DA VINCI EXHIBITION On Tuesday, 4 February, 12 WGHS teachers, representing the Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy and Physical Science departments, visited the “Da Vinci – The Genius” exhibition at the V & A Waterfront. The exhibition is touring the world and we were privileged to be able to visit it in Cape Town. While many people think of Leonardo Da Vinci as an artist, he was also an inventor, a scientist, an architect, and an engineer and the exhibition covered these areas of his work. While all of us were impressed by the life-size HD recreation of the Last Supper and the extensive section focusing on the secrets of the Mona Lisa, each of us found areas of particular interest. For Maths teachers there was the depth of the mathematical detail in the Vitruvian Man while the Science teachers marveled at the flying machines and the first concepts of a car. There was much to see that touched on our other teaching subjects – from Natural Science and Geography to Art and Italian! The exhibition was a wonderful way to spend two hours and a good reminder that we as teachers need to make time to enjoy our subjects. On 24 February, WBHS hosted a Careers Evening to market some of the many available opportunities. The WBHS hall was filled with loud chatter and excited conversation over career choices. “What do I want to study? Where? For how long do? Do I even want to study? And if not, what do I want to do?”. For younger grades, it was about looking at what they should be aiming at, but for Matrics it was more serious. The deadlines for applications are looming and informed decisions need to be made. This very worthwhile evening helped many students to make them.

CAPSTONE CAMP Capstone campers spent the Valentine’s weekend at Rocklands campsite in Simon’s Town to celebrate the one who made the ultimate gesture of love: Jesus Christ. The theme for the camp was ”In the Wild”, the purpose being to encourage students to celebrate God freeing them from the cages of the world. There was much fun to be had over the weekend, including diving for the ‘key to freedom’, memory verses and wild warcry competitions. The worship sessions led by the band featuring musicians from churches all over Cape Town were the highlights. Invariably this led to dancing to ‘the monkey’, an excessively athletic and fun dance routine. Darren, the guest speaker, ran sessions on the importance of recognizing the freedoms we have been given, and we were given practical spiritual advice to apply to everyday situations. Glenn and Vicky Cook from The People’s Church also joined in on the wild action and facilitated discussions on how to build strong Some of the girls who were at the Capstone camp. relationships with those around us as we Standing: P Mzalisi, D Mac Arthur, K Ducroq, S Mtegha, T Kendon, S Wiegand, D Munro, A Fagan, grow spiritually.
