  • Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions
Digitising Boardgames: Issues and Tensions Melissa J. Rogerson, Martin Gibbs, Wally Smith Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural User Interfaces The University of Melbourne Parkville, Vic, 3010 +61 3 8344 1394, +61 3 8344 1494 [email protected] , [email protected] , [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, we discuss the different ways in which modern European boardgames (“Eurogames”) are converted for digital play. We review digitised versions of three popular tabletop boardgames: Puerto Rico, Agricola and Ascension. Using these examples, we demonstrate the tension between the interaction metaphor of the original analogue medium and the metaphor of a digital game. We describe the importance of housekeeping chores to gameplay and position them as a form of articulation work, which is typically hidden by digital implementations. Further, we demonstrate the types of information that are created through digital play and discuss how this influences game play of both digital and physical boardgames. Keywords Board games, interaction metaphor, articulation, theorycrafting, informating INTRODUCTION Boardgames, traditionally played in their physical format using boards, cards, dice, playing tokens and the like, are increasingly being translated to digital form for devices such as smartphones, computers, videogame systems and tablets. To date, little attention has been paid to how and the degree to which this digitisation affects or transforms the experience of play. There is growing tension between the desire for digitised boardgames to be true to the interaction metaphor (Sharp et al. 2007, 58-63) of the original medium and the desire to extend the game to explore the potential of the digital medium.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Nos(Otros), Los Textual Poch@s: Understanding Notions of Chicanx/Latinx Identities through the Digital Art of Rio Yañez A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Chicana and Chicano Studies by María Daniela Z. Jiménez 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Nos(Otros), Los Textual Poch@s: Understanding Notions of Chicanx/Latinx Identities through the Digital Art of Rio Yañez by María Daniela Z. Jiménez Master of Arts in Chicana and Chicano Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor María C. Pons, Co-Chair Professor Charlene Villaseñor Black, Co-Chair This thesis presents the concept of textual poch@ through Bay Area-based artist, Rio Yañez’s artwork. The textual poch@ is an individual who experiences marginalization and/or has to justify themselves for deviating from their society’s dominant narratives and cultural tastes. Their deviation results in their own interpretation and reconfiguration of their culture (usually associated with aspects of their identity, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, physical abilities) through a rasquache framework – in terms of making do with what they have to create something new. Through visual and textual analyses, I focus on two of Yañez’s digital art collections, Morrissey-inspired artwork and Japanese-influence portraiture series, as my case studies. In doing so, I demonstrate how these two collections push against essentialism and unfix Chicanx/Latinx identity as it is tied to dominant Chicanx/Latinx cultural practices and tastes. ii The thesis of María Daniela Z. Jiménez is approved. Genevieve G.

  • CASINO from NOWHERE, to VAGUELY EVERYWHERE Franco Pratesi - 09.10.1994
CASINO FROM NOWHERE, TO VAGUELY EVERYWHERE Franco Pratesi - 09.10.1994 “Fishing games form a rich hunting ground for researchers in quest of challenge”, David Parlett writes in one of his fine books. (1) I am not certain that I am a card researcher, and I doubt the rich hunting-ground too. It is several years since I began collecting information on these games, without noticeable improvements in my knowledge of their historical development. Therefore I would be glad if some IPCS member could provide specific information. Particularly useful would be descriptions of regional variants of fishing games which have − or have had − a traditional character. Within the general challenge mentioned, I have encountered an unexpected specific challenge: the origin of Casino, always said to be of Italian origin, whereas I have not yet been able to trace it here. So it appears to me, that until now, it is a game widespread from nowhere in Italy. THE NAME As we know, even the correct spelling of the name is in dispute. The reason for writing Cassino is said to be a printing mistake in one of the early descriptions. The most probable origin is from the same Italian word casino, which entered the English vocabulary to mean “a pleasure-house”, “a public room used for social meetings” and finally “a public gambling-house”. So the name of the game would better be written Casino, as it was spelled in the earliest English descriptions (and also in German) towards the end of the 18th century. If the origin has to be considered − and assuming that information about further uses of Italian Casino is not needed − it may be noted that Italian Cassino does exist too: it is a word seldom used and its main meaning of ‘box-cart’ hardly has any relevance to our topic.
