Editorial Editorial www.wpa.org.za September 2013 Newsletter Editorial With the memory of the World Athletics Championships still fresh in our minds, the performance of the South African team may not have been the best ever on the medal table, but it certainly was a very solid performance by the world’s best, to encourage and motivate all to participate and set personal goals. On the local front, Western Province is currently still in the grip of the cold and wet winter that has an effect on all the events. The Cross Country season ended with some good performances at the Western Province Championships. One of the highlights during the Cross Country league season, which ended in August, was the fierce competition between the junior categories. The excellent performances of the youngsters from the Kids Development program was a highlight for the season. Some good talent, from the provincial development initiative, was selected. A team of 55 members were selected to represent WPA at the SA National Championships in Potchefstroom on Saturday 14 September. We wish all the participating athletes the very best for the event. On the weekend of 21 & 22 September the Cape Town Marathon takes place. The race is organised by WPA in partnership with the City of Cape Town. This year the Cape Town Marathon race sees the start move from Adderley Street to the Cape Town Stadium Forecourt. Registration will take place at the Cape Town Stadium, Players Mixing Zone, on Friday 20 September and Saturday 21 September. The weekends’ activities include the Cape Town 5 x 4.2km Relay on Saturday at 14:00 and the Cape Town 5km Fun Run at 16:00. Pre entries for the marathon and 10km close on 9 September 2013. Please note that the Cape Town Marathon is the WP Marathon Championships and both the marathon and the 10km form part of the Coke-a-Cola league events. The Track & Field commission is currently in their winter program and we trust that a good season lies ahead for 2013/14, commencing in October. Early next month also sees the WPA AGM, where office-bearers for the next two years will be elected. The list of nominees will be sent out to the clubs soon. It is encouraging that clubs have applied their minds to the nominations. It bodes well for the future of the sport. Running Regards Jakes Jacobs CCCommissionCommission News CROSS COUNTRY Western Province Athletics would like to congratulate all the athletes who will represent Western Province at the SA Cross Country Championships taking place in Potchefstroom on 14 September. In order to attract walkers (and runners) who are not confident about being able to walk within the “legal” requirements, we decided to try something new. All novice walkers were identified, given a crash-course demo before the event and were exempted from disqualification during the event. The Technical Officials were given a list of names of the novices and offered tips and encouragement in the event of any infringements. The event was so successful that we will definitely continue to do this at future events. So, if you have never walked at a Youngsfield Grand Prix but have participated in League Walks and other fun walks, come and try out your talents at our next event on 7 September 2013. Novices who participated at the previous event will now be judged along with the other entrants. We had a field of 79 entrants of which 25 took part in the various development races. Another first was that electronic timing was used for these 5km, 3km and 1km races, also with great success. This event must have had a record number of women participating in the 30km event, with CJ Dunn (Spartan Harriers) finishing in 3:37:27 and earning herself the Gold medal, while Frans Marais (Brackenfell AC) finished in a time of 3:36:20 to take Gold for the men in the 30km event. In the 20km race, Robert de Monk (Acsis VOB) exhibited excellent technique for his first time at a Grand Prix, earning himself the Gold medal in a time of 2:08:57 with Fundiswa Sandi (Ravensmead) taking the ladies Gold in the 20k in a time of 2:23:05. The 10km race was won by Keith Reynolds (Bellville AC) in an excellent time of 55:47 which was also a new WPA Masters Record in the M45 age category, while Gail Williams (Spartan Harriers) took the Gold in the Ladies 10km race in 1:04:47. The Junior Men 10km was won by Malakhiwe Poni (WCSS) in 57:59 and our Junior Ladies was Sisipho Sokrowa (WCSS) in 1:15:03 while the Youth Men 10km was won by Carel van der Merwe (Arcelor Mittal) in 56:02 and Youth Ladies winner was Nomsa Melamane (WCSS) in 1:08:43. We hope to see many more Novices join us for the next Grand Prix at Youngsfield where 2013 Moscow IAAF World Championship athletes Marc Mundell (2012 Olympic Team) and Labogang Shange (2013 African Race Walking Champion) regularly participate to walk their selection times, elevating our venue status, for which we are grateful and honoured. In closing, with the upcoming WPA AGM, the WPA Race Walking Commission would like to thank all their members for their time and dedication over the past year and thank you to all the WPA Technical Officials for the priority they offer to Race-walking despite their busy schedules. Your efforts are truly appreciated by all the Athletes. TRACK & FIELD Western Province Athletics would like to express huge congratulations to Zandri Bailey who represented South Africa at the African Junior Championships in Mauritius from the 29 August 2013 to 1 September 2013. Zandri won the bronze medal with a personal best throw of 46.30m. Club News LOADS OF FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY AT THIS YEAR’S OUTSURANCE 94.5 KFM GUN RUN! Western Province Athletics www.wpa.org.za November 2012 Newsletter EditoEditorialrialrialrial At last we can welcome summer after a very long cold and wet winter season. Unfortunately a few of the events hosted during October were heavily affected by the wind and rain. The weather at last is starting to change and the participating numbers are starting to increase. The highlight on the October calendar was most certainly the OUTsurance Gun Run, hosted by Atlantic Athletic Club. The participating numbers exceeded all expectations and the event was hosted in perfect conditions along the Atlantic Seaboard. WPA is looking forward to November’s two big events, namely, Landmarks Half Marathon, followed by the Mr Price Marathon and Half Marathon. The ever popular Wednesday evening events commence from 28 November. The quality of these events, hosted by the different clubs, must encourage temporary licenced runners to participate in more events with the ultimate goal of bringing them into the WPA affiliated club structure. The new Track and Field season is in full swing, an urgent appeal goes out to all WPA clubs to please inform and promote track & field events to their athletes. WPA is lagging behind with quality performances across the board specifically in all the senior levels of participation in Cross Country and Road Running. The lack of a proper coaching structure from National level down to the provinces and clubs is resulting in slow times and very few quality performances. The quality of the athletes within WPA can change as soon as we get these athletes back on track in all the middle distances.

Western Province Athletics www.wpa.org.za December 2011 Newsletter Editorial A monumental year in Western Province Athletics' history is drawing to a close. This year has witnessed great changes in sport in the country, with the recent Sports Indaba setting the path for South African sport going into the future. It also witnessed major changes in the sport of athletics. Far from the turmoil of 2009, 2011 was the year in which the sport started to perform, WPA was central to this. It is necessary to take a couple of steps back into history and remember the role which WPA played in bringing about the changes in the administration of the sport after the scandals which wracked ASA in 2009. But it was not just in the role of activist which WPA excelled. When called upon to assist, we have been ready and able to do so. Such that ASA and other provinces have been able to call on ASA to assist with personnel and equipment when needed. When WPA was asked to step in to organise a track meeting for ASA, we did not hesitate. And we have not been short on providing leadership to the sport on a national level. Not many provinces have been able to boast having the ASA, SAMA and USSA Athletics Presidents all being members of their province. The year saw WPA hosting three internationally recoginised events, in the inaugural CAA African Cross Country Championships in March, the Cape Town Marathon and the SA 50km Race Walking Championships. In addition, Cape Town also played host to national track and field events, with the Yellow Pages Series and the Yellow Pages Interprovincial meetings both being held at Bellville.
