Since the turn of the decade she has been producing electronic and neo classical music, combining her skills as a sound designer, classically trained composer, and prolific singer-singer writer, she has released 6 critically acclaimed albums to date and works independently running her own business Emika Records. Since her early album releases on Ninjatune she has set out to define her own sound, one with huge depths, deep sub bass, haunting melodies, her own sultry breathy vocals, often playing classical piano and cutting this up into pieces juxtaposed with the beats. Exploring ways of re inventing the song-form with her club influences and techy-production style. It’s this mix of old and new, electronic and classical, that makes things sound.. Emika. Born in Milton Keynes, England, from a British father and Czech mother, she started making music using a 4-track cassette recorder as a young teen, combining classical piano, electronics through sampling techniques, getting her first job at her friends’ local recording studio. She later went on to study Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University to learn the art of record production, while living in Bristol and discovering the cities trip hop and early bass music scene which would later evolve to become the now world-famous dubstep movement. As a postgraduate student she moved overseas to Berlin to work as a Sound Designer at one of the leading global music tech companies, Native Instruments; developing products for producers and DJ’s alike. She collaborated with internationally known Techno club, Berghain; to record an archive of field-recordings inside the club which were then used for their 5 year anniversary release, ‘Fünf’ (2010). Music She signed her first two albums ‘Emika’ (2011) and ‘Dva’ (2013) to UK indie label Ninjatune which both received critical acclaim in the music media and personal support from Mary-Anne Hobbs and Thom Yorke who stated on his BBC 6 Music radio show in 2012, ‘I hope she (Emika) becomes very famous’. Her bass-heavy, edgy songs with her mix of piano and sultry breathy voice, had now become her synonymous trademark. In 2015 Emika established her own imprint Emika Records and continues to develop her work in electronic and classical music, embracing the creative freedom which came with such a venture and using this to push new classical music forwards and experiment with the blueprint of being a Berlin DJ. Some of her solo piano works from her album ‘Klavirni’ (2015) have been streamed more than 15 million times on Spotify. She developed a strong connection to her fans via her social media platforms and live performances and through their support, her first full symphony ‘Melanfonie’ (2017) was crowdfunded via Kickstarter where she received €25,000 from fans in a 3 month period. She was able to hire the city of Prague’s 50-piece Philharmonic Orchestra and explore her Eastern European roots as inspiration for the piece. Live “Emika’s effortless performances… sound just as good, if not even better, on stage than they do on record.” - DJ Mag As a performer, Emika takes to the stage with her piano, synths, voice and custom-made tech set up. Combining her skills as a sound designer, classically trained composer, and prolific singer-songwriter, she presents music from her latest album ‘Falling In Love With Sadness’ (2018) and loves to improvise live, reinventing previous material from her 6 previous albums. She recently sold-out the Berlin-Zeiss Planetarium (2019) with her unique live show featuring 360° dome visuals and surround sound. The show received great reviews from DJ Mag, Uncut, and BE-AT.TV. She has toured across the USA, China, Russia, Mexico, and Europe several times, performing at major music festivals such as Mutek (2013) Glastonbury (2016), Atlas Weekend (2019), and she was invited twice to perform at David Lynch’s club Silencio (a homage to his film ‘Mulholland Drive’) in Paris. “She’s all ready worlds apart, worth praising to the skies.” - Classic Pop Mag “A glamorous Zola Jesus.” - Uncut Mag Collaborations Emika has been remixed by Marcel Dettmann, Brand Brauer Frick, Pinch, Rebekah, and has made remixes herself for Radiohead, Len Faki, Amon Tobin and Fink. Film & TV Her music has been featured in films such as Spielmacher (Warner Bros – Germany, 2018), Bad Banks (ZDF, 2018) and the film trailer for Mission Impossible 4 as well as USA hit TV series The Blacklist (NBC, 2013) and How To Get Away With Murder (ABC, 2016) including a feature on the popular game Wipeout from Playstation. • An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno
Menu Search Red Bull Music Academy Daily An Oral History of Berlin Minimal Techno A look back at the stripped-down subgenre that defined the German capital from 1998-2008 September 7, 2018 By Joshua Glazer In 1998, the rave scene that gripped Germany after reunification was at its apex. What had started in the literal underground spaces of post-GDR Berlin after the fall of the Wall had gone mainstream, with millions of young people celebrating the colorful culture of electronic dance music all across the country. But the techno utopia envisioned by many as the new millenium approached was already starting to come undone. The trend was swiftly co-opted – ironically, by some of the same capitalist forces that had defeated the communist system a decade earlier. The bubble soon burst, and many of those truly dedicated to the music were forced to rebuild. The result was something that was the opposite of rave’s over-the- top excess, a movement that idealized a minimalist aesthetic in sound, visuals and fashion. It was a lifestyle that resisted the unbridled exuberance of rave in favor of something more sustainable – and sustain it did, with tracks that filled whole sides of vinyl and parties that went on for days at a time. Berlin became the center for this new creative community, drawing in techno practitioners and aficionados from around the world who came for the party and stayed for the ease of living made possible by cheap rents and easy access to artist visas. “Minimal” became the buzzword around this scene, and while overindulgences were aplenty in freewheeling afterhours, the “arm, aber sexy” (poor but sexy) slogan coined by then-mayor Klaus Wowereit could not have been a more accurate appraisal of Berlin’s appeal.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Politics of Electronic Music Purism: Social Space and Label Authenticity in the Netherlands
Politics of electronic music purism: Social space and label authenticity in the Netherlands Master Thesis Student Name: Marko Polovina Student Number: 465938 Supervisor: Erik Hitters Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam June, 2018 i Abstract Since electronic music’s emergence in the mid-1980s, the genre has gained considerable recognition as an unusual and an interesting case study for cultural production dynamics and socio-cultural values in regards to what is considered authentic. The scene in the Netherlands has seen large-scale consumption of more mainstream/accessible off-shoots of electronic music genres such as trance, techno, and house for over two decades. The most significant case studies on electronic music are presented by Thornton (1995) and Hesmondhalgh (1998), generally taking a more broad approach in understanding these definitions within the electronic music dance industry; both share key ideas of technology innovation and convergence of these practices within identity. This thesis attempts to look at the label perspective of the Dutch scene because of its independent and historical connotations associated with the music genre, similarly done by Grote (2014) and Strachan (2007) in other locations and genres in the label perspective. The fact that these labels are independent, but aesthetically appear small-scale, despite at times being the large-scale producer of certain genres, creates a dissonance in the way that cultural capital can be clearly created in this world. Bourdieu’s (1993/1996) cultural capital, specifically the social space aspect, along with Bruno Latour’s (1996) actor network theory is used to understand how music labels in the Dutch electronic music industry in Amsterdam and Rotterdam construct their identities in this network of influences and social space, what they distinctly value as authentic, and ultimately how they perceive authenticity in the current electronic music scene.

  • Rock Harmony Reconsidered: Tonal, Modal and Contrapuntal Voice&
DOI: 10.1111/musa.12085 BRAD OSBORN ROCK HARMONY RECONSIDERED:TONAL,MODAL AND CONTRAPUNTAL VOICE-LEADING SYSTEMS IN RADIOHEAD A great deal of the harmony and voice leading in the British rock group Radiohead’s recorded output between 1997 and 2011 can be heard as elaborating either traditional tonal structures or establishing pitch centricity through purely contrapuntal means.1 A theory that highlights these tonal and contrapuntal elements departs from a number of developed approaches in rock scholarship: first, theories that focus on fretboard-ergonomic melodic gestures such as axe- fall and box patterns;2 second, a proclivity towards analysing chord roots rather than melody and voice leading;3 and third, a methodology that at least tacitly conflates the ideas of hypermetric emphasis and pitch centre. Despite being initially yoked to the musical conventions of punk and grunge (and their attendant guitar-centric compositional practice), Radiohead’s 1997– 2011 corpus features few of the characteristic fretboard gestures associated with rock harmony (partly because so much of this music is composed at the keyboard) and thus demands reconsideration on its own terms. This mature period represents the fullest expression of Radiohead’s unique harmonic, formal, timbral and rhythmic idiolect,4 as well as its evolved instrumentation, centring on keyboard and electronics. The point here is not to isolate Radiohead’s harmonic practice as something fundamentally different from all rock which came before it. Rather, by depending less on rock-paradigmatic gestures such as pentatonic box patterns on the fretboard, their music invites us to consider how such practices align with existing theories of rock harmony while diverging from others.

RADIOHEAD: THE GUITAR WEILDING, DANCING, SINGING COMMODITY by SELENA LAWSON Under the Direction of Jeffery Bennett ABSTRACT In 2007, Radiohead released a downloadable album, In Rainbows, allowing consumers to pay what they thought the album was worth. The band responded to a moment of change in the music industry. Since then, other bands, like Nine Inch Nails and Coldplay, have made similar moves. Radiohead's capability to release an album and let the fans decide its worth relied on the image they built, which foregrounded their commodification. The historic move redefined the boundaries between art and commodity, a well know tension in popular music studies. The thesis focuses on popular music as communication in the changing industry. Using Radiohead’s album as a case study, it looks at the changing boundaries in the tension between art and commodity. The thesis examines Radiohead's performance, its mediation by the press, and what the album’s distribution method meant to the fans.

!1 THE PLEASURE OF THE INTERTEXT: TOWARDS A COGNITIVE POETICS OF ADAPTATION A dissertation presented by Meg Tarquinio to The Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of English Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts April, 2017 !2 THE PLEASURE OF THE INTERTEXT: TOWARDS A COGNITIVE POETICS OF ADAPTATION by Meg Tarquinio ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Literature in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University April, 2017 !3 ABSTRACT The field of adaptation studies has been diagnosed as lacking consensus around its main tenets, especially those that would build a strong ontological foundation. This study participates in the burgeoning critical approach that places cognitive science in conversation with literary theory, looking towards the start of a cognitive turn in adaptation studies. Specifically, I offer the axiom that adaptations are analogies. In other words, I advance the original argument that adaptations are the textual expression of the cognitive function of analogy. Here, I’m using a cognitive theory of analogy as the partial mapping of knowledge (objects and relations) from a source domain to a target domain. From this vantage point, I reassess the theoretical tensions and analytical practices of adaptation studies. For instance, the idea of essence is an anathema within academic studies of adaptation, yet it continues to hold sway within popular discourse. My approach allows for a productive return to essence, not as some mystical quality inherent in an original text and then indescribably transmitted to its adaptation, but as the expression of a key sub-process of analogical reasoning – what Douglas Hofstadter refers to, conveniently, as “essence” or “gist extraction.” This line of argument demonstrates the degree to which André Bazin’s 1948 theorization of adaptation is in line with this cognitive version of essence.
