I-4 Rivalry To Be Highlight Of AAC Season Well football fans, the next conference up is the American Athletic Conference. It consists of 12 schools formed from teams that once competed in Conference-USA, Mid-American, Big 12, Big East, and independent Navy. The Florida connections to this conference are University of Central Florida (UCF) and University of South Florida (USF). The I-4 Rivalry is one of the best in the conference. The 2017 game was epic between the Knights and Bulls. The 2018 seasons begs the question: ‘Can either duplicate the great seasons they had in 2017?’ The UCF Knights finished the 2017 season unbeaten with a bowl win over Auburn. The Knights faithful declared themselves “National Champions”. Did they have a case? I believe they did. Is the system rigged in favor of Power 5 teams? Of course it is. UCF got a lot of ridicule for their bombastic campaign for the self-declared title. Some applauded their efforts for speaking out though. They are not the first to be snubbed. Can UCF repeat? Can tures. USF replace their quarterback? Will Memphis be as strong? Can Navy continue to dominate the ground game? Let’s take a look at the teams for this season.

AAC East Division 2018

1. UCF — It all starts at quarterback and the Knights have a great one returning in McKenzie Milton. He threw for over 4,000 yards and rushed for 600 more in 2017. He has skilled re- ceivers again to throw to. The offensive line returns former Hardee Wildcat, Luke Palmer, wearing number 70 for the Knights. The schedule has UCF playing at FAU, Memphis and USF. Those appear to be the tough games. The out of conference games with North Carolina, Pitt and South Carolina State are all winnable. Prediction: 11-1

2. USF — The Bulls must replace quarterback Quinton Flowers who accounted for nearly 4000 yards of offense in 2017 along with both of their top rushers. The Bulls do have a transfer quarterback coming in from Arizona State along with two solid quarterbacks who battled in the spring. Overall, the Bulls do have some of the conference’s best units at offensive line, de- fensive backs, defensive line and wide receivers. All are ranked in the Top 4 of the 12 teams. The schedule has UCF at home with out of conference games with Georgia Tech and Illinois. Predic- tion: 8-4

3. Temple — Remember the days when the Owls gave away free tickets in the Philly Convenience Stores to bolster their 1,000 to 2,000 fan crowds? That led them to being kicked out of the Big East. Since then, they have improved and should finish third this year in the East Division. Prediction : 7-5

4. Cincinnati — Bearcats have dropped off in recent years. The once proud program will struggle again in 2018. A decent defense and quarterback play should provide a few wins though. Prediction: 4-8

5. UConn — Is it time for Girls basketball? Football season in Stoors has seen its better days. There was a brief time in the Big East when the Huskies actually went to bowl games. Four in a row from 2007 to 2010. Their last bowl appearance was in St. Petersburg in 2015, a 16-10 loss to Marshall. This season doesn’t look promising. Prediction: 1-11

6. East Carolina — Pirates’s program once plundered op- ponents under Steve Logan but has fallen on hard times of late. Scottie Montgomery is the coach on the hot seat in AAC. Pre- diction: 2-10

ACC West Division 2018

1. Memphis — Tigers must replace a quarterback and wide receiver that lit it up in 2017. They have the replacements but will depend on a strong run game until it develops. The Tigers do host Houston and UCF. Prediction : 9-3

2. Houston — A team on the upward swing especially on defense where Kendal Briles is now the defensive coordinator. He adds three Power 5 transfer players to the starting lineup in 2018. Prediction : 9-3

3. Navy — Middies welcome Malcolm Perry to the quar- terback spot. They will do what they always do. Run the ball and run the ball and amass 500 yards a game. Middies get Memphis at home but must go to UCF. Prediction: 8-4

4. Tulane — Willie Fritz is bringing back the Green Wave. Quarterback Jonathan Banks could emerge as one of the confer- ence best in 2018. He has the skill players to help also. The de- fense needs to improve. Prediction: 6-6

5. SMU — Sonny Dykes is back at the helm of the Mus- tangs. He will bring a high-octane offense with a solid defense. Prediction: 6-6

6. Tulsa — Golden Hurricane is looking to improve on their 2-9 campaign in 2017. The defense was porous last year. Their strength will be the offensive line and run game. Prediction : 4- 8

Peavy’s Ponderings By Jonell Peavy Sugar Possum of the late Truman Thomas

It's been a busy two months for me since school has been out for the summer. I've enjoyed the great granddaughters spending part of their summer with me. There was a difference from last summer though. Instead of all three of them staying with me at the same time, they wanted to stay one at a time. It was their decision. I guess to their way of thinking they would get to do more things and go more places if they came by themselves. Guess what? They were right. I had more time to devote to each of them, and each one got to do the things she liked to do best. Miriah, the oldest who will be 12 in December, was the first to stay with me. She stayed eight days and said she is ready to come back again. Brook, the 10-year-old, was next. She stayed 12 days and would have stayed longer but Mom said it was time to come home. She asked Brook, "Have you moved in?" Brook replied, "Yes ma'am." Mom said, "I don't think so." Kayla, the 5-year-old, just went home Saturday. She only stayed four days, but that was a big thing for her. She usually won't stay anywhere unless one of her sisters stays with her. They all like to work in the yard, and I'm always giving them what I call life lessons. When Brook was here she wanted to learn to mow with my push mower. It's hard to crank and you have to take the filter off, spray it with starter fluid, put the filter back on, push the primer button, then pull the rope to crank it. The only thing I had to do for her was check the oil. She learned to do all that without my help, and she said mowing was fun. I bet she won't say it's fun in a few more years. Miriah is learning to do embroidery and sewing. Kayla learned to do her straight stitches. It was her first sewing lesson, but she kept at it. By the time she left to go home she was able to do nice, evenly spaced stitches. School starts in a few days, and I'm already missing their company. Jonell Peavy lives in Avon Park and can be reached at 863-453- 3589.

As Seen From This Side By Jerry “Gray Wolf” Phillips Wauchula

Johnny had to make a quick trip to Atlanta from Albany, Ga. He could almost drive it faster, but he had luck. A seat was avail- able just as he got to the airport. Luck again, window seat meant no one would be asking him to let them out. A quick stop at concessions for a Payday candy bar, his fa- vorite. That would do, skip dinner. He was getting settled as a very large gentleman sat next to him. He had to move his laptop, a few other items and put them in front of him. A short delay at take-off. He leaned back, closed his eyes and relaxed. Ten minutes later he opened his eyes to see this gentleman eating a Payday candy bar. He looked down at his laptop, no Payday candy bar, and there was one bite left when he snatched it out of the man's hand, quickly popping it into his mouth, very confi- dent this guy had stolen his Payday while he took that nap. The man gave him a surprised look but said nothing. Twenty minutes later they landed in Atlanta. His traveling companion got up and off while he collected his things from in front of him. As he lifted his laptop a Payday candy bar slid into the seat. Glancing out the window he saw the man as he looked back shaking his head. Johnny had snatched the man's candy right out of his hand. He hoped he'd never face him again. To his surprise, as his taxi pulled to a stop behind another at the curb, his traveling companion was getting out, going to the same place. He took out the Payday, handing it to him while trying desparately to explain his embarrassment. They parted on good terms and a good laugh. He just couldn't believe it. He stole the candy right out of his mouth. –––––– I lived here after I retired 31 years ago, and having lived in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains I know what hills and valleys are. In life one has ups and downs or hills and valleys. Seldom do you find yourself comfortable on a plateau. At my age and health I know that it could be just one more hill until I go home. I know it is just over the hill---I just know which hill. So I travel with my bags packed. i know where home is. I'm just not there yet. I wrote and published my epitaph some time ago. I am re- minded of Barney, just a laid-back long-eared hound who was filled with love for all God created. Faithful always. He didn't tell you each day "I love you." He told you every time he saw you, all day long just as Jesus does. I'm not comparing Jesus with a dog. I am showing you God in one of his lower creations. He is faithful and trustworthy. He is telling you He loves you even when you don't listen. You can see it in the new growth of grass or trees, for with- out these there would be no oxygen for you to breathe. You may not see it or even care. You may be too busy, but He is still telling you "I love you." –––––– In all my 82 years I have seen and heard a lot of controversy. Never would I have thought it would be the National Anthem. What possibly could the National Anthem cause to become an issue? One good thing is NFL problems and gay marriage have ab- solutely no effect on my life. I don't have to deal with either. For years I have seen how useless the NFL really is. There was a time I went to great lengths to see what would not hurt someone else just over that thin line with the law. I was offered a sheet of paper with all the NFL teams' schedules and the score spread of the winning team. I refused to buy it, but I remembered who was supposed to win of the first four games. Had I took their offer and invested in this sport I could have been rich. Everyone knows WWE is a great choreographed entertain- ment show. True, you can get hurt. They don't wear the out- landish costumes like football, but they do pick the most likely ones to make the crowds like or dislike them. Football has theirs, too, but they pay outlandish wages to use gimmicks, dolls, toys, games, videos, and TV rights to make the owners richer. Personally I would not go to an NFL game if they paid me. I prefer wrestling or Roller Derby.

COURTESY PHOTO Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center has donated $75,000 to South Florida State College to fund an additional nursing faculty position and to expand the pro- gram to meet a critical need for nurses in the region. With the demand for nurses expected to rise by 20 percent over the next 10 years, those who obtain nursing degrees from SFSC have a 100-percent job placement rate. Many students obtain jobs before graduation day. “We are extremely proud of the quality education de- livered by our nursing faculty,” said Dr. Thomas C. Leitzel, president of SFSC. Shown with the donation are (from left) Randy Surber, CEO and president of Florida Hospital Heartland; Cathy Jaco, chief nursing officer and vice president of Patient Care Services for Florida Hospital Heartland; Mary von Merveldt, SFSC director of nursing education; and Leitzel. 2 LOCATIONS YOUR BUSINESS COULD COURTESY PHOTO Members of the Hardee Swim Association pose for a picture at the 2018 Titusville Invitational held late last month.
