WEDNESDAY – JULY 1 – PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK – RIDGE TRAIL – 5-E MW Hills in first half. Lunch at Cascade Falls. Flat, easy second half. Leave 10:00 AM. From I-695, take exit 11 onto I-95S toward DC. Take I-195 toward BWI. Take exit 3 onto US 1 south. Turn right immediately onto South St. and immediate left into park. Go to stop sign. [email protected] MHA WEDNESDAY – JULY 1 – TO ANNAPOLIS ROCKS – 13H/S This out-and-back hike offers two impressive views of Greenbrier Lake -- one as we’re swooping down on it from within the park, and the second as we’re overlooking it from our lunch spot atop Annapolis Rocks. The hike has about 2,000 feet of ascent (including two 500 foot climbs), contains a number of rocky sections of trail, has no stream crossings to speak of, and has two crossings on the I-70 footbridge. Our pace will be moderate (that is, average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). LEAVE: 7:45 AM from Howard County Fairgrounds parking area. MHA WEDNESDAY – JULY 1 – LITTLE PATUXENT RIVER – 8E Tweener “Sneaker” hike (boots are superfluous) of eight easy, figure-8 miles on the paved trails of Columbia/Ellicott City along the Little Patuxent River and around Centennial Lake. No significant hills or stream crossings. Bring water, lunch and sunscreen. Possible ice cream stop near end. MEET:10 A.M. Parking Lot of Northfield Elementary School. .From US-29 northbound, take Exit 22 to MD-100, then promptly exit from MD-100 to Long Gate Parkway. From Long Gate Parkway, turn left at the traffic light on MD-103 (Montgomery Road) and proceed over US-29 to St. John’s Lane. Turn left on St. John’s lane just past the Mormon Church, then right on Northfield Road. Follow Northfield Road to its end (a half mile or so) at Northfield Elementary School (9125 Northfield Road). From US-29 southbound, exit at MD-103 (Exit 23). MHA WEDNESDAY – JULY 8 – PATUXENT RIVER PARK – 9M Circuit hike of approximately 9 miles over rolling wooded terrain in Jug Bay Natural Area of Patuxent River Park in Prince George’s County. Exit at I-70 Exit 94 Security Blvd. Stay in the right lane and turn right at the Ingleside Ave. traffic light. Cross the bridge and turn right at the top of the bridge (just before the Franklintown sign). Proceed one block to the stop sign at Franklintown Rd. and turn left. FRIDAY-SUNDAY – JULY 17-19 – SWALLOW FALLS CAR CAMP Come and enjoy Maryland’s most beautiful waterfalls. Second time the club has offered this trip. Car camp for two nights at in Garrett County, Maryland. Enjoy hiking and swimming at Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor State Park. There is a limit of 12 people, registration must be made in advance, and those registering must pay a non-refundable deposit in order that the needed campground spots can be reserved. SATURDAY – JULY 18 – POND RUN-HALF MOON LOOKOUT/WHITE ROCKS, GREAT NORTH Mt., VA-W.VA. – 15SLength: 15 miles; Elevation gain: 1600 ft. Hike on Pond Run Trail crossing stream a total of 9 times to overlook at Half Moon Lookout, and White Rocks. Specatular views of Trout Run Valley between Mill Mountain and Long Mountain. MHA WEDNESDAY – JULY 22 – / – 10M Hike approximately 10 miles on the trails of Cromwell Valley Park and Loch Raven Reservoir. Pace averages 2.5 miles per hour. MEET: 10:00 A.M. at the Willow Grove Farms parking area, 2175 Cromwell Bridge Road, at Cromwell Valley Park. Take I-695 Exit 29 east on Cromwell Bridge Road for approximately 1 mile to the second left entrance into park.. LEADER: Ron Cully (410) 956-2010 / [email protected]. MHA SATURDAY – JULY 25 – PVSP: OELLA TO PICKALL – 9M This 9-mile hike over unmarked and unmaintained trails goes up and down hardwood hillsides, along the defunct Oella Mill Race, past the ruins of the Union Dam, under the Rt. 40 Bridge, and over a few small streams. Lunch is in a park pavilion. Total ascent is less than 1,000 feet, with a few moderate hills. Our pace will be moderate (average speed while moving: 2.5 to 3 MPH). We’ll do part of the hike in Rockburn (Howard County Park) and part across the road in Patapsco State Park. SATURDAY – AUGUST 15 – CATOCTIN HIKE, SWIM & PICNIC – 10M MHA We’ll start our hike at the Hunting Creek Picnic area and do a 10 mile loop that will include Wolf & Chimney Rocks. After the Misery Trail descent, we’ll head back to the lake for a swim & a pot luck picnic. Scenery is varied open field vistas, river overlooks, ponds, streams and mature forest enclosures. Our pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). Car camp for two nights at Blackwater Falls, enjoy hiking, rock scrambling, swimming in secluded water holes, and just having a good time hanging out. Feel free to bring along a camera. Many sections of trail are rocky, total ascent is 1,500+ feet (including a climb of 500 feet in less than a half mile towards the end of the hike), and lunch will be at Chimney Rock’s spectacular overlook. This is a 15 mile section in the northern tip of the Massanuttens which includes the Elizabeth Furnance area and the “feel the burn” ascent of Sherman Gap. WEDNESDAY – OCTOBER 28 – GAMBRILL STATE PARK – 9H MHA An 8.6 mile circuit hike in Gambrill State Park starting at 1,060’ elevation reaching a high of 1,730’ for a cumulative total of about 2,000’ up and down. There are 5 climbs over 50’ with longest 530’ over 0.57 miles for an average grad- ient of 17.7%. Trails are mostly in good shape and therefore easy. Pace averages 2.5 miles per hour. Take MD-32 either south from I-70 (Exit 80) or west from I-95 (Exit 38B) or west from MD-29 (Exit 16B). Once on MD-32, take Exit 20 for MD-108 east. FRIDAY-SUNDAY – OCT 30 – NOV – 1 EASTERN SHORE CANOE TRIP Arrive Friday afternoon at the Manokin River property on Stewart Neck Road in Princess Anne. There is an option to arrive early and have dinner provided by Adrenaline High. Saturday will be shuttled over to Kings Creek and will paddle back to the Manokin River property approximately 9 miles. This trip can be added to by paddling into Princess Anne. Will go right under an Eagles nest. Sunday we will do an out and back paddle up Jones Creek which also has an Eagles nest with two babies and two adults. An alternate paddle could go out to the Manokin River to Raccoon Point the latter is more open water. The former is a more winding protected paddle. It’s your groups choice. SATURDAY – OCTOBER 31 – CAMP ROOSEVELT AREA, MASSANUTTEN MOUNTAINS, VA. – 9S or 18S Length: 9.5 or 18 miles; Elevation gain: approximately 3000 ft. In the morning we will hike a 9.5 mile circuit hike on the Stephens Trail and the Massanutten East trail to Kennedy’s Peak returning to Camp Roosevelt. Excellent views east to the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the afternoon, hike out-and- back on the Duncan Hollow Trail and the Gap Creek to Duncan’s Knob. Rock scramble to the top of Duncan’s Knob and enjoy excellent views west to West Virginia. LEAVE: 7:00 AM, Park & Ride, Exit 80, I-70 W and Rt. 32 N. Breakfast stop. Possible dinner stop.
