September 2013 Newsletter Editorial

With the memory of the World Athletics Championships still fresh in our minds, the performance of the South African team may not have been the best ever on the medal table, but it certainly was a very solid performance by the world’s best, to encourage and motivate all to participate and set personal goals. On the local front, Western Province is currently still in the grip of the cold and wet winter that has an effect on all the events.

The Cross Country season ended with some good performances at the Western Province Championships. One of the highlights during the Cross Country league season, which ended in August, was the fierce competition between the junior categories. The excellent performances of the youngsters from the Kids Development program was a highlight for the season. Some good talent, from the provincial development initiative, was selected. A team of 55 members were selected to represent WPA at the SA National Championships in Potchefstroom on Saturday 14 September. We wish all the participating athletes the very best for the event.

On the weekend of 21 & 22 September the Marathon takes place. The race is organised by WPA in partnership with the . This year the race sees the start move from to the Forecourt. Registration will take place at the Cape Town Stadium, Players Mixing Zone, on Friday 20 September and Saturday 21 September. The weekends’ activities include the Cape Town 5 x 4.2km Relay on Saturday at 14:00 and the Cape Town 5km Fun Run at 16:00. Pre entries for the marathon and 10km close on 9 September 2013. Please note that the Cape Town Marathon is the WP Marathon Championships and both the marathon and the 10km form part of the Coke-a-Cola league events.

The Track & Field commission is currently in their winter program and we trust that a good season lies ahead for 2013/14, commencing in October.

Early next month also sees the WPA AGM, where office-bearers for the next two years will be elected. The list of nominees will be sent out to the clubs soon. It is encouraging that clubs have applied their minds to the nominations. It bodes well for the future of the sport.

RACE WALKING

WPA along with the WPA Race-walking Commission held their 3 rd Race-walking Grand Prix for the year at Youngsfield on 3 August. In order to attract walkers (and runners) who are not confident about being able to walk within the “legal” requirements, we decided to try something new. All novice walkers were identified, given a crash-course demo before the event and were exempted from disqualification during the event. The Technical Officials were given a list of names of the novices and offered tips and encouragement in the event of any infringements.

The event was so successful that we will definitely continue to do this at future events. So, if you have never walked at a Youngsfield Grand Prix but have participated in League Walks and other fun walks, come and try out your talents at our next event on 7 September 2013. Novices who participated at the previous event will now be judged along with the other entrants.

We had a field of 79 entrants of which 25 took part in the various development races. Another first was that electronic timing was used for these 5km, 3km and 1km races, also with great success. This event must have had a record number of women participating in the 30km event, with CJ Dunn (Spartan Harriers) finishing in 3:37:27 and earning herself the Gold medal, while Frans Marais ( AC) finished in a time of 3:36:20 to take Gold for the men in the 30km event.

In the 20km race, Robert de Monk (Acsis VOB) exhibited excellent technique for his first time at a Grand Prix, earning himself the Gold medal in a time of 2:08:57 with Fundiswa Sandi (Ravensmead) taking the ladies Gold in the 20k in a time of 2:23:05. The 10km race was won by Keith Reynolds (Bellville AC) in an excellent time of 55:47 which was also a new WPA Masters Record in the M45 age category, while Gail Williams (Spartan Harriers) took the Gold in the Ladies 10km race in 1:04:47. The Junior Men 10km was won by Malakhiwe Poni (WCSS) in 57:59 and our Junior Ladies was Sisipho Sokrowa (WCSS) in 1:15:03 while the Youth Men 10km was won by Carel van der Merwe (Arcelor Mittal) in 56:02 and Youth Ladies winner was Nomsa Melamane (WCSS) in 1:08:43.

We hope to see many more Novices join us for the next Grand Prix at Youngsfield where 2013 Moscow IAAF World Championship athletes Marc Mundell (2012 Olympic Team) and Labogang Shange (2013 African Race Walking Champion) regularly participate to walk their selection times, elevating our venue status, for which we are grateful and honoured.

In closing, with the upcoming WPA AGM, the WPA Race Walking Commission would like to thank all their members for their time and dedication over the past year and thank you to all the WPA Technical Officials for the priority they offer to Race-walking despite their busy schedules. Your efforts are truly appreciated by all the Athletes.

CELTIC HARRIERS

54 th Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km Road Race

Celtic Harriers is pleased to present the 54 th running of the Don Lock Memorial 8km & 5km road race on Sunday, 27 October 2012.

The Don Lock race was started in 1960 to commemorate the death of our club member who was killed in a road accident.

The start will be in Imam Haron Road (formerly Lansdowne Road) in front of Brookside (Villager’s Rugby Club). The 8km starts at 07h30 and the 5km Fun Run at 07h45. The route is the traditional fast and flat “5 miler”, and runs past Common. The finish will be on the Villager’s “B” field.

Whilst the Don Lock has historically attracted some extremely impressive athletes, Celtic Harriers is keen to encourage runners of all ages, skill and experience to participate in either event.

The list of past winners of the Don Lock reads like a "Who’s Who" in WP middle-distance athletics. Of the men: Willie Olivier (who won the first nine races), Ferdie la Grange, Danie Malan, De Villiers Lamprecht, Julian Marsay, Greg Liefeldt, Peter Williams, Marius-Hugo Schlechter, John September, Makhosonke Fika and Lindikhaya Mthangayi. The ladies list is no less impressive: Judy Ryan, Isavel Roche-Kelly, Janet Grieve, Elana van Zyl, Monica Drogemoller, Jenifer Bam, Juliet Prowse, Esme Solomons, Nolene Conrad and Thuliswa Nonkonyana, amongst others.

The women’s course record is held by Elana Meyer at 25 min 35 secs, and the men’s record of 22min 51sec is held by John September. We encourage you to join us and run in the footsteps of these great athletes.

We hope to see you there!

EDGEMEAD RUNNERS

21 st Anniversary Function

During the early nineties a large number of “social” runners were present in the ever growing Edgemead area. With no running club within the vicinity an advert was placed in the community newspaper by Patrick Fear regarding establishing a running club in this area. Edgemead Runners was officially established in 1992 and in our inaugural year a steering committee, under the leadership of Patrick, attended to all club matters. Over the years the club membership has grown substantially and currently exceeds 350 members.

2013 is indeed a very important year for Edgemead Runners as it’s our 21st anniversary. This milestone occasion was celebrated at a lavish gala evening on Saturday, 10 August 2013. It was good to see so many of the ‘old’ faces and to have all 8 chairpersons past and present in attendance is a huge tribute to a club that had spawn great friendships and bonds throughout its 21 years. A time to share happy memories, and to reflect on what a great club we have! For some the "fitness" fades with time, but the "friendship" lasts forever! The evening was a huge success and well organised. A big thank you to past & present members for attending & supporting us on this special occasion in the club’s history!

Jive Women’s Day Challenge

On Friday, 9 August 2013, Edgemead Runners once again hosted The Jive Women’s Day Challenge 5km & 10km Run / Walk. The event a huge success, thanks to the participation of many women, children … and non-women (“men dressed appropriately for the occasion”).

The Edgemead Ward Councillor James Vos fired the gun to set off the 10km runners at 8:00 from the Bellville Stadium. The 5km Run/Walk started at 8h15. As the 5km participants set off, the fastest 10km runners had already finished the loop past Willow Bridge Mall, and on their way back past the stadium, were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd outside the stadium.

This year the race once again boasted well-known local runners, such as Nomvuyisi Seti, Khanya Mateyisi, Candice Hall, Mariette Strauss, Elmarie Coetzee and Edgemead Runners very own Sandra van Graan! The race was won by Nomvuyisi Seti in a fantastic time of 37:04, with Khanya Mateyisi in second position in a time of 37:38 and Linley Holmes third in a time of 38:47.

All finishers in both distances received a medal and all pre-entries received a lovely pink commemorative t-shirt. After the race, local Shaboom entertained the runners leading up to prize giving. The prize giving was compeered by Harold Berman & ably assisted by Edgemead Runners club members Lindy Matzke & Ryan Warner.

The Red Cross Children’s Foundation was the 2013 charity beneficiary & a cheque for R10, 000.00 was handed over to a representative of the Foundation. Race results are published on www.wpa.org.za

SANLAM ROAD RUNNING CLUB

Well done, Johann! Saturday on the slopes of Johann is ready for on the climb to the top FROM WYNAND BEUKES, ROAD RUNNING CLUB

Johann Claassen made history on Saturday when he conquered the gruelling Puffer, since he is the first member of the Sanlam Road Running Club to accomplish this outstanding feat from to the Waterfront. Johann says the slogan of the 80 kilometre race is a summarisation of it all: “Running in heaven, feeling like hell!”

“It never crossed my mind in the past that I will have the nerve to tackle a tough race like this one. It is without doubt the most difficult but also the most beautiful race I ever did.” Johann says he was on the waiting list for partaking in the race for which an ultra is a qualifier. On Monday, less than a week before the race, he had received a call with the news that he can compete.

They were transported by bus to Cape Point on Saturday morning, where they started at 5.30 to venture upon Red Hill, Vlakkenberg, Table Mountain end . . . .

It was difficult for Johann in the region of Silver Mine because he did not know the route. The toughest part is from Constantia Nek to Maclear’s Beacon and down Platteklip Gorge. He experienced lots of cramping up the mountain. A friend supported him from Constantia Nek and he finished in 12:58:00.

”The route is so beautiful and I saw so many parts of the mountain that I was not aware of. The most wonderful aspect of the race is the camaraderie. Everyone talks to one another and helps with direction. The support for each runner from the spectators is unbelievable. The race has the best feeding tables in the world. There were more than enough to pick from.”

Already, Johann is considering participation again next year. After all: “One has to do 3 races for a permanent number . . .”

The Forecourt start and finish brings a slight change to the route, with 42.2km runners exiting Green Point down Somerset Road and along the Fan Walk and the 10km runners doing a loop through the V&A Waterfront. Coaching & Continuous Education

COACHES

IAAF/WPA Kids Athletics Course – 24/25 August 2013 – Parow North

In continuing their commitment to developing and improving the coaching base, Western Province Athletics hosted the first of a series of 4 IAAF/WPA Kids Athletics Courses, to be held before the end of 2013, at Parow North athletics track and clubhouse.

This Course is an essential element of the IAAF Level I Coaching Certificate, and provides an ideal base for developing beginner coaches to work with children in a structured, fun and safe environment.

Workbooks were introduced as an additional element to the Course for the first time, and provided an extremely good tool in supplementing the theory and practical components. The coaches were able to experience practical elements personally, in addition to having the opportunity to put a group of children, from Ravensmead, through a Kids Athletics event.

KIDS ATHLETICS

Western Province Athletics hosted a handover of the new running kit for all the clubs that are currently on the Kids Athletics Programme. Most of the clothing that was provided previously to the juniors, two years back, was very well worn and outgrown by many of the youngsters. The kids looked amazing and were encouraged and motivated to perform well and placed the programme on an even higher level.

The Cross Country season went well for our juniors, we witnessed them excelling at the Western Province Athletics Cross Country Championships, dominating the top ten. The weather was very cold and wet at UWC but that did not discourage the juniors, they knew they had to finish what they started from the very first league in order to claim the glory.

Below are the clubs that their juniors were awarded.
