonds handcuffed to his wrist. Now his daughter is also seeking his body, and so is a most unpleasant fellow who is willing to kill to make sure she doesn’t succeed. These two tense tales collide deep in the canyon at the place where an old man died trying to build a cult-reviving reverence for the Hopi guardian of the Underworld. It is a race to the finish in a thunderous monsoon storm to see who will be brought to justice and who will finally unearth the Skeleton Man (Pb 19.95). FI 1643U Paths of Gloryby Jeffrey Archer Some people have dreams that are so magnificent that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. People like Christopher Columbus, Isaac Newton, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Edison, Nancy Astor, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hilary and Neil Armstrong—their unparalleled success has made their stories into legend. But what if one man had such a dream, and once he‘d achieved it, there was no proof that he had fulfilled his ambition? Jeffrey Archer‘s new novel, Paths of Glory, is the story of such a man—George Mallory. Born in 1886, he was a brilliant student who became part of the Bloomsbury Group at Cambridge in the early twentieth century and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. After the war, he married, had three children, and would have spent the rest of his life as a schoolteacher, but for his love of mountain climbing. Mallory once told a reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, ―because it is there.‖ On his third try in 1924, at age thirty-seven, he was last seen four hundred feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, ever reached the summit. FI 1644U The Chase by Clive Cussler April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby.

Five translations (three German and two Dutch) of Agatha Christie’s first detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles are analysed. Using the theories by Itamar Even-Zohar (Polysystem Theory) and Gideon Toury (Translation Norms), the different approaches translators have taken to the text are examined and their translation decisions explained by looking at the status and position translations from English, detective stories as such, and the writer Agatha Christie had in the country and at the time these translations were published.
