They inhabit a sophisticated, well-dressed world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, where the women are chic and the men still wear cravats. The case this time involves Dr Conrad's daughter Betty, who has disappeared from her finishing school in Bavaria. Paul is invited by the police to go over there to help trace the missing girl. Initially, though, even he is baffled, since the only clue to the mystery is an unusual cocktail stick found in her bedroom. Can Paul work it out? I have focussed in terms of listening on the "Peter Coke" "Marjorie Westbury" dramatisations, which I have to admit have been both atmospheric and enthralling. This in particular took me back in time to the 50s ok I only saw 3 months of the 50s, but remember as a child watching many 50s programs. Funnily enough Pater Coke pronounced Cook, not to be confused with the Pete Cook from Pete and Dud sounds a lot like Francis Matthewsalthough I suppose that should be the other was around really. This story focusses on the disappearance of a Doctor's daughter from her finishing school in Germany, and the chaos that ensues. Various people get dragged in to the mystery before Paul and Steve fight their way through the red herrings, outright lies and the murder attempts to a final solution. However for some I know that it will seem both a little sexist and maybe Paul Temple and the Conrad Case in other ways. View all 4 comments. Nov 22, MaggyGray rated it really liked it Shelves: autormy-books-in Mein Lieblingsfall - auch deshalb, weil er teilweise in Bayern spielt. Paul Temple goes to Bavaria, and amazingly, most people there appear to be English or speak remarkably good English. Unfortunately, no big car crash but at least there are few bombs to make up for that. May 13, Steven rated it liked it Shelves: audiolibrarymystery. Well, re-listened anyway. Entertaining lightweight mystery - good clean fun and reading. The characterizations aren't particularly believable but I don't think they are meant to be. Nice red herring thrown in to the mix as well to put you off the scent of the real culprit. Jun 25, Beth rated it really liked it Shelves: audio-books. These radio serials are always entertaining! It was rather promising Paul Temple and the Conrad Case interesting. After all the Temples visit Germany and everyone tries to hush up the disappearance of a young girl because no one wants to be talked about or to have the name of his establishment disgraced - which may or may not be a pretty accurate statement of the so called Zeitgeist back then. That was until after nearly two Paul Temple and the Conrad Case to three quater through the story there came the motiv, which was - yet again - drugs. First of all it was added almost as if on an afterthought. And second of all: I would not even know where to buy them or whom to ask and the Temples seem to bust one drug smugling ring after another Were drugs even that popular back then? Fact is: the more I hear of those the more I crave a crime story where the people murder because of a personal motive and not because Paul Temple and the Conrad Case want to gain money, more money and even more money Psychological reasoning might be a part of our Zeitgeist, but slowly but surely I find it rather lacking in those stories. A crime novelist and detective, the gentlemanly Temple solved numerous crimes with the help of Steve Trent, a Fleet Street journalist who later became his wife. Adventures Of Paul Temple Paul Temple is a fictional character created by English writer Francis Durbridge. Temple is a professional author of crime fiction and an amateur private detective. With his wife Louise, affectionately known as 'Steve' in reference to her journalistic pen name 'Steve Trent', he solves whodunnit crimes through subtle, humorously articulated deduction. Always the gentleman, the strongest expletive he employs is by Timothy. Paul Temple was a professional novelist. While he possessed no formal training as a detective, his background in constructing crime plots for his Paul Temple and the Conrad Case enabled him to apply deductive reasoning to solve cases whose solution had eluded Scotland Yard. Over the course of each case, Temple eschewed formal interviews or other police techniques, in favour of casual conversations with suspects and witnesses. Yet even this informal style of investigation invariably precipitated attempts by the suspects to hamper him, through traps, ambushes, even assassination attempts. Surviving these, Temple would arrange a cocktail party or similar social event at which he unmasked the perpetrator. Here, Paul explained why certain events in the serial took place, which of these had been red herringsand which had been genuine clues. Some elements of the plot had already been explained during the Paul Temple and the Conrad Case, while others were occasionally never fully explained, due to limitations of time. The Paul Temple characters and formula were developed in a succession of BBC radio serials broadcast between andwith several voice actors portraying the Temples. The longest-running team, and the most popular with audiences, was Peter Coke pronounced Cooke [2] and Marjorie Westbury, Paul Temple and the Conrad Case starred together in every serial made between and — and Marjorie Westbury also co-starred as Steve Temple in every serial aired between and The radio series was a collaboration between writer Francis Durbridge and BBC producer Martyn C Webster, both of whom worked on every one of the radio broadcasts aired over the thirty years from to Durbridge was still at college when he approached Webster, who then was with the BBC's regional service in the Midlands, with his proposal for a mystery series about a gentleman detective. The introductory and closing music for the majority of the long-running series was Coronation Scotcomposed by Vivian Ellisthough the earliest serials those aired prior to December used an excerpt from Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

“where a good crime C r i m e can be had by all” c h r o n i c l e Issue #242 MArch 2006 AUTHOR OF THE MONTH Skeleton Man: A Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee novel Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. The simple kid nailed for the crime is related to a former colleague. Proving the kid’s innocence requires finding the remains of one of 172 people whose bodies were scattered over the Grand Canyon in an epic airline disaster 50 years ago. One of those passengers, a diamond dealer, had an attaché case containing a fortune in diamonds handcuffed to his wrist. Now his daughter is also seeking his body, and so is a most unpleasant fellow who is willing to kill to make sure she doesn’t succeed. These two tense tales collide deep in the canyon at the place where an old man died trying to build a cult-reviving reverence for the Hopi guardian of the Underworld. It is a race to the finish in a thunderous monsoon storm to see who will be brought to justice and who will finally unearth the Skeleton Man (Pb 19.95). Other titles in this excellent series starring two Navajo policemen include: Blessing Way, Coyote Waits (16.95), Dance Hall of the Dead (19.95), Dark Wind, The Fallen Man, Finding Moon, The Fly on the Wall, The Ghostway, Hunting Badger, Listening Woman, People of Darkness, Scared Clowns, The Sinister Pig, Skinwalkers, Talking God, A Thief of Time and The Wailing Wind (all 18.95 unless otherwise indicated).

It has certainly been a month of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ here! We were so sad to hear the recent news of the sad loss of French singer and actress Juliet Gréco who was recently seen in Whirpool and The Big Gamble on Talking Pictures TV. Also, our own dear Dame Diana Rigg DBE sadly passed away recently; there is a tribute to her on page 12. Good news on the ‘lost film can’ front – we’ve found another episode of No Hiding Place on 16mm from a viewer’s private collection! Lots of interesting short films have also been brought forward – so do keep on checking your lofts, sheds and under the bed…. I’m very proud of our new DVD release this month - it’s a charming film with George Cole and Prunella Scales:The Ghost of Greville Lodge. A wonderful film for all the family and a nice gift. Noel was the Executive Producer on the film and we have very fond memories as a family of being on set with George and Prunella. I was actually supposed to play one of the parts, but alas I didn’t make it through to the final audition! It’s now presented with optional subtitles for the very first time and just £10 with FREE UK postage. Details on pages 2 and 3. The second project I’ve been working on this month is a wonderful AUDIO BOOK of SCROOGE narrated by dear George Cole himself.

FI 1643U Paths of Gloryby Jeffrey Archer Some people have dreams that are so magnificent that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. People like Christopher Columbus, Isaac Newton, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Edison, Nancy Astor, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hilary and Neil Armstrong—their unparalleled success has made their stories into legend. But what if one man had such a dream, and once he‘d achieved it, there was no proof that he had fulfilled his ambition? Jeffrey Archer‘s new novel, Paths of Glory, is the story of such a man—George Mallory. Born in 1886, he was a brilliant student who became part of the Bloomsbury Group at Cambridge in the early twentieth century and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. After the war, he married, had three children, and would have spent the rest of his life as a schoolteacher, but for his love of mountain climbing. Mallory once told a reporter that he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, ―because it is there.‖ On his third try in 1924, at age thirty-seven, he was last seen four hundred feet from the top. His body was found in 1999, and it remains a mystery whether he and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, ever reached the summit. FI 1644U The Chase by Clive Cussler April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby.

Abstract Rooted in the field of Descriptive Translation Studies, the thesis combines such different areas as (corpus) linguistics, literary, cultural, media and socio-historical studies of the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. Five translations (three German and two Dutch) of Agatha Christie’s first detective novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles are analysed. Using the theories by Itamar Even-Zohar (Polysystem Theory) and Gideon Toury (Translation Norms), the different approaches translators have taken to the text are examined and their translation decisions explained by looking at the status and position translations from English, detective stories as such, and the writer Agatha Christie had in the country and at the time these translations were published.
