Next issue July 2017 Deadline June 10th Village News June 2017 Childswickham Open Gardens – Sunday 18th June (Fathers’ Day)

There is so much colour already spreading through the gardens of Childswickham. Will you open yours on Sunday 18th June?

If you would like to take part, either by opening your garden, baking a cake (please!?), helping us to serve teas, or all of the above, please contact [email protected] or 07817 561815.

We currently DO NOT HAVE ANY gardens, and without gardens there can be no Open Gardens! We would love to run it but we need YOU!

Last year many of our hosts left their gates open and explored the village themselves, is this something you can do? Funds raised for Friends of St Mary to go towards replacing the leaky Church Oil Tank.

These may be funny, embarrassing, and…oh, just read them yourself. Enjoy, and share SMILE them with someone who needs a laugh! Q. Where was Hadrian’s Wall built? A. Around Hadrian’s garden. Q. Why would living close to a mobile phone mast cause ill health? A. You might walk into it. Q. What is a fibula? A. A little lie. Q. What is the meaning of the word varicose? A. Close by. Q. The race of people known as Malays come from which country? A. Malaria. Q. Name six animals which live specifically in the Artic. A. Two polar bears. Four seals. Q. What did Mahatma Gandhi and Genghis Khan have in common? A. Unusual names.

A couple who worked at the circus wanted to adopt a child. Social workers had doubts about their suitability, but the couple produced photos of their large motor-home, which was equipped with a beautiful nursery. As for education, not only was there a nanny, but also a full-time tutor to teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin and computer skills. Finally, the social workers were satisfied, and had only one last question. "What age child are you hoping to adopt?" "Oh, we don’t mind at all,” the couple assured them. “As long as he fits in the cannon."

Wickhamford Gardening Club

Our June meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 28th June is a garden visit to Nafford House. Eckington, meeting at the venue at 7.00pm. Contact committee members if assistance with transport required.

The Leedons Day Trippers Group We are, as our name suggests, a group of residents from Leedons Park - all National Trust members - who have organised trips to a variety of Trust properties mainly within two hours travel of Broadway. Many of our visits do get booked early but there are a few non-residents who enjoy the benefits of the trips with us.

Our coach trips depart from Leedons Car Park around 8.30am and usually back by 5pm.

Obviously it does help to be a member of the National Trust as entrance to all properties is free and our prices normally reflect the coach costs but anyone who is not a NT member and would like to travel on a trip there would be an additional entrance fee to consider. For further details please contact Dave Bruton 01386 853148.

Held at Childswickham Memorial Hall on Wednesday, 3rd May 2017

At the beginning of the evening the members heard the arguments for and against the 2 resolutions that the NFWI have put forward. After a short discussion the votes were taken, and overall there was no support for the resolutions.

The Speaker, Meg Farmer, gave an entertaining talk about her 20 years as a foster carer. She and her husband had cared for 98 children ranging in age from babies of 3 hours to teenagers with their own babies. She spoke of the successes achieved with children, entertaining the members with some amusing anedotes. But there were also problems with unsocial behaviour and bad language. Foster carers may experience difficulties with parents and sometimes the authorities. Foster carers have no rights in law so after their experiences with the death of a child in their care Meg set up a national helpline for bereaved foster carers. She finished saying a recent tribute on Facebook from a young Mum commenting on the love she realised she had received in their care made all the hard work worthwhile.

Chairman Innes Cole gave the vote of thanks. The evening ended with refreshments, the raffle and competitions.

The next meeting is on Wednesday,7th June at 7.30pm.

TO ALL CHILDREN'S SOCIETY BOX HOLDERS

Many thanks to all of you who contributed to the sum of £201.60 which has been forwarded to the Society. This is £56.00 more than last year, mostly as a result of new box holders recruited since then.

A recent communication from the Society states: "It is only thanks to amazing supporters like you that we are able to continue our vital work. Every day we're changing the lives of this country's most vulnerable children for the better".

If anyone else would like a collection box for all that small change that weighs down purses and pockets, please let me know (telephone 833622).

FAMILY HISTORY REQUEST

My name is Malcolm Butler and I am trying to trace my family tree. From details I have found my ancestors came from Chidswycham, which I believe is how it was spelt in those days. The family tree I am searching for is on my mothers side they are the Smiths and I have found that a George Smith was born there in 1824, his parents were William Smith and Elizabeth Smith nee Martin they married in 1787 on the 12th of November, I believe that Williams parents were Stephen and Sarah but have not confirmed that yet. My request is for any information anyone may have can they please E-mail me at [email protected]

Broadway Station Progress June 2017 Just a quick update this month. The big news is that the 'Last Mile' share issue closed at the end of April, and has raised a total of £1,330,000. The station building brickwork is now nearing completion, with the final few courses being laid and the work on the steel roof trusses is progressing well. Our storage containers and cabins have now been moved from platform 1. Meanwhile the new track is moving northwards, and in mid May was approaching the bridge at Pry Lane. The work by contractors to stabilise the embankment between Road and Childswickham Road is under way, and is exptected to last until the end of July.

For those of you with internet access who want to keep abreast of progress on a regular basis, a blog detailing our work at the station can be found at: http://broadwaystationgroup.blogspot.co.uk and a blog giving details of the tracklaying can be found at: http:// broadwayextensionblog.blogspot.co.uk Next issue July 2017 Deadline June 10th Village News June 2017 Nomads Community Bus For local people, by local people

St Peter’s Church is a Grade 11* listed building with various interesting features.

Some of the church dates back to the 11C or earlier. Most of the building is from the 14C and 15C and was restored in 1860s. We even know who was the Rector in 1289! The Chancel (by J D Sedding) was added in 1895. It cost £600 to build. Look up at the gargoyles, weathered now over the centuries. See the old doorways, one of which is now blocked up. These show some very early Norman work.

Inside the Church you can still see the slots where the beams for the Rood Screen would have rested and an ancient14C piscina by the pulpit. Nearby is a little stair and door way which would have led to the Rood Loft.

The Font is 15C and placed in the Church around 1425. Some while ago it was found in a local garden and returned to its proper home. Behind the organ is a cupboard where books and vessels would have originally been kept. This is an Aumbry. There are many memorial stones of which the most fascinating is an alabaster stone set in the wall next to the altar. It is a memorial for Abbot Halford of Bordesley Abbey near Redditch, who died 3rd September 1445. Do you know why he is buried here?

There are eight fine bells and a ringing chamber situated above the vestry.

The Church is generally kept locked but if you would like to see inside the contact numbers for keyholders can be found in the porch.

The trail runs until September, so there will be plenty of time to discover all the hares. There 2 in Broadway, 2 in Moreton in Marsh and 9 in Cheltenham to spot. Have you spotted any yet?
