HARVEST FESTIVAL. CHILDSWICKHAM.

Summer’s here and the time is right,

For dancing in the street…..Whenever I hear that song – whether it is the

original by Martha and the Vandellas or the version done at Live Aid by David Bowie and Mick Jagger, it does raise the spirit. It’s quite amazing how the light levels in the summer months make you feel so much better. Christians often picture the Holy Spirit as fire or air and, in the Bible accounts, he’s often ac- companied by bright light. At the beginning of creation, the first thing God did was say, ‘Let There Be Light’. By following the teachings of Jesus we feel enlightened when he helps us lead happier, fuller, lighter lives. If you ever feel that you are in the dark for any reason – invite the Spirit of God into your dark- est places.

As we collected clothes for the ‘Keep A Child Warm’ campaign last month (many thanks to all who contributed) we were also reminded of others, near and far, leading less comfortable lives than us. Look out on this beautiful place in which we live and just say, ‘Thank you’ for the wonder of God’s creation. From sunrise to sunset, he is there for you - in the dark and the light.

Here’s to a great summer,

Julie Fay

------Willersey Toddington and trains

http://willersey.org will tell you all you need to know about Willersey. It is one of the best web sites and keeps itself up to date.

Willersey had a halt station on the Great Western Railway which was opened in 1st August 1904.

It was situated about half a mile from the village centre which was closer to its community than many stations on the route. It had two 152-foot wooden platforms, each with a corrugated iron pagoda style shelter. No sidings or facilities were provided. The initial service consisted of 9 Down and 8 Up services a day. The line was closed by British Railways on 7th March 1960. Since then a team of enthusiasts have reopened the line as a heritage steam service, connecting to Cheltenham. It is currently being extended to Broadway and they have future plans to eventually reconnect to which could in time give Will-

Gloucestershire Warwick Railway http://www.gwsr.com

In July we step up another gear for 3-day mid-week running from Tuesday 21st July, giving you the chance to ride behind all three forms of traction: steam, mainline diesel and diesel railcar. The highlight of the month is the Heritage Diesel Weekend running for 3 days from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th

Toddington also has a Narrow Gauge Railway (NGR) , a two foot (600mm) narrow gauge, entirely volunteer operated railway which

runs from the west side of the Toddington Station Main Car Park (behind the 'Flag and Whistle' Cafe), where the Booking Office is sit- uated, through the station of California Crossing and on to Didbrook Loop, about three quarters of a mile in length. The line runs parallel to the standard gauge line and the yard, through shallow cuttings to Didbook, where the run-round loop is situated. Trains continue to Didbrook Loop where the locomotive runs round the train to haul it back to Toddington Narrow Gauge Station. The whole trip takes about 25 minutes. Trains normally run every thirty-five minutes, the first at 11.45, the last at 15.50.

May was a busy month for the WI with members attending the Group meeting,a visit by the Cinema group to see ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ and 9 members had an enjoyable day at the Jinney Ring Centre making enamel and bead jewellery.

At the June meeting Mr Richard Kendrick talked about ‘behind the Scenes with a Film Caterer’. From a converted Hot Dog van to enormous vehicles used on location, Mr Kendrick talked about the logis- tics of catering for shows and venues from Crossroads, broadcasting teams involved in Wembley, The Commonwealth Games, Grand Prix, The Grand National, golf tournaments and many other great sporting occasions, even taking food out to the tall ships involved in the filming of Howard’s Way. The list was endless! It made us realise how much money is spent on producing a programme.

Marilyn was lucky enough to be the member picked to go to the Queen’s Garden Party for the WI 100 year celebration and had a lovely afternoon at the Palace. 2 members also attended the centenary AGM

Childswickham Fun Golf Day

At last a golf day with glorious weather from start to finish. Despite many of our regular supporters being unavailable due to a clash of dates we managed to have 44 players and 10 guests. We have raised £525 towards the church boiler fund. I sincerely thank one and all for their support of this event and the cause, especially Ann Prater Art Media for sponsoring the event with winners medals. Also the team that organised the registration of players and guests, the raffle team and to all those that donated the raffle prizes which raised £181 towards the to- tal of £525. Hope to see you all at the 2016 Fun Golf Day .

AND a great Childswickham gardens Sunday afternoon. So good to meet each other in a wonderfully organised tramp around the village. Next outing is the Fete … (see page 7 )see you all again there! Ps same again next year!!!

Childswickham and St Mary’s

Childswickham is a village in south , a couple of miles west of Broadway. The name Childswickham is believed to have derived from 'Child', the young son of a nobleman, 'wick', a clearing in the wood and 'ham', short for hamlet. Ecclesiastically renamed Childswyckham in 1973 Its history can be traced back to Roman times as coins and pottery of this era were found in fields on the old Roman road from Worcester to London which came through the village. Childs Wickham (or Childswickham) in 1923 included the hamlet of Murcott; and in 1931, the whole parish was transferred from Gloucestershire to Worcestershire, though it remains in Gloucester Diocese. In the centre of the village is the base and shaft of an ancient stone market cross, now sur- mounted by an urn. St Mary's Church SP0750938401. is a Grade II Listed Building, and it will be found the Brit- ish Listed Buildings website listed with Worcestershire. Points of interest they mention are a restored doorway of c.1130-40 between the nave and tower, and the bellcote at the east end of the roof of the nave - for the sanctus bell, perhaps? Unfortunately, their account makes no mention of a south transept, so perhaps this was a casualty of the restoration. Kelly's Directory of 1923 describes St Mary's as "a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles and a spire, containing 6 bells". There was formerly a south transept. The old nave and transept are supposed to have been built in the 12th century, and the tower and spire in the 14th century. It was rebuilt in 1870 under the direction of Mr. Hunt, architect of , and a new chancel was erected by the late W. Atkinson esq. in 1874, under the direction of the same architect. Apparently in the graveyard there is (or was, in 1923) a gravestone recording the death of a woman aged 133 An associated chapel was known as Ebenezer Chapel (Demolished), Childs Wickham in Chapel Lane .

11 to 12 July 2015 - Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

Venue - On the fields behind the Tewkesbury Borough Council offices, Gloucester Road (part of the site of the original battle of Tewkesbury in 1471). Already hailed as Europe's biggest and most spectacular medieval event, Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is planning to make this anniversary bigger and better than ever. The Battle of Tewkesbury in the War of the Roses 1471. There will be the usual battle featuring around 2000 knights, archers and men at arms, a colourful and authentic living history camp with families living in complete medieval style for the whole weekend, and a fascinating market selling everything from medieval pots and authentic costumes to toys and in- dividual jewellery. But this year plans are also in hand for a joust with knights on horseback meeting in combat, a huge street procession, entertainment both on the fair site and throughout the town and much, much more. The festival will take place on fields behind the Tewkesbury Borough Council offices in Gloucester Road, part of the site of the original battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. Ample parking is available, for a small charge. The site will be well marked from the town centre and from junction 9 of the M5.

CAUTION if you have a pet read on!

I want to give a warning to pet owners in the Broadway and Childswickham areas to be extra vigilant over what their dogs (and cats if possible) may pick up and ingest. I have just lost my cat, Ra, to antifreeze poisoning. He absorbed so much that the Broadway vets were able to positively identify the poison from blood analysis. I cannot find the source, no leaking car ra- diators in the area. It could have been from bait soaked in antifreeze to control foxes who then carry the poisoned bait away and it is then attrac- tive to pet cats and dogs. I hate to think of the third option - deliberate poisoning. I would like to say thank you to the Broadway vets for their care of Ra and their help afterwards. Patricia Beadle

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol8/pp262-268#anchorn208

The above link gives a fascinating history or Hinton. A flavour is produced below .

Hinton on the Green lies in the vale 2 miles south of Evesham. It was transferred from Gloucester- shire to Worcestershire in 1931. The brook called the River Isbourne runs north through the centre of the parish to join the Avon. The amount of woodland is small but was formerly more extensive: 900 elms and oaks were planted in the 15th century, and in the early 19th century there was a wood in the southeast of the parish. Hinton, described as barren and poverty-stricken when it was granted to Gloucester Abbey in 981, was nevertheless supporting a fairly large population in 1086 with 49 inhabitants rising during the earlier 20th century to 268 in 1961. Tradition records a public house at the cottages called the Harrow near the entrance of the lane to Downrip Farm, but if there was one it had closed down by 1891.

In 1836 Hinton became part of the Evesham Union; (fn. 135) it was transferred to the Rural District in 1894, and back to the Evesham Rural District on becoming part of Worcestershire in 1931. (fn. 136) A parish council was formed in 1966. (fn. 137)

The church of ST. PETER comprises nave, chancel, west tower, and south porch. The north and south doorways, which probably date from the late 11th century, are the earliest substantial part of the fabric; each has a bold roll-moulding on the angle of the arch and single shafts with scalloped capitals. The tympanum of the blocked north doorway is roughly scored with intersecting diagonal lines. A stone fragment with Norman decoration is set internally in the north wall of the chancel. The consecration of the high altar at Hinton in 1315 suggests a rebuilding of the church at that time, and the chancel arch and two nave windows may date from the 14th century. Extensive re- building in the 15th or early 16th century included the 3-stage embattled and pinnacled tower. All three nave walls are embattled, and both tower and nave have gargoyles. Square-headed Perpendic- ular windows were inserted on each side of the nave near the east end. The church had 4 bells, re-cast as 5 in 1705 at the expense of David Warren; in 1931 three lighter bells were added. The village has given its name to a method of change-ringing known as Hinton Surprise Major Next issue Aug-Sept 2015 Deadline July 10th Village News July 2015
