The Vidharbha region of Maharashtra is the originating place of Karvat Kati (saw-edged) saree so named after the border design which resembles saw teeth. The design resembling saw teeth is weaved on body part of the saree at both the sides adjacent to the border. Every karvath kati design saree will have this pattern of design on both the sides. The root origin of most of the designs is the sculptures seen at the famous Ramtek temple, which is near to this place. The major products produced in the cluster are Saree, Shirting, Ladies Dress Material, Dupatta for Gents and Ladies and also Stole. The Sarees are of length 6.5 mtrs and width 50’. The count of the yarn used as Warp is 35 D Korea Silk for all the products except Stole. For Stoles, the count of the yarn used in the Warp is 36 D Korea Silk. The count of the yarn used in the Weft of the Saree ranges from 50-70 D Silk of local variety. The reed of the Saree is 72” and picks varies from 66 to 72. The widths of Saree, Shirting, Ladies Dress Material are 50’. The warp yarn for shirting is 35 D Korea Silk whereas the commonly used weft yarn are “Cotton-1/100s, 1/80s”, “Pedenkal Yarn – 60 D”, “China Silk- Mulberry”, “Moga”, “Ghicha”, and “Tussar Silk”. The reed is 72 and picks are in the range 50-55. For stoles, Tussar Silk is used in the weft. The reed for stoles is 72 and picks are in the range 45-50. The width of the stoles are 24’, 30’ and 50’. E) Name of the Geographical Indication: KARVATH KATI SAREES & FABRICS F) Description of the Goods: The Karvath Kati Sarees & Fabrics is socio-culturally associated with the people of Maharashtra it is an auspicious wear for various religious occasions in Vidharbha region. G) Geographical area of Production and Map as shown in page no: Bhandara District:- The district of Bhandara in the North Eastern extreme of the Nagpur division of Maharashtra state lies between 29°39' and 21°38' North Latitudes and 79°27' and 80°42' East Longitudes. Geographically, the district lies entirely within the Wainganga basin. Three major tributaries of Wainganga –The Bagh, The Bawanthari and The Chulband, drain the district. The district has considerable geological variety in its rock formations, that mostly belong to the archaean and the dharwar formations. The district is traversed West to East in the middle by the Nagpur-Kolkata (South Eastern) Broad Gauge railway line and the Nagpur-Raipur national highway. The weavers of Karvath Kati Sari & Fabrics are scattered in two districts, namely Bhandara and Nagpur. Districts of Chandrapur & Gadchiroli are main centres of reeling activities, and weaving takes place at Bhandara & Nagpur districts. Mohadi village, Taluka – Mohadi is the main weaving cluster in Bhandara district.

SEPTEMBER 2012 MANAGEMENT SUMMARY This report presents the results of an intensive-level architectural survey of 30 historic mills in the City of Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. These 30 mills were recognized by Mayor Jeffery Jones, the Paterson Historic Preservation Commission’s staff and by industrial historians as representing a highly significant but largely underappreciated cultural resource directly associated with the expansion of Paterson when it was known worldwide as “The Silk City” during the half century dating from roughly 1875 to 1925. The “30 mills” survey was initiated by the City of Paterson with the expressed goal of identifying and surveying historic large-scale mills located in parts of the city outside of the Great Falls district. The project was funded by a Certified Local Government Grant-in-Aid from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Historic Preservation Office (NJHPO). This came in recognition by Mayor Jeffery Jones that these buildings should play an important role in future development plans and that they are an important cultural assets scattered throughout much of the city.

The different parameters such as raw silk (%), filament length (m), reelability (%), denier and shell ratio were determined at the maturity of cocoons. It was found that the parameters were better in cocoon irrigated with 33%PTSW compared to 50%PTSW and raw water irrigations. This concludes that the mulberry plants irrigated with 33%PTSW were enriched with more nutrients for the potential growth of mulberry plants which results in the potential cocoons. Introduction 1.1 India Handloom Brand (IHB) has been launched by the Govt. of India to endorse the quality of the handloom products in terms of raw material, processing, embellishments, weaving, design and other parameters besides social and environmental compliances. The IHB is given only to high quality defect free product to cater to the needs of those customers who are looking for niche handmade products. 1.2 The list of products eligible for registration under the IHB is enclosed at Annexure – 1(A). However, as per recommendation of IHB Review Committee, new items can be included/ existing specifications can be changed/ new specifications may be added in the list from time to time. 1.3 For registration under IHB, the applicant has to submit on-line application in the website www.indiahandloombrand.gov.in.     Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 DATS in partnership with the V&A 1 Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 This information pack has been produced to accompany two one-day workshops taught by Katy Wigley (Director, School of Textiles) and Mary Schoeser (Hon. V&A Senior Research Fellow), held at the V&A Clothworkers’ Centre on 19 April and 17 May 2018. The workshops are produced in collaboration between DATS and the V&A. The purpose of the workshops is to enable participants to improve the documentation and interpretation of collections and make them accessible to the widest audience. Participants will have the chance to study objects at first hand to help increase their confidence in identifying woven textile materials and techniques. The word "Sari" is derived from the Sanskrit and the Prakrit (pre-Sanskrit language) root, "Sati", which means, "strip of fabric". Interestingly, the Buddhist Jain works, the Jatakas, describe women’s apparel, called the "Sattika", which could well have been similar to the present-day saree. Another fact is that the end of the saree that hangs downward from the shoulder is called the Pallav. Experts believe that the name came to be during the reign of the Pallavas, the ruling dynasty of ancient Tamilnadu. A saree typically ranges from six to nine yards in length and can be worn in several ways, depending upon the native of the wearer and her outlook on current fashion. Usually, a saree is tucked in at the waist and is then wrapped around the body with pleats in the center, the other end draped loosely over the left shoulder, showing the midriff. This apparel is also popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia. This very feminine garment is worn over a petticoat, also referred to as a lehenga in the North, a paavaadai in the South, a parkar or ghaghra in the West and a shaya in the East. It is worn along with a bodice or blouse, called the choli (in North India) or ravikkai (in South India).

In Odisha hand-woven fabrics have existed since beyond the reach of memory. This sector involves large number of artisans from rural and semi-urban areas, most of which are women and people from economically disadvantaged groups. Some of the strengths of this industry are availability of cheap and abundant labour, use of local resources, low capital investment, unique craftsmanship in manufacturing of the products and increasing appreciation by international consumers. It is important to note that despite such unique characteristics, the industry comprises a meager proportion of Indian exports in global market, thus calling for efforts to promote and channelize the offerings of the industry to tap its hidden potential. Therefore the present study has been undertaken with an aim to discuss the history of handloom in context to Odisha, its cultural importance, and contribution of handloom to the economic development of the weaving community of Odisha.
