Funds raised for Friends of St Mary to go towards replacing the leaky Church Oil Tank. These may be funny, embarrassing, and…oh, just read them yourself. A couple who worked at the circus wanted to adopt a child. Social workers had doubts about their suitability, but the couple produced photos of their large motor-home, which was equipped with a beautiful nursery. As for education, not only was there a nanny, but also a full-time tutor to teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin and computer skills. Finally, the social workers were satisfied, and had only one last question. "What age child are you hoping to adopt?" "Oh, we don’t mind at all,” the couple assured them. “As long as he fits in the cannon." Wickhamford Gardening Club Our June meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 28th June is a garden visit to Nafford House. Eckington, meeting at the venue at 7.00pm. Contact committee members if assistance with transport required. The Leedons Day Trippers Group We are, as our name suggests, a group of residents from Leedons Park - all National Trust members - who have organised trips to a variety of Trust properties mainly within two hours travel of Broadway. Many of our visits do get booked early but there are a few non-residents who enjoy the benefits of the trips with us. Our coach trips depart from Leedons Car Park around 8.30am and usually back by 5pm. Obviously it does help to be a member of the National Trust as entrance to all properties is free and our prices normally reflect the coach costs but anyone who is not a NT member and would like to travel on a trip there would be an additional entrance fee to consider. After a short discussion the votes were taken, and overall there was no support for the resolutions. The Speaker, Meg Farmer, gave an entertaining talk about her 20 years as a foster carer. She and her husband had cared for 98 children ranging in age from babies of 3 hours to teenagers with their own babies. She spoke of the successes achieved with children, entertaining the members with some amusing anedotes. But there were also problems with unsocial behaviour and bad language. Foster carers may experience difficulties with parents and sometimes the authorities. Foster carers have no rights in law so after their experiences with the death of a child in their care Meg set up a national helpline for bereaved foster carers. She finished saying a recent tribute on Facebook from a young Mum commenting on the love she realised she had received in their care made all the hard work worthwhile. Chairman Innes Cole gave the vote of thanks. The evening ended with refreshments, the raffle and competitions. The next meeting is on Wednesday,7th June at 7.30pm. TO ALL CHILDREN'S SOCIETY BOX HOLDERS Many thanks to all of you who contributed to the sum of £201.60 which has been forwarded to the Society. This is £56.00 more than last year, mostly as a result of new box holders recruited since then. A recent communication from the Society states: "It is only thanks to amazing supporters like you that we are able to continue our vital work. Every day we're changing the lives of this country's most vulnerable children for the better". If anyone else would like a collection box for all that small change that weighs down purses and pockets, please let me know (telephone 833622). Our name can be misleading. We are not remotely like university students. We do not sit exams. It is all about friendship, keeping active in body and mind, and enjoying our leisure hours in ways that our parents would have envied.
